Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study constitutes an analysis of factionalism between rival groups in the dominant Congress Party in Maharashtra. The principal question examined is whether a politician's decision to oppose or 'rebel against' party authority is determined or can be predicted by certain characteristics of the individual concerned and his environment (e.g. the amount of land he owns, or the level of education, urbanization, prosperity, etc., of the area in which he operates politically). About 160 Congress Party members on four district councils were interviewed, and their answers provided the main source of information for the analysis. The legally defined jurisdiction of the district councils is rural Maharashtra, and the political factions examined thus operate in a rural milieu.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, regional parties in India win nearly as many votes as national parties. In Why Regional Parties?, Professor Adam Ziegfeld questions the conventional wisdom that regional parties in India are electorally successful because they harness popular grievances and benefit from strong regional identities. He draws on a wide range of quantitative and qualitative evidence from over eighteen months of field research to demonstrate that regional parties are, in actuality, successful because they represent expedient options for office-seeking politicians. By focusing on clientelism, coalition government, and state-level factional alignments, Ziegfeld explains why politicians in India find membership in a regional party appealing. He therefore accounts for the remarkable success of India's regional parties and, in doing so, outlines how party systems take root and evolve in democracies where patronage, vote buying, and machine politics are common.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on politics and society in India, this book explores new areas enmeshed in the complex social, economic and political processes in the country. Linking the structural characteristics with the broader sociological context, the book emphasizes the strong influence of sociological issues on politics, such as social milieu shaping and the articulation of the political in day-to-day events. Political events are connected with the ever-changing social, economic and political processes in order to provide an analytical framework to explain ‘peculiarities’ of Indian politics. Bidyut Chakrabarty argues that three major ideological influences of colonialism, nationalism and democracy have provided the foundational values of Indian politics. Structured thematically and chronologically, this work is a useful resource for students of political science, sociology and South Asian studies.

Factionalism, a growing phenomenon in Indian government and politics, has not only of late, assumed new dimensions but also infected almost all organizations including political parties, interest group, pressure groups, trade unions, voluntary association etc. It is quite disheartening and distressing to observe that even village community and its government and politics are largely as well as deeply affected and afflicted by this all-pervading evil that has spread its tentacles to eat away the very vitals of the Indian rural society. It has assumed so much of importance and significance that it has attracted the attention of social scientists, policy-makers and administrators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book Is One Of The Few Full-Length Studies Of The Members Of A Legislative Assembly. It Deals With The Members Of The Iv Legislative Assembly In Rajasthan, One Of The 22 States Of The Indian Union, Which, Though With A Feudal Background, Has Been Struggling Its Way To A Modern Democratic Order. The Data For The Study Was Collected During 1970-71 And Covers 130 Of The 184 Members Of The Legislative Assembly. The Study Aims At Finding Out The Role Of The Legislative Elite In The Democratizing Process. The Specific Foci Of Enquiry Are The Socio-Economic And Political Background Of The Legislators, Their Political Values And Orientation And Their Role Images. What Distinguishes This Study From Other Studies Of The Legislative Elite Is An Effort To Investigate Intothe Pattern Of Constituency Linkage Which The Legislative Elite Develop In Their Own Enlightened Self-Interest. The Key Finding Of The Study Is That The Constituents Look Upon Their Representatives Primarily As Agents Of Local Development Which In Turn Becomes The Basis Of Their Legitimacy And Re-Election. The Author Has Also Tried To Probe Into The Patterns Of Socialisation That Have Gone Into The Making Of The Political Mind Of The Legislators In The State. The Study Brings Out That Till The Iv Assembly At Least National Movement Had Been One Of The Most Important Socialising Agents, Though Some Departures From This Trend Have Also Been Noticeable, Which Have A Portent For The Future. Altogether The Prsent Study, Which Is A Revised Version Of Authbor'S Ph.D. Thesis, Provides Meaningful Insights Into The Structure Of The Political Elite And The Political Process In The State. It Should Serve As A Useful Basis For Future Studies Particularly For Comparative Purposes.
