Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important study Hays argues against the mainstream that any attempt to account for the nature and method of Paul's theological language must first reckon with the centrality of narrative elements in his thought. Through an in-depth investigation of Galatians 3:1-4:11, Hays shows that the framework of Paul's thought is neither a system of doctrines nor his personal religious experience but the "sacred story" of Jesus Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Currie was raised in a devout Christian family whose father was a fundamentalist preacher and both parents teachers at Moody Bible Institute. Currie's whole upbringing was immersed in the life of fundamentalist Protestantism - theology professors, seminary presidents and founders of evangelical mission agencies were frequent guests at his family dinner table. Currie received a degree from Trinity International University and studied in the Masters of Divinity program. This book was written as an explanation to his fundamentalist and evangelical friends and family about why he became a Roman Catholic. Currie presents a very lucid, systematic and intelligible account of the reasons for his conversion to the ancient Church that Christ founded. He gives a detailed discussion of the important theological and doctrinal beliefs Catholic and evangelicals hold in common, as well as the key doctrines that separate us, particularly the Eucharist, the Pope, and Mary.

Book excerpt: This highly rewarding work goes back to a time when theological discussion was not considered "heavy". It contains an inspirational treatment of the subject of conversion, and sees faith as creating fresh possibilities that can lead to great accomplishments. In modest, inspiring, but still powerful language, it puts forward many important ideas using a sensible, logical plan that helps the individual interact with God in his new-found spiritual life. As the title suggests, The New Birth views the concept of conversion as a momentous, singular event. Austin Phelps discusses the subject in relation to the subjects of guilt, self-respect, ritual, laws, mysticism, regeneration, the power of truth, the role of the preacher, and personal responsibility. Phelps strikes just the right balance of advice, admonition, dogma and social commentary. His writing is almost poetic, yet it is also steady, careful, straightforward and compelling. Although Phelps saw great value in the spreading of ideas through preaching, he perceived this form of address as more than a lecture; indeed, it was a kind of conversation, where people could stop to think, ask questions, and proceed to learn further. The author understood that the profundities of Christianity could not be laid out in a simple sermon; they need to be expounded upon with a great diligence and earnestness, in direct language that does not trivialize, but still maintains the purity of the fundamental concept.

Book excerpt: A GUIDEBOOK ON WHY AND HOW TO BE SAVED Why do we need a spiritual "new birth"? How is it even possible? The concept sounded strange to Jesus' audience. It can sound even stranger in our day, when many wonder why good people need it--and how bad people could still deserve it. Yet Jesus knew (and we know too) that we humans are deeply flawed. We need a new beginning. In New Birth, Strickland and Westbrook walk through our need for a new birth and the way to be born again, according to Jesus. What is the point of baptism? Why do we need to repent? This book guides readers to know what the Bible teaches about the why and how of being born again. This book equips disciple makers to teach baptism from a biblical foundation. -- Brett Andrews, founding pastor of New Life Christian Church This book establishes the necessary doctrinal foundation for a global movement of disciple making in a clear and solid way. -- Brandon Guindon, founding pastor of Real Life Texas, Houston, TX This well-written book will help those thinking about becoming Christians and deepen the understanding of those who are already Christians. -- Dr. Sherry Pollard, Professor, Harding University MICHAEL STRICKLAND (PhD, University of Birmingham) is Director of Instruction and Associate Professor of Theology and Mathematics at Amridge University. He also holds a Bachelor and Master of Science in Mathematics from Auburn University and Master of Arts in Biblical Studies from Lipscomb University. Book excerpt: Following fourteen years as a parish minister in the Church of Scotland, Dr Andrew McGowan became the first Director of the Highland Theological Institute which opened in Elgin in N.E. Scotland in 1994. He writes with special concern for the young Christian: ?This is a guidebook intended for those who have embarked on the journey of faith.' His principal aim is that they reach a better understanding of what has happened, and will happen, to them as a consequence of the new birth which marks the very beginning of the Christian's new life and leads to the faith which is the gift of God's grace. After helpful chapters on the need for, and the nature of regeneration, there are three chapters dealing with justification, and six on sanctification. In this way, Dr McGowan shows how the new birth leads to a new relationship with God and to holiness of life. John Blanchard remarks in his Foreword, ?All the important doctrines involved in the experience of becoming a Christian are carefully linked together in a way which makes one marvel all the more