Book excerpt: This thesis examined online teaching in the Ontario college sector in prelicensure collaborative baccalaureate nursing programs with the purpose of exploring and understanding best practice implementation and the nature and appropriateness of curriculum content for online delivery in nursing programs, as perceived by the faculty who have taught or are teaching courses online. The overarching question for this study was: What are the perceptions of participating faculty regarding the nature, challenges and strengths of teaching online course content in prelicensure collaborative baccalaureate nursing programs, and what are the implications for online course delivery? I used an exploratory-descriptive design and constructivist lens and pragmatic worldview with a mixed-methods data collection methodology to answer the research questions. The theoretical framework was rooted in constructivism as a teaching approach. My study included a representative sample of 13 English language Colleges in Ontario that offer prelicensure collaborative baccalaureate nursing programs. Participants were full-time and part-time nursing faculty and program coordinators in these programs. Data were collected through document analysis, an online questionnaire survey completed by 32 faculty (53.3%), and interviews with 16 nursing faculty. Based on the findings, I concluded that online education is useful in these nursing programs when the content and the semesters/years are appropriate, and necessary supports are in place. Content containing complex cognitive concepts was perceived as better suited to face-to-face settings, as was experiential learning such as relational practice and psychomotor skill mastery. A hybrid delivery format was the most preferred teaching environment. Faculty experienced challenges with developing higher level online discussions and having students collaborate. Faculty perceived that online teaching took much more time and there was a need for acknowledgement by leadership of this time in workload assignments. Though the colleges in this study are representative of the Ontario CAATs, the findings are not broadly generalizable. However, they will be of interest to other academic programs that wish to assess their own use of online learning, particularly in people and practice-based professional programs that prepare practitioners who work with vulnerable populations.

Book excerpt: The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine associate degree nursing faculty perceptions of factors that influence their career advisement of nursing students to matriculate in nursing baccalaureate degree completion programs. The study was guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1988) as expanded by Godin and Kok (1996). Associate degree nursing faculty perceptions of factors that influence their advisement were viewed through the lens of attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, personal norm and moral norm. An exploratory mixed method case study was conducted. A case state that had mandated articulation agreements between nursing educational levels was purposely chosen. An online survey, developed by the researcher, was sent to all full time nursing faculty from six of the seven associate degree nursing programs in the case state. Thirty-eight (67%) faculty provided quantitative data by completing the survey. Eight of these respondents provided further qualitative data by participating in telephone interviews. Five conclusions were drawn and recommendations were made for practice and continued research. The study concluded that advisement regarding educational continuation by associate degree nursing faculty is influenced by their belief that, given adequate support, and a period of recuperation, graduates are well prepared to educationally advance. In addition, the degree to which linkages had been established with baccalaureate completion programs, influenced advisement strategies by associate degree nursing faculty. Furthermore, faculty described a moral obligation to advise students based on a perceived relationship that was uniquely collegial. Recommendations for practice include development of intentional advisement strategies within associate degree programs that nurture professional excitement and ensure individualized plans for continuation. Stronger collaborative relationships with upper division programs are needed. Innovative advisement initiatives within the clinical arena merit further exploration. Research that focuses on student and baccalaureate faculty perceptions is needed to add to the discourse. Until a reliable method of tracking educational advancement in the case state can be established, evaluation of advisement effectiveness will remain anecdotal.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify which concepts and strategies faculty perceive as necessary for the development of critical thinking skills in a collaborative baccalaureate nursing program in Manitoba, Canada. With the advent of the collaborative baccalaureate nursing programs, the development of critical thinking abilities has become a major program goal. To reach this goal, faculty moving from traditional programs and those moving from generic programs to new ones, must first scrutinize their perceptions of critical thinking concepts and strategies. The population of the faculty from the hospital-based and the university-based programs was surveyed. An investigator-designed questionnaire was used to collect data. Factor analysis and correlation coefficients were used to test the validity and reliability of the instrument. As well, descriptive statistics and nonparametric analyses of variances were used to summarize and analyze data. Educators in the collaborative baccalaureate nursing programs in Manitoba suggested a rational-linear model for critical thinking balanced by a creative, process driven model. Teaching experience emerged as a significant factor in critical thinking. Previous clinical experience and education were not significant factors in faculty awareness of critical thinking research. Overall, results revealed an inconsistency among educators in their awareness of critical thinking research, especially where contextual and procedural knowledge were concerned. Further, failure of faculty to clearly distinguish among types of learning has major teaching implications. Although the source of faculty awareness cannot be ascertained from this study, the association between teaching experience and critical thinking bears closer scrutiny. Implications of this study, together with recommendations, are suggested for nursing administrators, faculty, board members of post-secondary institutions, and future researchers.

Collaborative testing, also called group testing or team testing provides opportunities for cooperative learning as students work in groups discussing test questions and choosing answers. Research identifies increased student learning, enhanced communication skills, and improved critical thinking with collaborative testing. However nursing education has been resistant to the use of collaborative testing. Nursing faculty participants describe perceptions of collaborative testing by means of an anonymous electronic questionnaire with open-ended questions. Nursing faculty perceptions of collaborative testing include: communication, student progression, NCLEX-RNĀ® performance, and limited use. Faculty perceive advantages of collaborative testing use include: low-performer advantage and learning. Faculty identify two disadvantages with collaborative testing: grade inflation and nonparticipation. Nursing faculty views of collaborative testing could promote understanding of low collaborative testing use in nursing education. The nursing faculty perceptions of collaborative testing revealed in this study present an initial look into nursing faculty views of collaborative testing. The identified nursing faculty perceptions provide a stepping-stone for future research into collaborative testing use in nursing education"--Abstract from thesis.
