This book was released on 2006-08-17 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An extremely good writer, [Ayers] is well worth reading . . . on the South and Southern history.”—Stephen Sears, Boston Globe The Southern past has proven to be fertile ground for great works of history. Peculiarities of tragic proportions—a system of slavery flourishing in a land of freedom, secession and Civil War tearing at a federal Union, deep poverty persisting in a nation of fast-paced development—have fed the imaginations of some of our most accomplished historians. Foremost in their ranks today is Edward L. Ayers, author of the award-winning and ongoing study of the Civil War in the heart of America, the Valley of the Shadow Project. In wide-ranging essays on the Civil War, the New South, and the twentieth-century South, Ayers turns over the rich soil of Southern life to explore the sources of the nation's and his own history. The title essay, original here, distills his vast research and offers a fresh perspective on the nation's central historical event.

Book Synopsis Myths of the Civil War by : Scott Hippensteel
Download or read book Myths of the Civil War written by Scott Hippensteel and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spirit of Robert Adair’s cult classic The Physics of Baseball, here is a book that tackles the long-cherished myths of Civil War history—and ultimately shatters them, based on physics and mathematics. At what range was a Civil War sniper lethal? Did bullets ever “rain like hail”? Could one ever step across a battlefield by stepping only on bodies and never hard ground? How effective were Civil War muskets and rifles? How accurate are photographs and paintings? In this genre-bending work of history, Scott Hippensteel puts the tropes of Civil War history under the microscope and says, “Wait a minute!” Combining science and history, Hippensteel reexamines much that we hold dear about the Civil War and convincingly argues that memoirs and histories have gotten it wrong. This is a work of history and science for our era of “fake news”—and for well beyond. Readers will never look at the Civil War the same way again.

Book Synopsis Causes of the Civil War by : Philip Leigh
Download or read book Causes of the Civil War written by Philip Leigh and published by Shotwell Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2020-09-26 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE PRESENTLY DOMINANT NARRATIVE about Civil War causes is the work of historians obsessed with social activism instead o historical facts. They point to the 13th, 14th and 15th postbellum amendments as proof that the North was fighting to provide slaves with an honorable freedom but deny that the increase in tariffs from 19% before the war before to an average of 45% for fifty years thereafter reflected a Northern war aim. They hold Southern secession responsible for the war but fail to teach that the Northeastern states threatened to secede five times between 1789 and 1850. They also decline to note that Southern secession need not have led to war. Southerners had no purpose to overthrow the Washington government, they merely wanted a government of their own. Northerners could have evacuated Fort Sumter and let the first seven cotton states depart in peace thereby avoiding the war. Modern historians normally focus on the reasons the cotton states seceded instead of examining the economic reasons Northerner chose to militarily coerce them back into the Union thereby inaugurating civil war. The Republican Party could have stopped the spread of slavery peacefully by endorsing Popular Sovereignty during the 1860 presidential election. After Kansas used it to reject slavery in an 1858 local-option vote, nearly every politico realized that the doctrine would quarantine slavery in the South. If Popular Sovereignty could not make a slave state out of Kansas, it could not do it in any of the remaining 1860 Federal territories. Republicans rejected the doctrine simply to survive as an independent Party because Lincoln's two chief opposing presidential candidates supported it. Beyond what Poplar Sovereignty would have gained, the Republican ban added nothing except to inflame the sectional passions that led to civil war. * * * * * "Philip Leigh does not hesitate to challenge what Voltaire called 'The propaganda of the victorious. This work is not to be missed by any who are interested in the truth." - H. V. Traywick Author: Empire of the Owls and Virginia Iliad "Philip Leigh's new book gives readers hard, historical, economic facts showing that the causes of the American Civil War date back decades and were multi-layered. Read this book if you want a full understanding of what the war was really about." - Clint Johnson Author: Tin Cans and Greyhounds and The Politically Incorrect Guide to the South "For two generations mainline historians have taught that Southerners committed treason by seceding and virtuous Northerners invaded the South to abolish slavery. For many of America's elite this so-called truth has enabled them to support, or stand silent, as Confederate memorials are vandalized or removed. Phil Leigh's new book shows that the thesis is simply untrue." - Don Livingston, Ph.D. Author: Hume's Philosophy of Common Life and Philosophical Melancholy and Delirium: Hume's Pathology of Philosophy
Download or read book Gettysburg written by Newt Gingrich and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An action-packed and painstakingly researched masterwork by Newt Gingrich and William R. Forstchen, Gettysburg stands as the first book in a series to tell the story of how history could have unfolded, how a victory for Lee would have changed the destiny of the nation forever. This is a novel of true heroism and glory in America's most trying hour. The Civil War is the American Iliad. Lincoln, Stonewall Jackson, Grant, and Lee still stand as heroic ideals, as stirring to our national memory as were the legendary Achilles and Hector to the world of the ancient Greeks. Within the story of our Iliad one battle stands forth above all others: Gettysburg. Millions visit Gettysburg each year to walk the fields and hills where Joshua Chamberlain made his legendary stand and Pickett went down to a defeat which doomed a nation, but in defeat forever became a symbol of the heroic Lost Cause. As the years passed, and the scars healed, the debate, rather than drifting away has intensified. It is the battle which has become the great "what if," of American history and the center of a dreamscape where Confederate banners finally do crown the heights above the town. The year is 1863, and General Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia are poised to attack the North and claim the victory that would end the brutal conflict. But Lee's Gettysburg campaign ended in failure, ultimately deciding the outcome of the war. Launching his men into a vast sweeping operation, of which the town of Gettysburg is but one small part of the plan, General Lee, acting as he did at Chancellorsville, Second Manassas, and Antietam, displays the audacity of old. He knows he has but one more good chance to gain ultimate victory, for after two years of war the relentless power of an industrialized north is wearing the South down. Lee's lieutenants and the men in the ranks, imbued with this renewed spirit of the offensive embark on the Gettysburg Campaign that many dream "should have been." The soldiers in the line, Yank and Reb, knew as well that this would be the great challenge, the decisive moment that would decided whether a nation would die, or be created, and both sides were ready, willing to lay down their lives for their Cause.

Book Synopsis It Wasn't About Slavery by : Samuel W. Mitcham
Download or read book It Wasn't About Slavery written by Samuel W. Mitcham and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lie of the Civil War If you think the Civil War was fought to end slavery, you’ve been duped. In fact, as distinguished military historian Samuel Mitcham argues in his provocative new book, It Wasn’t About Slavery, no political party advocated freeing the slaves in the presidential election of 1860. The Republican Party platform opposed the expansion of slavery to the western states, but it did not embrace abolition. The real cause of the war was a dispute over money and self-determination. Before the Civil War, the South financed most of the federal government—because the federal government was funded by tariffs, which were paid disproportionately by the agricultural South that imported manufactured goods. Yet, most federal government spending and subsidies benefited the North. The South wanted a more limited federal government and lower tariffs—the ideals of Thomas Jefferson—and when the South could not get that, it opted for independence. Lincoln was unprepared when the Southern states seceded, and force was the only way to bring them—and their tariff money—back. That was the real cause of the war. A well-documented and compelling read by a master historian, It Wasn’t About Slavery will change the way you think about Abraham Lincoln, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the cause and legacy of America’s momentous Civil War.
