Book excerpt: Drawing on such canonical sources as Shakespeare, Arrested Development, U2, and many more, this collection of sermons connects the Good News about Jesus to our everyday life with wit and grace. Presenting Scripture's own sober view of things, Paul Walker diagnoses the pain, guilt, and failure that so often plague us. But amid that bleak account of our experience, the preacher's punch line is always the same: Christ died and rose again to heal, pardon, and free us. For every circumstance, these sermons remind us of the Gospel's sustaining hope.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This resource is offered as a guide to help clarify the theological trajectory of Methodism for the next century and beyond. It is nothing less than a robust affirmation of the historic Christian faith and the particular gifts of the Wesleyan movement within the larger Church. This text emerged from the Next Methodism Summit where more than fifty Wesleyan scholars gathered in Alexandria, Virginia, in January of 2022. The event was a time of worship, fellowship, and deep theological work. The end to which they gathered was to describe essential Methodist teachings that can face the challenges posed by cultural, social, and political forces that attempt to subvert the Christian witness and reroute the focus of the Wesleyan community. This resulting work resources a vital and growing Methodism that is founded on the truth of the Christian faith as it has been received (Jude 3). It is our hope that this message of God's self-revelation in the story of Israel and the person of Jesus of Nazareth, of wholeness, of love, and true freedom will be proclaimed by Wesleyan believers for centuries to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the National Study of Youth and Religion--the same invaluable data as its predecessor, Soul Searching: The Religious and Spiritual Lives of American Teenagers--Kenda Creasy Dean's compelling new book, Almost Christian, investigates why American teenagers are at once so positive about Christianity and at the same time so apathetic about genuine religious practice. In Soul Searching, Christian Smith and Melinda Lundquist Denton found that American teenagers have embraced a "Moralistic Therapeutic Deism"--a hodgepodge of banal, self-serving, feel-good beliefs that bears little resemblance to traditional Christianity. But far from faulting teens, Dean places the blame for this theological watering down squarely on the churches themselves. Instead of proclaiming a God who calls believers to lives of love, service and sacrifice, churches offer instead a bargain religion, easy to use, easy to forget, offering little and demanding less. But what is to be done? In order to produce ardent young Christians, Dean argues, churches must rediscover their sense of mission and model an understanding of being Christian as not something you do for yourself, but something that calls you to share God's love, in word and deed, with others. Dean found that the most committed young Christians shared four important traits: they could tell a personal and powerful story about God; they belonged to a significant faith community; they exhibited a sense of vocation; and they possessed a profound sense of hope. Based on these findings, Dean proposes an approach to Christian education that places the idea of mission at its core and offers a wealth of concrete suggestions for inspiring teens to live more authentically engaged Christian lives. Persuasively and accessibly written, Almost Christian is a wake up call no one concerned about the future of Christianity in America can afford to ignore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular Bible teacher and host of the Gospel Truth broadcast, Andrew Wommack takes on one of the biggest controversies of the church, the freedom of God's grace verses the faith of the believer. Wommack reveals that God's power is not released from only grace or only faith. God's blessings come through a balance of both grace and faith. Addressing many of the misconceptions believers are taught in the Church today, this book opens up the Scriptures revealing the vital connection between grace and faith. Many believers think they walk in both grace and faith when actually they are misusing one or both of these principles. Wommack addresses: * Some believers willingly sin believing Gods grace will cover them, while the blessing of grace is not to sin, but to release guilt and condemnation when they make a mistake. * Other believers think they must "work" their faith by ritualistic prayer, confession, or Bible study. Although all these things are good, Jesus Christ set believers free from works of the law. God wants a relationship where He can communicate directly to each believer. * Grace and faith work together. When believers receive the unmerited favor or grace of God, they can release their faith without doubt or reservation and receive God's blessings. Andrew Wommack in his logical, practical style brings believers back on track in their Christian walk through living in the balance of grace and faith.

Perhaps one of these questions has kept your thoughts captive. The apostle Peter in 1 Peter 1 communicates the inner workings of salvation and what salvation will bring forth in a person’s life with profound clarity. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Peter describes what a Christian is, what a Christian has to look forward to, and what being a Christian will increasingly mean as we live as exiles in this world. In A Steadfast Faith we examine the faith delivered to the saints once and for all with the goal of a greater assurance of God’s salvation and a more fervent desire to know the God who justifies, sanctifies, and glorifies all those with a God-given steadfast faith in the gospel.
