Book excerpt: Originally published in 1922, The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault is a wonderful collection of some true classics of children’s literature. Perrault (1628 – 1703) was among the first writers to bring magical children’s stories into the literary mainstream, proving to his original seventeenth century readers that such works were important, enjoyable, as well as thought-provoking. They remain as popular today, as they were then. This edition contains ten of Perrault's most famous works, including ‘Cinderella’, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, ‘Sleeping Beauty in The Wood’, and ‘The Master Cat - or Puss in Boots’, 'Blue Beard', 'Donkeyskin' and others. The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault are accompanied by the dazzling illustrations of a master of the trade; Harry Clarke (1889 – 1931). Clarke was an Irish stained-glass artist and book illustrator – and a leading figure in the Irish Arts and Crafts Movement. His drawings were inspired by the Art Nouveax style so typical of this period – and his sinuous lines combined with delicate colouring earned him a reputation as a preeminent illustrator of the ‘Golden Age.’ Presented alongside the text, Clarke’s enchanting creations serve to further refine and enhance Perrault’s magical storytelling – making this a book to be enjoyed and appreciated, by both young and old alike.

Book excerpt: CHARLES PERRAULT (12 January 1628 - 16 May 1703) was a French author and member of the Academie Francaise. He laid the foundations for a new literary genre, the fairy tale, with his works derived from pre-existing folk tales. The best known of his tales include Le Petit Chaperon Rouge (Little Red Riding Hood), Cendrillon (Cinderella), Le Chat Botte (Puss in Boots), La Belle au bois Dormant (The Sleeping Beauty), and Barbe Bleue (Bluebeard). Some of Perrault's versions of old stories may have influenced the German versions published by the Brothers Grimm more than 100 years later. The stories continue to be printed and have been adapted to opera, ballet (such as Tchaikovsky's The Sleeping Beauty), theatre, and film. Perrault was an influential figure in the 17th-century French literary scene, and was the leader of the Modern faction during the Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns. This edition is an athoritative translation by Robert Samber and J. E. Mansion, with the original color illustrations and ornamentations by Harry Clarke."

He can be ranked with the brothers Grimm and with Hans Christian Andersen as masters in this class of literature. Because he wrote so much earlier than Grimm and Andersen, much of his work was copied, adapted, or even passed off as original by these later writers. His stories include the best-known stories in this category, such as 'Sleeping Beauty', 'Cinderella' and 'Little Red Riding Hood'.

