This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improved fuel reliability means reduced fuel failures in reactor operation. Fuel failures, with their consequent adverse impact on the environment and requirements for additional waste management, result in costs for remediation, 'failed core' operation and maintenance. Therefore, poor performance of fuel can lead to uncompetitive operational conditions for a nuclear power plant. A revision of the earlier edition, this publication has been significantly extended to support nuclear fuel designers, manufacturers, reactor operators, and fuel engineers and managers on fuel design and design changes, fuel manufacturing, qualification, in-reactor operation, and on-site services to achieve excellence in fuel reliability and performance and safe operation of nuclear fuel under all applicable plant states.

Book excerpt: Nuclear Fuel Elements: Design, Fabrication and Performance is concerned with the design, fabrication, and performance of nuclear fuel elements, with emphasis on fast reactor fuel elements. Topics range from fuel types and the irradiation behavior of fuels to cladding and duct materials, fuel element design and modeling, fuel element performance testing and qualification, and the performance of water reactor fuels. Fast reactor fuel elements, research and test reactor fuel elements, and unconventional fuel elements are also covered. This volume consists of 12 chapters and begins with an overview of nuclear reactors and fuel elements, as well as fuel element design and development based on the reactor operator's approach, materials scientist's approach, and interdisciplinary approach. The reader is then introduced to different types of nuclear fuels and their irradiation behavior, considerations for using cladding and duct materials in fuel element design and development, and fuel element design and modeling. The chapters that follow focus on the testing of fuel element performance, experimental techniques and equipment for testing fuel element designs, and the performance of fuels for water reactors. Fuel elements for gas-cooled reactors, fast reactors, and research and test reactors are also described. The book concludes with an assessment of unconventional fuel elements. This book will be useful to fuel element technologists as well as materials scientists and engineers.

Book excerpt: On February 13, D Reactor sustained a bumpered enriched fuel element failure in process tube 3289. The element failed in the twenty-first position from the rear of the charge and was from lot KY-928-Q. Visual examination of the failed element indicated the failure mechanism to be cleavage of the uranium core. This conclusion was substantiated in part by the appearance of ''worm tracks'' in the aluminum jacket. The fuel failure was detected approximately three hours after the reactor had resumed operation from a minimum outage. Examination of reactor operation during the three-hour period revealed no evidence of a power transient which might account for the failure mechanism. As a result of a previous meeting between the management of Process Technology Subsection and Production Fuels subsection, verbal information was received from PFS which possibly explains the failure mechanism experienced with this lot. An agreement reached in the meeting was that PFS would provide Process Analysis with fuel lot canning history for evaluating continued irradiation of fuel failure lots with questionable quality integrity.
