Book excerpt: Describes activities in the third year of a five-year collaborative test program in which the performance of the National Research Council's Falcon 20 research aircraft was tested on winter contaminated runway surfaces at the North Bay airport, January to March 1998. The objectives of the tests were to: determine the aircraft braking coefficients and aircraft contamination drag on various winter contaminated runway surfaces; obtain additional data to refine the Canadian Runway Friction Index tables for recommended landing distances; and obtain additional data towards the establishment of more accurate models for the effect of contamination on continued takeoff and rejected takeoff performance. Coasting runs with no pilot braking were done to verify the rolling friction coefficient and idle thrust, and to determine the contamination drag. Anti-skid braking runs were done to determine the braking coefficient. Three aircraft configurations were tested in the presence of natural snow accumulation on the runway: continued takeoff, rejected takeoff, and landing. Results are compared with those from previous years and braking performance results are compared with the friction index measured by an electronic recording decelerometer. Recommendations are made regarding both technical content and procedures for next year's test program.

This book was released on 1971 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The braking performance of a nine-place, light, twin-engine airplane was evaluated on comparative grooved and ungrooved surfaces of the landing research runway at NASA Wallops Station. The test airplane was equipped with manual braking on the main wheels of the tricycle landing gear, and its weight varied from 33.4 to 35.6 kN (7500 to 8000 Ib). The test results indicate that pavement grooving significantly improves aircraft braking and directional control on wet runways. Measurements and observations of airplane tire treads made during this test program showed no indication of unusual wear and/or damage attributable to grooved surfaces. Comparative braking data obtained with a jet fighter and a civil and a military jet transport are also presented.

Book excerpt: Introduction of transverse grooves on runways improves braking and cornering performance of aircraft during operations in wet weather conditions and helps to alleviate hydroplaning. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recommended 1/4-inch square grooves spaced at 1-1/4 inches for installation on runways where the potential of hydroplaning exists. However, a large number of runways remain nongrooved. The major reasons are the high cost of groove installation and limited evidence as to the effectiveness of the grooved surfaces at the touchdown speeds of modern aircraft. The findings of the research described in this report indicate that by increasing the spacing of the conventional saw-cut grooves (in the portland cement concrete surfaces) up to 3 inches, groove installation cost can be reduced by up to 25 percent compared to the installation cost of grooves spaced at 1-1/4 inches. The results further show that the friction levels available on these grooves under wet operating conditions are not significantly below those attained on grooves spaced at 1-1/4 inches. These results are valid for operating speeds of up to 150 knots. The results also show that a reflex-percussive cutting process is an alternative groove installation technique that produces V-grooves which provide braking performance comparable to that of conventional saw-cut grooves. The installation cost of these alternative grooves can be substantially less than that of saw-cut grooves. (Author).