Book excerpt: Charles Perrault ranks alongside Hans Christian Andersen and the Grimms as a master storyteller. Perhaps he is less well known because he had done in the late 1600,s what the Grimm Bros. did in the mid-1800’s, which overshadowed his earlier achievements. In fact the Grimm Bros. translated a lot of Perrault’s stories into German and rebranded them in their own volumes. Like Dickens and Andersen in their time, during his own age Perrault (1628 – 1703) was one of the best-liked personages and has remained ever since a prime favourite. Everyone likes a man who enjoys life. Perrault was such a man and he was more. He was the cause of enjoyment to countless of his fellow countrymen, and his stories still promise enjoyment to countless more to come. We are fortunate in knowing a great deal about his varied life, deriving our knowledge mainly from D'Alembert's history of the French Academy and from his own memoirs. It was his enjoyment of life which led him to translate folklore and fairy tales, initially from France, but as empires expanded, he embarked upon translating and publishing stories from around the world. "La Belle au Bois Dormant" ("Sleeping Beauty") was the first: and a number in quick succession rapidly followed - "Le Petit Chaperon Rouge" (Red Riding-Hood), "Le Maistre Chat, ou le Chat Botté" (Puss in Boots), "Les Fées" (The Fairy), "Cendrillon, ou la Petite Pantoufle de Verre" (Cinderella), "Riquet à la Houppe" (Riquet of the Tuft), and "Le Petit Poucet" (Tom Thumb) all of which appear in this volume. The stories soon crossed the Channel; and were translated by Mr Samber (presumably one Robert Samber) and printed for J. Pote. of New Inn. The first edition won a wide popularity, evidenced by the fact that there was a seventh edition published in 1795 for J. Rivington, a bookseller from New York. Additional stories in this illustrated volume are: “Blue Beard”, “The Ridiculous Wishes” and “Donkey-Skin”. We invite you to download and enjoy these stories, which are as close to the originals as you are ever likely to get. The 10 full page colour illustrations and 36 Pen and Ink illustrations by Irishman Harry Clarke (1889 – 1931) bring an added dimension to these lively stories. Rest assured, once you read these to the younger members of your family, they will keep on coming back to you for more. ============== KEYWORDS/TAGS: Folklore, fairy tales, myths, Legends, French, France, Charles Perrault, illustrated, Children’s stories, storyteller, fables, moral tales, myths, happiness, laughter, Little, Red Riding-Hood, The Fairy, Blue Beard, Sleeping Beauty, Woods, Master Cat, Puss In Boots, Cinderella, Glass Slipper, Riquet, Tuft, Little Thumb, Ridiculous Wishes, Donkey, Skin, Prince, Princess, King, Queen, mother, key, closet, misfortune, aged Countryman, Sauce, Marquis, joy, Crystal slipper, shoe, Jupiter, thunderbolts, black pudding, wriggle, ornament, beauty, gown, colour of the moon, Curiosity, keyhole, La Belle au Bois Dormant, Le Petit Chaperon Rouge, Le Maistre Chat, ou le Chat Botté, Les Fées, Cendrillon, ou la Petite Pantoufle de Verre, Riquet à la Houppe, Le Petit Poucet

Book excerpt: HARRY CLARKE (1889-1931) was a leading figure in the Irish Arts and Crafts movement and is best known for his stained glass designs and book illustrations. This collection concentrates on his work for various published books. His psychedelic with a hint of the grotesque black and white line work incorporated the most detailed and intricate textures. His distinctive style established him as one of the leading illustrators of the early 20th century. His first published work was 'Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen. A number of commissions followed including among others 'The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault', Goethe's 'Faust' and probably his best known work for Poe's 'Tales of Mystery and Imagination'. This superb compilation features over 120 examples of Clarke's colour paintings and black and white pen work, mostly full page. A comprehensive collection that is certain to delight lovers of the great artists from the 'Golden Age' of illustration.

Book excerpt: Stained glass, Symbolism, Decadence, Celtic mysticism, Art Nouveau and the Ballets Russes - all these elements claim a place in the definition of Harry Clarke. Born a century ago, this Dublin artist, son of an English father and an Irish mother, worked intensely at his art, as if conscious that death would overtake him at an early age. Clarke is now recognized internationally as a bizarre genius of his age, as the Irish Beardsley. This is the story of a questing soul with a complex imagination who produced prolifically and with outstanding originality. His skill and vision has not been equaled and this book is based on a study which won the 1984 CINOA Art History Laureate and is richly illustrated, bringing the range and importance of Clarke's work to general attention.

This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1924, this collection The Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen is illustrated with the magnificent Art Nouveau colour illustrations of Kay Nielsen. It was a project that took Nielsen twelve years to complete, and his illustrations perfectly capture the other-worldly spirit of Andersen's subject matter. It includes such well-known and loved tales as 'The Snow Queen', 'The Real Princess', 'The Hardy Tin Soldier' and 'The Nightingale.' Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish poet and author celebrated for his children's stories but perhaps best known for his fables and fairy tales – meant for both adults and children. They were frequently written in a colloquial style, using idioms and spoken language in a manner previously unseen in Danish literature. Though simple at first glance, the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen often convey sophisticated moral teachings; in equal measure heart-breaking and heart-warming. Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) was a Danish illustrator of the golden age of illustration. He was influenced by Japanese art and the Swedish folklore – becoming a crucial participant in the Art Nouveaux movement. His art is characterised by long, swooping lines, open spaces and a certain macabre, yet ephemeral quality. Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further refine and elucidate Andersen's masterful storytelling.
