My chief object in this, as in other cases, has been to furnish, as nearly as possible, a literal version of the original, regarding mere elegance of expression as of secondary importance in a scientific work. As much of Dr. Mfiller's German does not submit itself to such treatment very readily, I must beg his and the reader's indulgence for any imperfections arising from this cause. The curvature of the embryo upwards instead of downwards was met with by me as well as by Rathke in Idothea, and likewise in Cassidina, Philoscia, Tanais, and the Bopyridae,--indeed, I failed to find it in none of the Isopoda examined for this purpose. In Cassidina also the first larval skin without appendages is easily detected; it is destitute of the long tail, but is strongly bent in the egg, as in Ligia, and consequently cannot be mistaken for an "inner egg-membrane."

Book excerpt: Johann Friedrich Theodor Müller (1821-97), better known as Fritz Müller, and also as Müller-Desterro, was a German biologist who emigrated to southern Brazil in 1852 where he lived in and near the German community of Blumenau, Santa Catarina, remaining in Brazil for the rest of his life. There he studied the natural history of the Atlantic forest south of Sao Paulo, and was an early advocate of Darwinism. Müller spent a decade teaching at a college in Desterro and in 1876 was appointed as Travelling Naturalist to the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro. This post that gave him free range to study anything that interested him throughout the Itajai region, but when the new Brazilian Republic overthrew the liberal monarchy of Dom Pedro II in 1889 and decreed that all travelling naturalists were to be based in Rio de Janeiro, Müller refused point blank and was dismissed. As a strong supporter of Charles Darwin, in 1864 he wrote Für Darwin, arguing that Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection was correct, and that Brazilian crustaceans and their larvae could be affected by adaptations at any growth stage. Müller sent a copy to Darwin who had it privately translated for his own use. This later English translation by William Sweetland Dallas (1824-90), a British zoologist and curator of collections at the British Museum, which includes some additional material by Müller, was published in 1869 as Facts and Arguments for Darwin, the translation and its publication having been sponsored by Darwin himself. The book is illustrated thrughout.

Book excerpt: Book Excerpt: rate from behind into the branchial cavity. Now these crabs, which have become more or less estranged from the water, belong to the most different families--the Raninidae (Ranina), Eriphinae (Eriphia gonagra), Grapsoidae (Aratus, Sesarma, etc.), Ocypodidae (Gelasimus, Ocypoda), etc., and the separation of these families must doubtless be referred to a much earlier period than the habit of leaving the water displayed by some of their members. The arrangements connected with aerial respiration, therefore, could not be inherited from a common ancestor, and could scarcely be accordant in their construction. If there were any such accordance not referable to accidental resemblance among them, it would have to be laid in the scale as evidence against the correctness of Darwin's views. I shall show hereafter how in this case the result, far from presenting such contradictions, was rather in the most complete harmony with what might be predicted from Darwin's theory. (FIGURE 1. Book excerpt: Known for developing the concept of Müllerian mimicry, whereby poisonous species with a common predator display similar warning signals, the naturalist Johann Friedrich Theodor (Fritz) Müller (1821-97) spent most of his working life in Brazil. Having emigrated from Germany, owing partly to his radical atheism, he became a strong early supporter of Darwinism. Drawing on his studies of crustaceans, he originally published this work in German as Für Darwin (1864), and sent the great naturalist a copy. Müller became a regular correspondent, and Darwin supported the translation of Müller's work, firstly for his personal use and also in the published 1869 version that is reissued here, rendered into English by the naturalist William Sweetland Dallas (1824-90), with several updates by Müller. Using case studies of crustaceans to provide evidence for certain aspects of Darwinian theory, Müller draws up evolutionary classifications of the various species examined.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Morality of Nature A man now Of mature years, who began his reading when the epoch-making works Of Charles Robert Darwin were new books, has been privileged to share in a marvellous period Of human advancement. The new discoveries in those sciences which explore the prehistoric past of the world, and especially those which pertain to the progress Of life have promoted that central idea expressed by the word evolution from the status Of a theory to that Of an established principle - a necessary part of the educational equipment Of any thinking man. He who does not recognize evolution today is in the same class with those who do not believe that the earth is round. These are no longer questions to be argued, they are facts which are established in proofs so convincing that a little reading is all that is needed to make them clear. TO provide that little reading in regard to evolution is one of the purposes of this book. It is treated last because it is here only accessory to the chief arguments which precede it; but a reader who so desires may go over this explanation Of evolution first. It is broad and general rather than Of de tailed completeness. It will not satisfy the biologist any more than a landscape-painter's view of a forest scene would satisfy a botanist; but it has advantages nevertheless. The prime purpose of this work is the consideration Of Man as a participant in this great Evolution forward and upward. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Darwinism Stated by Darwin Himself: Characteristic Passages From the Writings of Charles Darwin This volume contains, of course, only an outline of the contents of the twelve volumes from which it is compiled, and for which it is by no means intended as a substitute. It will, on the contrary, we should hope, create an appetite which can be satisfied only by a care ful reading of the works themselves.
