Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Not Just Make the Cake? That’s a question countless people across the country started asking in 2012, when Jack Phillips told two men who walked into his Masterpiece Cakeshop that he couldn’t create a custom cake for their same-sex wedding. And the question only grew more urgent as Phillips had to defend himself first before the Colorado Civil Rights Commission and then numerous courts—losing at every step of the way until the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in his favor in June 2018. Why not just make the cake? Submitting would have been less frightening than facing relentless harassment and death threats. It would have been less costly than losing a major portion of his business when the state demanded that he design cakes for same-sex weddings or none at all. And it would have been easier than a decade of fighting for his rights—and his livelihood—in court, a fight he has been forced to continue even after his victory at the Supreme Court. But for Jack Phillips, there are deeper principles at stake—principles too precious to abandon for the sake of convenience and safety. These principles should be of concern to every American, including Jack’s adversaries. If the freedoms Jack has sought to protect are lost, they may never be regained. Why not just make the cake? In this inspiring book, Jack answers that question in his own words, hoping his story will inspire and strengthen the many who will encounter challenges, however fearsome, to living out their faith.

Book excerpt: By turns lyrical and touching, set amid a landscape of beauty, "Faith's Lesson - The Chronicles of Barrow's Hollow" takes the reader on travels with a turn-of-the-century New England heroine. Armed with tenacious self-reliance and wit, bolstered by faith and values, the young girl finds herself in a world of circumstance quite unlike that of her own. Struggling with her stirring feelings for a suitor of means and privilege, Faith is forced to confront her past, her roots, and her truest test of priority in life. Lost family members and seemingly lost hope converge to lead Faith to her most important decision. "Faith's Lesson" captures the reader's imagination as the struggles, hopes, and dreams of a young girl and the feverish progress of her years have become a series of vignettes, as though they were a recollection of a dream. Nothing remains now of those times, save a majestic memory. As this narrative recollects, you are invited to share those memories, which until now have remained safe in the hallowed quiets of Barrow's Hollow.

(Release Date TBD) Poetry, on the other hand, offers us deep riches of meaning with a remarkable economy of words. This was an art of wisdom often chosen by the mystics of the West and popularized by the hymnodists. In this sense, poetry and particularly Christian poetry continues to offer a counterpoint to the dry, wordy explanation that often stupefies the human spirit more than it edifies. From these lines, poet and author Peter Menkin, Obl Cam OSB, takes readers on a contemplative and inspiring journey and adventure through his collection of meaningful poems, Seasons of Faith: Religious and Spiritual Poetry. In this collection of contemplative poems, readers will uncover a very old challenge to the people in the 21st century a challenge not unlike that penned by some favorite Anglican poets across the ages. Through this moving and distinctive anthology that also depicts the poets colorful character, they will find a blend of humor, personality, poignancy, spiritual reflection, and popular culture. Seasons of Faith: Religious and Spiritual Poetry captures readers senses and give them a reflective experience allowing them to boost their spirit and inspire them to live a meaningful life. Spiritually inspiring, filled with insights, and life altering, Seasons of Faith: Religious and Spiritual Poetry is an engaging poetry read that everyone will surely enjoy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human impulse to religion--the drive to explain the world, humans, and humans’ place in the universe – can be seen to encompass environmentalism as an offshoot of the secular, material faith in human reason and power that dominates modern society. Faith in Nature traces the history of environmentalism--and its moral thrust--from its roots in the Enlightenment and Romanticism through the Progressive Era to the present. Drawing astonishing parallels between religion and environmentalism, the book examines the passion of the movement’s adherents and enemies alike, its concern with the moral conduct of daily life, and its attempt to answer fundamental questions about the underlying order of the world and of humanity’s place within it. Thomas Dunlap is among the leading environmental historians and historians of science in the United States. Originally trained as a chemist, he has a rigorous understanding of science and appreciates its vital importance to environmental thought. But he is also a devout Catholic who believes that the insights of religious revelation need not necessarily be at odds with the insights of scientific investigation. This book grew from his own religious journey and his attempts to understand human ethical obligations and spiritual debts to the natural world. CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title 2005

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this profoundly original and far-reaching study, Robert M. Polhemus shows how novels have helped to make erotic love a matter of faith in modern life. Erotic faith, Polhemus argues, is an emotional conviction—ultimately religious in nature—that meaning, value, hope, and even the possibility of transcendence can be found in love. Drawing on a wide range of disciplines, Polhemus shows the reciprocity of love as subject, the novel as form, and faith as motive in important works by Jane Austen, Walter Scott, the Brontës, Dickens, George Eliot, Trollope, Thomas Hardy, Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, and Samuel Beckett. Throughout, Polhemus relates the novelists' representation of love to that of such artists as Botticelli, Vermeer, Claude Lorrain, Redon, and Klimt. Juxtaposing their paintings with nineteenth- and twentieth-century texts both reveals the ways in which novels develop and individualize common erotic and religious themes and illustrates how the novel has influenced our perception of all art.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Legacy of Lessons Learned: Landstuhl Regional Medical Center During Wartime, 2001-2014: For over 25 years, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC) has served as a model of "selfless service," stepping up to the demands of a suddenly increased rate of traumatically injured service members arriving from the battlefield. From Operations Desert Storm/Desert Shield; through the attacks in Somalia, the Khobar Towers, and USS Co≤ to the recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, LRMC has stood at the forefront of military healthcare, receiving our Nation's and our partners' wounded and ill from battlefields and contingencies across multiple theaters. From a community hospital providing routine healthcare delivery to personnel stationed in Europe and their families before 9/11, LRMC transitioned into a Level 1, triservice, integrated trauma center, providing lifesaving care to tens of thousands of evacuated service members, in addition to handling all the associated needs of these patients, from payroll assistance to chaplain services, service and unit liaison support, and veteran service organization support, as well as delivering ongoing healthcare to beneficiaries across Europe, Africa, and Asia. The goal of this text is to share the lessons learned by LRMC staff in converting from a peacetime to wartime footing, serving as a guide for US military hospitals in similar situations in the future. The innovations and solutions planned and implemented so successfully by LRMC staff will assist future military medical and line leaders in maintaining the highest quality of healthcare services for future generations of our service men and women in combat, improving upon the historically high survival rates seen in these conflicts.
