Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In nineteenth-century Britain, the spectacular and highly profitable theatrical form known as "pantomime" was part of a shared cultural repertoire and a significant medium for the transmission of stories. Rowdy, comedic, and slightly risqué, pantomime productions were situated in dynamic relationship with various forms of print and material culture. Popular fairy-tale theater also informed the production and reception of folklore research in ways that are often overlooked. In Staging Fairyland: Folklore, Children’s Entertainment, and Nineteenth-Century Pantomime, Jennifer Schacker reclaims the place of theatrical performance in this history, developing a model for the intermedial and cross-disciplinary study of narrative cultures. The case studies that punctuate each chapter move between the realms of print and performance, scholarship and popular culture. Schacker examines pantomime productions of such well-known tales as "Cinderella," "Little Red Riding Hood," and "Jack and the Beanstalk," as well as others whose popularity has waned—such as, "Daniel O’Rourke" and "The Yellow Dwarf." These productions resonate with traditions of impersonation, cross-dressing, literary imposture, masquerade, and the social practice of "fancy dress." Schacker also traces the complex histories of Mother Goose and Mother Bunch, who were often cast as the embodiments of both tale-telling and stage magic and who move through various genres of narrative and forms of print culture. These examinations push at the limits of prevailing approaches to the fairy tale across media. They also demonstrate the degree to which perspectives on the fairy tale as children's entertainment often obscure the complex histories and ideological underpinnings of specific tales. Mapping the histories of tales requires a fundamental reconfiguration of our thinking about early folklore study and about "fairy tales": their bearing on questions of genre and ideology but also their signifying possibilities—past, present, and future. Readers interested in folklore, fairy-tale studies, children’s literature, and performance studies will embrace this informative monograph.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2009 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Where did Cinderella come from? Puss in Boots? Rapunzel? The origins of fairy tales are looked at in a new way in these highly engaging pages. Conventional wisdom holds that fairy tales originated in the oral traditions of peasants and were recorded for posterity by the Brothers Grimm during the nineteenth century. Ruth B. Bottigheimer overturns this view in a lively account of the origins of these well-loved stories. Charles Perrault created Cinderella and her fairy godmother, but no countrywoman whispered this tale into Perrault's ear. Instead, his Cinderella appeared only after he had edited it from the book of often amoral tales published by Giambattista Basile in Naples. Distinguishing fairy tales from folktales and showing the influence of the medieval romance on them, Bottigheimer documents how fairy tales originated as urban writing for urban readers and listeners. Working backward from the Grimms to the earliest known sixteenth-century fairy tales of the Italian Renaissance, Bottigheimer argues for a book-based history of fairy tales. The first new approach to fairy tale history in decades, this book answers questions about where fairy tales came from and how they spread, illuminating a narrative process long veiled by surmise and assumption.

Book excerpt: Return to fairy tales with happy endings, that have a cozy urban fantasy twist.Walk in the shoes of the magical creatures that only a lucky few have glimpsed. Get drawn into a world of the original hobbits of lore, fall in love with selkies, and explore the lives of witches who work for the fairies.Once, not so long ago people talked about encountering fairies the way we might talk about meeting a celebrity. For people believed that fairies were their neighbors, even if they rarely ever saw them, they knew they were close by, protecting their homes and villages.Written by a folklorist this book uses actual tales of fairies in ways you likely have never seen them,, but have likely always dreamed of. For we still hear the whispers of our magical past, even if we can't recall it.Once upon a time, people believed that fairies were not some distant beings, living off in Neverland or Wonderland. Rather, fairies were people's neighbors. People had to be careful where they threw out their old water, for fear of it hitting an invisible fairy, they had to keep the commons between the fields clean because this was where the fairies lived, and they should leave clean water out at night in case the fairies came for a visit. Fairies were a part of people's communities. This is a collection of stories based on actual folklore about people's interactions with the fairies, most often from the fairies perspective.

Book excerpt: The Middle Kingdom! Various times and peoples have given it different names. To some it was Paradise, to others Tir-nan-Og; Arthurian Avalon; Fairyland; the World of Immortal Youth; the Land of Heart's Desire. Where exactly is that country? Well, if God's is the world of creative power and ours the world of created objects, the fairy world is the land of life that lies between them, serv-ing as the bridge for their interaction. The fairyland and its denizens have long been the concern of poets, painters, and storytellers. Not only are these beings charged with the maintenance of Nature's household but with her evolutionary plans as well. Our recognition of them and their work helps their efforts prosper and helps the earth be carried forward in its evolution. Marjorie Spock draws aside the veil obscuring the life of the "Little People" and makes their magic world come alive for us. Included are color paintings of the four races of Little People: Undines (water spir-its), Gnomes (earth spirits), Sylphs (air spirits), and Fire-Spirits. This is a delightful and engaging book!
