Data were collected from 120 respondents randomly, using questionnaires. Simple descriptive tools such as frequencies, percentages and means were used to analyse the data. The result revealed that approximately 88% of the respondents are Muslims, and Gwari is the main tribe constituting 38% of the respondents. About 32% of the respondents have goat and 24% have sheep. Goat flock structure constituted 31% male and 69% female while sheep flock structure constituted 30% male and 70% female. Almost 90% of the respondents did not consume goat and sheep milk respectively. Unavailability and unawareness were the most important factors affecting the consumption of both goat and sheep milk. In general, the study revealed that goat and sheep milk consumption is not common in the area. Therefore, people should be enlightened about the nutritional values of both milks and they should be encouraged to consume the milks through education campaigns.

Goat's milk is vital in the management of allergies, gastro-intestinal disorders, CVD, osteoporosis, hypertension, colic, and antimicrobial protection. The objectionable odor produced by goats and the negative tradition beliefs demeans the advantages of goat milk consumption and the development of the sector, more so in developing countries. This review paper is focused at creating awareness of the nutritional values of goat's milk through highlighting the major components in the milk and its medicinal value using recent information and to recommend further investigation concerning nutritional and medicinal value of goat milk Goats are among the first animals to be domesticated by man over 10,000. The global increase in human population has led to a high demand of milk more in the tropical developing countries. The increased milk demand can be overcome by increasing ruminant such as goats. Goats can easily adapt to harsh climates making them an important component in the livestock industry more so to the poor small unit and marginal farmers.

Dairy goats play vital roles in social and economic welfare of rural societies in Tanzania. It serves as a means for capital accumulation, income generation, provision of animal protein and manure for fertilization of crop fields. In Kongwa district, for instance, the majority of rural and poor farmers keep dairy goats. Goats are preferred by rural poor people because of many desirable factors, among them being their tolerance to harsh environment, small size, short generation interval, low labour requirements and relatively low initial capital investment. By having four chambered stomachs, goats are able to utilize food materials like roughages and shrubs that are inedible by humans and convert them into edibles such as meat and milk. There is a vicious cycle of poverty in Kongwa District. Small farmers in the district have low income, caused by low production capacity and, hence, low savings that brings down their capacity to invest from various enterprises surrounding them. Several initiatives for development of stakeholders have tried to intervene the situation so as to break down the cycle by advocating and introducing improved dairy goats in the area, among them being Heifer Project International (HPI), Dodoma Micro-projects Programme (D.M.P.P) and World Vision Tanzania (WVT). The likely impacts include: • A long-term reduction in crop yields of 20–30 percent • Declining productivity of livestock, with adverse consequences on livelihoods • Increase in food imports (up to 40 percent for rice long term) • Worsening prospects for food security, particularly in the north and the southwest • A long-term decline in GDP of up to 4.5 percent The impacts may be worse if the economy diversifies away from agriculture more slowly than Vision 20:2020 anticipates, or if there is too little irrigation to counter the effects of rising temperatures on rain-fed yields. Equally important, investment decisions made on the basis of historical climate may be wrong: projects ignoring climate change might be either under- or over-designed, with losses (in terms of excess capital costs or foregone revenues) of 20–40 percent of initial capital in the case of irrigation or hydropower. Fortunately, there is a range of technological and management options that make sense, both to better handle current climate variability and to build resilience against a harsher climate: • By 2020 sustainable land management practices applied to 1 million hectares can offset most of the expected shorter-term yield decline; gradual extension of these practices to 50 percent of cropland, possibly combined with extra irrigation, can also counter-balance longer-term climate change impacts. • Climate-smart planning and design of irrigation and hydropower can more than halve the risks and related costs of making the wrong investment decision. The Federal Government could consider 10 short-term priority responses to build resilience to both current climate variability and future change through actions to improve climate governance across sectors, research and extension in agriculture, hydro-meteorological systems; integration of climate factors into the design of irrigation and hydropower projects, and mainstreaming climate concerns into priority programs, such as the Agriculture Transformation Agenda.
