The curvature of the embryo upwards instead of downwards was met with by me as well as by Rathke in Idothea, and likewise in Cassidina, Philoscia, Tanais, and the Bopyridae,--indeed, I failed to find it in none of the Isopoda examined for this purpose. In Cassidina also the first larval skin without appendages is easily detected; it is destitute of the long tail, but is strongly bent in the egg, as in Ligia, and consequently cannot be mistaken for an "inner egg-membrane."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Darwin were to examine the evidence today using modern science, would his conclusions be the same? Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, published over 150 years ago, is considered one of history’s most influential books and continues to serve as the foundation of thought for evolutionary biology. Since Darwin’s time, however, new fields of science have immerged that simply give us better answers to the question of origins. With a Ph.D. in cell and developmental biology from Harvard University, Dr. Nathaniel Jeanson is uniquely qualified to investigate what genetics reveal about origins. The Origins Puzzle Comes Together If the science surrounding origins were a puzzle, Darwin would have had fewer than 15% of the pieces to work with when he developed his theory of evolution. We now have a much greater percentage of the pieces because of modern scientific research. As Dr. Jeanson puts the new pieces together, a whole new picture emerges, giving us a testable, predictive model to explain the origin of species. A New Scientific Revolution Begins Darwin’s theory of evolution may be one of science’s “sacred cows,” but genetics research is proving it wrong. Changing an entrenched narrative, even if it’s wrong, is no easy task. Replacing Darwin asks you to consider the possibility that, based on genetics research, our origins are more easily understood in the context of . . . In the beginning . . . God, with the timeline found in the biblical narrative of Genesis. There is a better answer to the origins debate than what we have been led to believe. Let the revolution begin! About the Author Dr. Nathaniel Jeanson is a scientist and a scholar, trained in one of the most prestigious universities in the world. He earned his B.S. in Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and his PhD in Cell and Developmental Biology from Harvard University. As an undergraduate, he researched the molecular control of photosynthesis, and his graduate work involved investigating the molecular and physiological control of adult blood stem cells. His findings have been presented at regional and national conferences and have been published in peer-reviewed journals, such as Blood, Nature, and Cell. Since 2009, he has been actively researching the origin of species, both at the Institute for Creation Research and at Answers in Genesis.

Book excerpt: "Facts and Arguments for Darwin" is a seminal paintings authored with the aid of Fritz Müller, a 19th-century German biologist and naturalist. This book serves as a compelling and influential defense of Charles Darwin's concept of evolution through herbal selection. In the work, Müller meticulously provides a wealth of empirical proof and persuasive arguments in support of Darwin's innovative thoughts. He draws from his large studies of flora and animals, in particular in the wealthy biodiversity of Brazil, to provide concrete examples of ways herbal choice operates within the natural global. Müller's work now not best bolstered Darwin's principle but additionally brought particular insights. He made vast contributions to the expertise of coevolution and mutualism in ecosystems, dropping mild at the complex relationships between species. Through "Facts and Arguments for Darwin," Fritz Müller made a profound impact at the acceptance and dissemination of Darwin's evolutionary concept. His determination to empirical research and rigorous medical inquiry helped pave the manner for the broader attractiveness of Darwinism inside the scientific network. Today, Müller's contributions to biology and his advocacy for the ideas of herbal choice remain recognized and celebrated, making "Facts and Arguments for Darwin" an enduring testomony to the electricity of empirical science and the development of evolutionary concept.

Book excerpt: Johann Friedrich Theodor Müller (1821-97), better known as Fritz Müller, and also as Müller-Desterro, was a German biologist who emigrated to southern Brazil in 1852 where he lived in and near the German community of Blumenau, Santa Catarina, remaining in Brazil for the rest of his life. There he studied the natural history of the Atlantic forest south of Sao Paulo, and was an early advocate of Darwinism. Müller spent a decade teaching at a college in Desterro and in 1876 was appointed as Travelling Naturalist to the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro. This post that gave him free range to study anything that interested him throughout the Itajai region, but when the new Brazilian Republic overthrew the liberal monarchy of Dom Pedro II in 1889 and decreed that all travelling naturalists were to be based in Rio de Janeiro, Müller refused point blank and was dismissed. As a strong supporter of Charles Darwin, in 1864 he wrote Für Darwin, arguing that Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection was correct, and that Brazilian crustaceans and their larvae could be affected by adaptations at any growth stage. Müller sent a copy to Darwin who had it privately translated for his own use. This later English translation by William Sweetland Dallas (1824-90), a British zoologist and curator of collections at the British Museum, which includes some additional material by Müller, was published in 1869 as Facts and Arguments for Darwin, the translation and its publication having been sponsored by Darwin himself. The book is illustrated thrughout.

My chief object in this, as in other cases, has been to furnish, as nearly as possible, a literal version of the original, regarding mere elegance of expression as of secondary importance in a scientific work. As much of Dr. Mfiller's German does not submit itself to such treatment very readily, I must beg his and the reader's indulgence for any imperfections arising from this cause. Book excerpt: A creationist-turned-scientist demonstrates the facts of evolution and exposes Intelligent Design's real agenda Science is on the defensive. Half of Americans reject the theory of evolution and "Intelligent Design" campaigns are gaining ground. Classroom by classroom, creationism is overthrowing biology. In Why Darwin Matters, bestselling author Michael Shermer explains how the newest brand of creationism appeals to our predisposition to look for a designer behind life's complexity. Shermer decodes the scientific evidence to show that evolution is not "just a theory" and illustrates how it achieves the design of life through the bottom-up process of natural selection. Shermer, once an evangelical Christian and a creationist, argues that Intelligent Design proponents are invoking a combination of bad science, political antipathy, and flawed theology. He refutes their pseudoscientific arguments and then demonstrates why conservatives and people of faith can and should embrace evolution. He then appraises the evolutionary questions that truly need to be settled, building a powerful argument for science itself. Cutting the politics away from the facts, Why Darwin Matters is an incisive examination of what is at stake in the debate over evolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a book that is both groundbreaking and accessible, Daniel C. Dennett, whom Chet Raymo of The Boston Globe calls "one of the most provocative thinkers on the planet," focuses his unerringly logical mind on the theory of natural selection, showing how Darwin's great idea transforms and illuminates our traditional view of humanity's place in the universe. Dennett vividly describes the theory itself and then extends Darwin's vision with impeccable arguments to their often surprising conclusions, challenging the views of some of the most famous scientists of our day.
