Book excerpt: In a world where more people know who Princess Di was than who their own senators are, where Graceland draws more visitors per year than the White House, and where Michael Jordan is an industry unto himself, fame and celebrity are central currencies. In this intriguing book, Tyler Cowen explores and elucidates the economics of fame. Fame motivates the talented and draws like-minded fans together. But it also may put profitability ahead of quality, visibility above subtlety, and privacy out of reach. The separation of fame and merit is one of the central dilemmas Cowen considers in his account of the modern market economy. He shows how fame is produced, outlines the principles that govern who becomes famous and why, and discusses whether fame-seeking behavior harmonizes individual and social interests or corrupts social discourse and degrades culture. Most pertinently, Cowen considers the implications of modern fame for creativity, privacy, and morality. Where critics from Plato to Allan Bloom have decried the quest for fame, Cowen takes a more pragmatic, optimistic view. He identifies the benefits of a fame-intensive society and makes a persuasive case that however bad fame may turn out to be for the famous, it is generally good for society and culture.

It ran as follows: - "MY DEAR ED., "I sail for England on the 27th. But before I leave I want to have another look at the Shawenegan Falls. Their roar has been in my ears ever since I left there. That tremendous hillside of foam is before my eyes night and day. The sketches I took are not at all satisfactory, so this time I will bring my camera with me, and try to get some snapshots at the falls.

Book excerpt: Betty Weaver Fridley always wanted to be a school teacher, she played school instead of house as a child. Her mother encouraged her toward that end. When the local school, was replacing some of its old desks, Dimmis, her mother, hauled three of the old desks home in her child's little wagon. They lived in the country, only a quarter of a mile from Jackson Township Schools. Betty then had her own schoolroom in the old "smoke house" on the farm. In 1945 Betty graduated from Bowling Green State University, where she had been elected treasurer of the Senior Class, and was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority, where she was also treasurer her senior year. She started her Business Education teaching career in the little town of Anna, Ohio, "Earthquake center of Ohio." I'm not kidding. Anna had two devastating earthquakes in 1936, which condemned the school and the two brick churches. She taught Stenography courses for 33 years, retiring in 1985. At present, she and her husband of nearly 65 years, own and operate Dishong Country Store Antiques on the edge of Anna. The store is furnished with antique showcases, and merchandise from Betty's grandfather Uriah Dishong's General Store, which was located in Hoytville, Wood County, Ohio. For solace and for her eyes alone, she would often put her thoughts on paper, especially if the thoughts were disturbing.

Book excerpt: Explores the rich history, collections, and significance of the only museum in the United States dedicated solely to the art form of dance. The only museum in the United States dedicated entirely to the art form of dance, the National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame opened in June 1987, after a short preview season the summer before. This unique and special place celebrates its thirtieth anniversary in 2017. To commemorate this milestone, Lisa Schlansker Kolosek has created a rich pictorial history tracing not only the museum’s remarkable evolution but the relevance of the museum to the city of Saratoga Springs, New York. Kolosek tells the story of the museum’s origins, from its notable founders’ grand idea to the selection and complete renovation of a historic 1920s bath house as its home. Combining a complete survey of exhibitions presented by the museum and the incredible history of the Hall of Fame, which recognizes dance luminaries across multiple genres, this book offers an in-depth look at the museum’s expansive collection of costumes, visual art, and archival materials. The book also covers the history of the museum’s Lewis A. Swyer Studios and School of the Arts, a leader in dance education. Beautifully illustrated with more than four hundred photographs, this book pays tribute to the immense impact of the National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame. Lisa Schlansker Kolosek is the research associate at the National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame and the author of The Invention of Chic: Thérèse Bonney and Paris Moderne.

When they were founded as the New York Highlanders, no one could have imagined how high they would land, capturing 40 American League pennants and a staggering 27 World Series championships. Many of baseball's all-time greats have shined in Yankee pinstripes on their way to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The dynasty's birth featured Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in the "House that Ruth Built." Legendary greats followed: Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Casey Stengel, and Reggie Jackson. In the new millennium, Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera picked up the torch, carrying it from the Bronx to Cooperstown.

Book excerpt: Companies with strong reputations are better able to attract customers, investors, and quality employees-and to survive crises that would destroy weaker firms. Fame and Fortune shows how to quantitatively measure your company's reputation, estimate its business value, and systematically enhance it over both the short- and long-term. First, you'll learn how to benchmark your firm's reputation against key rivals in six key areas, ranging from product quality to emotional appeal. Next, you'll discover that the winners of global reputation surveys get to the top by following a set of core principles through which they build visibility, distinctiveness, consistency, authenticity, and transparency. Then, starting from where you are now, you'll learn how to implement genuine corporate initiatives that strengthen two-way dialogue with all your stakeholders, and build the "reputational capital" you will need to succeed-and thrive. Why reputations matter: the proof, in cold, hard cash. Quantifying the "unquantifiable": the value of your corporate image. The reputation audit: discovering where you stand. Six key measures of your corporate reputation. Using the "Reputation Value Cycle" to your advantage. Creating a "virtuous circle" in which reputation enhances business corporate value. Making it real: the elements of trustworthiness. Building and communicating authenticity, consistency, and transparency. Standing apart from the crowd. Improving your visibility and your distinctiveness. How FedEx did it: lessons for your organization. Reputational best practices from a company built on trust. Create quantifiable business value by building your company's reputation. The definitive business reputation guide for every corporate officer, strategist, corporate communicator, and marketing professional How to audit your reputation-and benchmark your competitor An integrated approach that cuts across communications, strategy, marketing, and organization Techniques for strengthening your reputation with investors, customers, partners, regulators, citizens, and employees Includes detailed tools from the Reputation Institute's own StellarRep(r) model, the world's #1 reputation management toolkit Companies with great reputations do better on virtually every business metric.
