Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herschel Williams selected these twelve fairy tales from a great geographic range, mostly from across Europe, with two from North America and one from Japan. The tone of this story book is gentle and familiar, but without shying away from the occasionally gruesome details that make fairytales so enticing for younger readers. While many of the tropes are similar to the fairytales we are all familiar with from the Grimm brothers, with lots of events occurring in threes and forgotten younger siblings often turning out to have the wisdom, kindness or bravery their older siblings lack, these are a set of entirely different stories from around the world. The collective imagination of the various fairy tale tellers must have been limitless to create such a wide range of these magical stories. In the first of these stories, the Irish story Yellow Lily, the hero is a cocky young prince who loves to gamble, and is saved from a grisly fate by the eponymous Yellow Lily. Yellow Lily is a heroine who doesn't mind using her wits to lash the hero when he needs it, rather than a merely a meek story device. This story also contains the great tongue twister "Yellow Lily of Loch Lein," try saying that with your mouth full! Each of the other stories are at least as fascinating, such as the Scandinavian tale The Mysterious Prince which starts like Beauty And The Beast and ends very differently, or the Canadian The Goddess Of Light, which reads like a cross between Bluebeard and a creation myth. Princes, princesses, elves and giants all abound in these stories, and the evil ones are guaranteed to get their comeuppance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Fairy Tales, Folklore and Legends The stories have yet to be discovered which can compete with folk-lore stories in fascination for the young, and the reason for this it is not hard to divine. The folk-lore tale has had its origin among plain, artless people, in many respects only grown up children, and its survival to our times is simply evidence of these people having regarded it as being too excellent for them to allow it to be lost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fairy Tales and Other Stories And the Shilling rattled and jumped for joy as it was thrust back into the purse. So here it lay among strange companions, who came and went, each making room for a successor but the Shilling from home always remained in the bag which was a distinction for it. Several weeks had gone by, and the Shilling had travelled far out into the world without exactly knowing where he was, though he learned from the other coins that they were French or Italian. One said they were in such and such a town, another that they had reached such and such a spot; but the Shilling could form no idea of all this. He who has his head in a bag sees nothing; and this was the case with the Shilling. But one day, as he lay there, he noticed that the purse was not shut, and so he crept forward to the opening, to take a look around. He ought not to have done so; but he was inquisitive, and people Often have to pay for that. He slipped out into the fob: and when the purse was taken out at night the Shilling remained behind, and was sent out into the passage with the clothes. There he fell upon the floor: no one heard it, no one saw it. Next morning the clothes were carried back into the room; the gentleman put them on, and continued his journey, while the Shilling remained behind. The coin was found, and was required to go into ser vice again, so he was sent out with three other coins. It is a pleasant thing to look about one in the world, thought the Shilling, and to get to know strange people and foreign customs. And now began the history of the Shilling, as told by himself. And Off he would go to his beloved hunting which was his favorite pastime. The land was fertile, and nobody had ever entertained an idea that bad weather might some year affect the crops and cause a scarcity of grain. They took no precautions to lay in stocks of wheat, and so when one summer there was a great lack of rain and the fields were parched, the winter that followed was marked by suffer ing. The kingdom was faced by famine, and the people did not like it. They did not know what to do, and when they appealed to the king, he could not help them. It is but right to say, however, that as the work advanced through the press, I felt Impelled to make the alterations in the text, and especially in the translation, much more thorough-going than I had at first contemplated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herman Hofberg compiles 82 stories in one volume, titled simply as Swedish Fairy Tales, with the main intention of augmenting efforts to preserve some of Sweden's beloved folk tales and pay homage to Swedish literature and history. This edition is a translation of the original book, published in 1890. W.H. Myers, the translator, has assured in his preface that he has done "no embellishment and not more than a faithful reproduction of the author's ideas." The translator also informs that he has left out some notes that the author has made on some passages in the stories and added some of them into the tales as a natural part of the accounts, rather than put all of them in a separate section in the book. This helps readers go through the stories without having to flip through other pages for the supplemental information. The compiler has grouped the fairy tales by region, beginning with Skane and ending with Lapland. Nearly all stories are supplied with beautiful artistic renderings of the tale in question. The illustrations, done by some of the best Swedish artists of the time, are new additions, courtesy of the translator. Those aged 8-80, Swedish or otherwise, will enjoy reading these stories for both their entertainment and educational value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Index to Fairy Tales, Myths and Legends The increased use of the story hour in work with children and the ever-widening use of fables and myths in school work have Shown the need of an index which would save time by indicating at a glance the source of an asked - for story. When eight out of ten versions of a myth are given in their respective books under different titles bearing little or no resemblance to the one Sought for, when each new translator or compiler may give an entire set of new titles to old favorites, mechanical aid is necessary to Save reason as well as time. This index includes, besides fairy tales and fables, the stories from Greek and Norse mythology which seemed most likely to be called for, also hero stories and some modern stories like the Leak in the dyke, which are not strictly fairy tale or legend but which are constantly asked for by teachers and story tellers. Since inquiries for stories are mainly by title this is first of all a title index. When the same story appears under various titles, it is indexed under the best known or under the one that seemed most descriptive of the story, and references are made from all the other titles. The title as contained in each particular book, when differing from the one under which it is indexed, is given in parenthesis at the end of the entry. In the case of mythology and hero stories the titles have been inverted, or invented if necessary, in order to bring the entry under the name of the character. When a book con tains a number of stories about the same person but bear ing different titles, a general reference to the book is given; when two only, but not in direct Sequence, the titles are given in parenthesis at the end of the entry. The cross references from one story to another are intended to aid story tellers by suggesting similar stories in case the one wished for is not obtainable. The cross references from subjects - holidays, stars, flowers, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Folk Tales From the Russian N Russia, as elsewhere in the world, folklore is rapidly scattering before the practical Spirit of modern progress. The traveling peasant bard or story teller, and the devoted nyanya, the beloved nurse of many a generation, are rapidly dying out, and with them the tales and legends, the last echoes of the nation's early joys and sufferings, hopes and fears, are passing away. The student of folk-lore knows that the time has come when haste is needed to catch these van ishing songs of the nation's youth and to pre serve them for the delight of future generations. In sending forth the stories in the present vol ume, all of which are here set down in print for the first time, it is my hope that they may enable American children to share with the children of Russia the pleasure of glancing into the magic world of the old Slavic nation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Swedish Fairy Book The following volume of Swedish fairy-tales represents a careful choice, after the best original sources, of those examples of their kind which not only appeared most colorful and entertaining, but also most racially Swedish in their flavor. For the fairy-tales of each of the three Scandinavian countries, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, have a distinct local color of their own. The wealth of material available has made it possible to give due representation to most types of fairy-tales, from the stories of older origin, the tales of giant, troll, and werewolf, to such delightful tales as "Lasse, My Thrall," and "The Princess and the Glass Mountain," colored with the rich and ornate stylistic garb of medieval chivalric poesy. There has been no attempt to "rewrite" these charming folk- and fairy-tales in the translation. They have been faithfully narrated in the simple, naive manner which their traditional rendering demands. And this is one reason, perhaps, why they should appeal to young American readers - for young America by instinct takes kindly to that which is straightforward and sincere, in the realm of fairy-tale as in life itself.
