Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The rapid decline of information technology majors poses a serious obstacle for the continued innovation and maintenance of the United States information technology infrastructure. The purpose of this study is to explore barriers to course progression of community college information technology Associate of Science degree students. While the research literature contains several studies about the reasons for the sharp decline among four year undergraduate information technology students very little research has examined community college Associate of Science degree student's progress toward the information technology degree. A quantitative study using transcript analysis will be conducted to find relationships between course preparation and degree progression among community college students. In addition, logistical regression will be used to determine factors influencing degree completion among information technology students.

The universe of students is confined to those who attended a four-year college at any time, thus including students who started out in other types of institutions, particularly community colleges.

Book excerpt: This study examined a first-time-in-college, associate of arts degree-seeking cohort comprised of 1,383 students at a large Florida public community college. Analysis was conducted on this cohort to determine how the emergent factors influenced course completion by students within the study data set. This examination may provide a better sense of demographic and course-related gateways and barriers to eventual degree completion, which can in turn offer a robust framework for further research or policy discussions.

People are seriously discussing whether the medieval ideal of the university as being excellent in all areas makes sense today, given the number of universities that we have in the world. Student fees are changing the orientation of students to the system. The high rate of non repayment of fees in the UK is provoking difficult questions about whether the current system of funding makes sense. There are disputes about the ratio of research to teaching, and further discussions about the international delivery of courses.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing national emphasis on college completion and affordability has prompted institutional efforts to focus on increasing efficient degree attainment within four-years. Traditional predictors of four-year graduation, Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) scores and high school grade point average (GPA) may disproportionately negatively impact the enrollment of African American and Latino students who are more likely to receive lower scores on these metrics. This study sought to identify quantifiable non-academic metrics that can assist to predict bachelor's degree attainment in four years for African Americans and Latinos who do not meet typical standardized testing and scoring predictors. A regression analysis was performed on CIRP Freshmen Survey data for University of Texas at Austin students first enrolled in fall 2008 to assess the strength of Freshmen Survey constructs and student-level financial aid to predict graduation within a four-year timeframe. The results showed that the combined consideration of select variables increased the accuracy of prediction by over seven percentage points; moreover, two factors, holding a positive self-concept and likelihood of college involvement, demonstrated statistical significance within the model. While there are several study limitations, the findings offer support for further exploration of a model for predicting four-year graduation that considers non-academic data elements.

Book excerpt: Increasing the rate of post-secondary attainment in the United States has become a national priority. Despite community colleges' role in the effort to increase degree attainment, evidence suggests that rates of degree completion of students enrolled in two-year institutions throughout the country are low. These low rates of attainment and persistence suggest that there is a need to know more about the forces that contribute to the academic outcomes of students enrolled in community colleges. This dissertation uses a case study design to understand the patterns of academic progress and degree attainment for scholarship recipients attending one community college in New Jersey and to determine the forces that contribute to and limit these students' academic progression toward associate's degree completion. This study describes NJ Stars students' progress along a series of intermediate milestones leading to associate degree completion and identifies those students at risk of not succeeding. This study also describes students' perspectives of services and interventions that are believed to support their academic progress toward associate's degree completion. This study complements existing research by examining the enrollment and persistence patterns of scholarship recipients enrolled in community colleges, identifying those high-achieving students who are at risk of not completing an associate's degree, and examining the forces that contribute to these enrollment patterns for these high-achieving students.

This book was released on 2021 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do so many students who enter an academic program in a community or technical college fail to complete any credential? One in five individuals who start their degree at a public, two-year institution completed that degree within three years (Snyder & Dillow, 2016). There are many reasons students fail to achieve success in higher education. One area of concern relating to student preparedness relates to the technology readiness of incoming students. "The perception that incoming college students, particularly business students, possess adequate computer skills has been made by many college administrators and professors" (Wallace & Clariana, 2005, pg. 142). This quantitative study is intended to analyze the impact technology literacy, as measured by an assessment process (i.e., technology literacy baseline process), had on incoming information technology (IT) program students when compared to incoming students who did not participate in the baseline process. This study was conducted using data from three Wisconsin technical colleges within a system containing 16 technical colleges. The three colleges utilized in this study have all recognized a lack of technology literacy in their incoming students based on the lack of success in basic technology courses. The students utilized for this study consisted solely of students entering an IT program. This study was designed to assess how a process designed to enhance technology literacy might impact the success of a college IT student. The study results do not support the assertion that a technology literacy baseline process addresses a shortfall in the technology literacy skills described in this study.
