Book excerpt: The U.S. Navy has maintained a continuous research, development and certification program in ULCB steels as a possible replacement for the HY and HSLA steels currently being used in ship construction. The overall aim of this program is to develop a high strength steel with improved weldability. Improved weldability could eliminate the requirement of preheating, (a necessary and costly step required to prevent weld metal cracking in HY steels). The strength of ULCB steel weldments can be correlated to the weld metals composition in a simple manner, however the toughness of the weldment seems to fluctuate in complex manner depending on the weld metal composition, weld power, and possibly the non-metallic inclusion size, type, number and distribution. This study attempted to correlate the embrittlement of ULCB/ULCB multipass TIG weldments to the given microstructure and to the type, size, number and distribution of the nonmetallic inclusions within the weldment. This work led to the following conclusions; (A) The embrittlement of ULCB weldments appeared to be the result of microscopic transgranular cracking, (B) There exists a need to design a process which can manufacture reproducible multipass weldments to facilitate testing, and (C) the type, size, number and distribution of the nonmetallic inclusions did not appear to be a factor in the toughness of the weldments investigated.

Book excerpt: Because of its reduced susceptibility to cracking, Ultra-Low Carbon Bainitic (ULCB) steel weld wire is being investigated as a consumable for Gas Tungsten Arc (GTA) and Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welding of Navy high strength (100 ksi) steels. In the present work, a candidate ULCB weld wire was investigated for GTA and GMA welding processes as a function of both welding power and cover gas. The strength and Charpy V-notch toughness of the resulting welds was investigated. It was found that the GTA weld using 100% argon cover gas had excellent toughness (well above Navy requirements), but the strength was at the minimum specification. The GMA welds using a cover gas of 95% argon - 5% CO2 (C5) showed the opposite trend in that they were well within the range of strength specifications, but their toughness was unsatisfactory. Chemical, mechanical and microstructural studies of these welds were performed. GMA welds using C5 cover gas had a higher weld metal.

Book excerpt: The factors that affect strength and toughness often ultra-low carbon steel weld samples (HSLA-80 and HSLA-100), welded using the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process and new ultra-low carbon consumable electrodes, were studied. The analysis was confined only to the weld metal, and the base metal was not considered. Analysis methods included optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Energy dispersive x-ray analysis was performed in the transmission electron microscope to analyze the chemical composition of non-metallic inclusions. The microstructure was found to be primarily granular ferrite with some primary ferrite, bainite, and martensite. Very little acicular ferrite was found (

Book excerpt: A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of weld cooling rate on the strength of autogenous GTAW deposited weld metal. The basic weld metal composition was based on a low carbon bainite metallurgical system. The weld metal yield strength goal was 130 ksi, needed to surpass the current HY-13O weld metal requirements. Vacuum Induction Melted (VIM) heats of steel were produced and processed into 3/4' thickness plates. The autogenous gas tungsten are welds (GTAW) on the parent steel plates were produced under two different heat input conditions. Tensile specimens were produced from the weldments; specimens from certain heats were subjected to gleeble thermal simulations of multi-pass welding conditions using the Gleeble 1500. All specimens were then evaluated for yield and ultimate tensile strength. From the data presented, it was found that the experimental compositions studied were less sensitive to cooling rate than current HY-130 welding consumables. The compositions tested approached the target yield strength of 130 ksi, but further work is necessary in this area.

Book excerpt: The fundamental factors affecting the impact toughness of four gas metal arc welds (GMAW) made on HSLA-100 base plate using a newly developed steel weld wire were studied. The weld metal analysis included chemistry, mechanical testing (hardness, CVN/FATT), as well as optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Studies of inclusion composition using energy dispersive x- ray (EDX), and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in the transmission electron microscope were also performed. It was found that increasing oxygen content of the weld metal (due to increased oxygen in the shielding gas) led to increased non-metallic inclusion size and volume fraction; which in turn, led to both decreasing strength and toughness. The strength was lowered because increasing oxygen in the shielding gas led to increased 'consumption' of strengthening alloys such as carbon, manganese and silicon. The toughness was compromised by the increasing size and number of oxide inclusions as these provide sites for void formation and subsequent fracture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to the Physical Metallurgy of Welding deals primarily with the welding of steels, which reflects the larger volume of literature on this material; however, many of the principles discussed can also be applied to other alloys. The book is divided into four chapters, in which the middle two deal with the microstructure and properties of the welded joint, such as the weld metal and the heat-affected zone. The first chapter is designed to provide a wider introduction to the many process variables of fusion welding, particularly those that may influence microstructure and properties, while the final chapter is concerned with cracking and fracture in welds. A comprehensive case study of the Alexander Kielland North Sea accommodation platform disaster is also discussed at the end. The text is written for undergraduate or postgraduate courses in departments of metallurgy, materials science, or engineering materials. The book will also serve as a useful revision text for engineers concerned with welding problems in industry.

Book excerpt: This is the third edition of the book, much expanded to include and incorporate important developments in the subject over the last fifteen years. The book represents a comprehensive treatise on all aspects of the bainite transformation, from the choreography of atoms during the phase change to length scales that are typical of engineering applications. The alloy design that emerges from this explains the role of solute additions, and the pernicious effects of impurities such as hydrogen. The picture presented is self-consistent and therefore is able to guide the reader on the exploitation of theory to the design of some of the most exciting steels, including the world’s first bulk nanostructured metal.