at the grace of God in salvation.' The treatment of these doctrines is naturally brief as this book is intended as a ?starter'. Should we look forward to a ?finisher'? The reader is presented with an abundance of Bible references as he goes along, rather than at the ends of chapters, and he is advised to ?look up the passages from the Bible as they are mentioned'. In Chapter 13, the author points to how regeneration fits into the doctrines already examined, showing from Romans 8: 28 - 30 how Paul is speaking about the place of born-again people in God's plan, and the certainty of salvation of those upon whom God has set his love in advance. In Chapter 14, Dr McGowan deals with ?effectual calling', to show how the salvation provided for God's people in Jesus Christ takes place. The final chapter addresses the non-Christian reader with searching questions. This book should be available on the church bookstall.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conversion has played a central role in the history of Christianity. In this first in-depth and wide-ranging narrative history, David Kling examines the dynamic of turning to the Christian faith by individuals, families, and people groups. Global in reach, the narrative progresses from early Christian beginnings in the Roman world to Christianity's expansion into Europe, the Americas, China, India, and Africa. Conversion is often associated with a particular strand of modern Christianity (evangelical) and a particular type of experience (sudden, overwhelming). However, when examined over two millennia, it emerges as a phenomenon far more complex than any one-dimensional profile would suggest. No single, unitary paradigm defines conversion and no easily explicable process accounts for why people convert to Christianity. Rather, a multiplicity of factors-historical, personal, social, geographical, theological, psychological, and cultural-shape the converting process. A History of Christian Conversion not only narrates the conversions of select individuals and peoples, it also engages current theories and models to explain conversion, and examines recurring themes in the conversion process: divine presence, gender and the body, agency and motivation, testimony and memory, group- and self-identity, "authentic" and "nominal" conversion, and modes of communication. Accessible to scholars, students, and those with a general interest in conversion, Kling's book is the most satisfying and comprehensive account of conversion in Christian history to date; this major work will become a standard must-read in conversion studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Conversion takes a hard look at the truth behind the unyielding depravities that plague America with a special focus on the African American culture. Many professed believers think they have a personal faith walk with God, yet cannot understand why tribulations persist in their personal lives and their communities. This book exposes that there are many who have professed belief in God's Messiah, but, their faith is integrated with false spiritual and political dogma, true repentance from their sinful nature eludes them. Thus, a counterfeit faith is born. However, this book directs the reader to Biblical truth and will show God's perspective in regards to society's errors about moral issues; therefore, helping professed Christians see where they are in error, and where their loyalties ought to lie. Consequently, true holiness will be achieved. God will be [positively] provoked to intercede for those who were once deceived, resulting in genuine salvation, harmony and godly prosperity. David L. Brown has lived in historic Charles City County, Virginia most of his life. For years, he has spoken passionately about America's disregard for God's will concerning social and political issues that influence our lives. This book serves to remind individuals that God's way and His thoughts are without recanting and must always be embraced. Brown is also the author of Like Fire Shut Up in My Bones.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our day of "easy believism" and a culture which is dominated by the philosophy of humanism, it becomes the church to clarify exactly what it means to believe in Jesus Christ. Jesus made clear that when he returns... Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. (Matthew 7:22-23) The church needs to make clear in its presentation of the gospel and in its appeals to the hearers that to believe in Jesus is far more than a simple mental decision on the part of the listener. First, it means that the person has been drawn to God by the Holy Spirit. Second, it means that God has done the work of regeneration--the miracle of transforming a person from being a natural person born into the world to a spiritual person born into God's eternal kingdom. Jesus said, "Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die" (John 11:26). At the heart of Jesus's discussion of the new birth is the following simple statement by Jesus which needs to be understood and experienced by anyone drawn by God's Spirit: The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. (John 3:8) When a person is born of the Spirit, it is the direct result of the work of the Spirit "blowing upon" him. He may realize immediately what has happened in him, or it may be sometime later that the newness of his inner being is recognized. But that he is a new creature will inevitably be obvious to the newborn believer. God has done it!
