Book Synopsis Codes and Automata by : Jean Berstel
Download or read book Codes and Automata written by Jean Berstel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major revision of Berstel and Perrin's classic Theory of Codes has been rewritten with a more modern focus and a much broader coverage of the subject. The concept of unambiguous automata, which is intimately linked with that of codes, now plays a significant role throughout the book, reflecting developments of the last 20 years. This is complemented by a discussion of the connection between codes and automata, and new material from the field of symbolic dynamics. The authors have also explored links with more practical applications, including data compression and cryptography. The treatment remains self-contained: there is background material on discrete mathematics, algebra and theoretical computer science. The wealth of exercises and examples make it ideal for self-study or courses. In summary, this is a comprehensive reference on the theory of variable-length codes and their relation to automata.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide a concise introduction to the mathematical theory of music, opening each chapter to the most recent research. Despite the complexity of some sections, the book can be read by a large audience. Many examples illustrate the concepts introduced. The book is divided into 9 chapters. In the first chapter, we tackle the question of the classification of chords and scales. Chapter 2 is a mathematical presentation of David Lewin's Generalized Interval Systems. Chapter 3 offers a new theory of diatonicity in equal-tempered universes. Chapter 4 presents the Neo-Riemannian theories based on the work of David Lewin, Richard Cohn and Henry Klumpenhouwer. Chapter 5 is devoted to the application of word combinatorics to music. Chapter 6 studies the rhythmic canons and the tessellation of the line. Chapter 7 is devoted to serial knots. Chapter 8 presents combinatorial designs and their applications to music. The last chapter, chapter 9, is dedicated to the study of tuning systems.

Book Synopsis International Tables for Crystallography, Volume B by : Uri Shmueli
Download or read book International Tables for Crystallography, Volume B written by Uri Shmueli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-27 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Tables for Crystallography are no longer available for purchase from Springer. For further information please contact Wiley Inc. (follow the link on the right hand side of this page). Volume B presents accounts of the numerous aspects of reciprocal space in crystallographic research. After an introductory chapter, Part 1 presents the reader with an account of structure-factor formalisms, an extensive treatment of the theory, algorithms and crystallographic applications of Fourier methods, and fundamental as well as advanced treatments of symmetry in reciprocal space. In Part 2, these general accounts are followed by detailed expositions of crystallographic statistics, the theory of direct methods, Patterson techniques, isomorphous replacement and anomalous scattering, and treatments of the role of electron microscopy and diffraction in crystal structure determination, including applications of direct methods to electron crystallography. Part 3 deals with applications of reciprocal space to molecular geometry and `best'-plane calculations, and contains a treatment of the principles of molecular graphics and modelling and their applications. A convergence-acceleration method of importance in the computation of approximate lattice sums is presented and the part concludes with a discussion of the Ewald method. Part 4 contains treatments of various diffuse-scattering phenomena arising from crystal dynamics, disorder and low dimensionality (liquid crystals), and an exposition of the underlying theories and/or experimental evidence. Polymer crystallography and reciprocal-space images of aperiodic crystals are also treated. Part 5 of the volume contains introductory treatments of the theory of the interaction of radiation with matter (dynamical theory) as applied to X-ray, electron and neutron diffraction techniques. The simplified trigonometric expressions for the structure factors in the 230 three-dimensional space groups, which appeared in Volume I of International Tables for X-ray Crystallography, are now given in Appendix 1.4.3 to Chapter 1.4 of this volume. Volume B is a vital addition to the library of scientists engaged in crystal structure determination, crystallographic computing, crystal physics and other fields of crystallographic research. Graduate students specializing in crystallography will find much material suitable for self-study and a rich source of references to the relevant literature.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Coding Theory by : Jurgen Bierbrauer
Download or read book Introduction to Coding Theory written by Jurgen Bierbrauer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although its roots lie in information theory, the applications of coding theory now extend to statistics, cryptography, and many areas of pure mathematics, as well as pervading large parts of theoretical computer science, from universal hashing to numerical integration. Introduction to Coding Theory introduces the theory of error-correcting codes in a thorough but gentle presentation. Part I begins with basic concepts, then builds from binary linear codes and Reed-Solomon codes to universal hashing, asymptotic results, and 3-dimensional codes. Part II emphasizes cyclic codes, applications, and the geometric desciption of codes. The author takes a unique, more natural approach to cyclic codes that is not couched in ring theory but by virtue of its simplicity, leads to far-reaching generalizations. Throughout the book, his discussions are packed with applications that include, but reach well beyond, data transmission, with each one introduced as soon as the codes are developed. Although designed as an undergraduate text with myriad exercises, lists of key topics, and chapter summaries, Introduction to Coding Theory explores enough advanced topics to hold equal value as a graduate text and professional reference. Mastering the contents of this book brings a complete understanding of the theory of cyclic codes, including their various applications and the Euclidean algorithm decoding of BCH-codes, and carries readers to the level of the most recent research.
