Data were collected in two phases. In phase one, a case study of a high school ice hockey program recognised for focusing on youth development was conducted. One article was written, documenting the design of the program and its impact on student development. Results indicate that participants believed students were learning a wide range of life skills and values but that administrators and coaches faced many challenges in sustaining the program. In phase two, interviews were conducted with model high school coaches and their athletes and three articles were written (articles two, three, and four). The second article examines how model high school coaches teach students life skills and how to transfer these skills to other life domains. Results demonstrate that the model coaches prioritised development and had specifically designed strategies to help students learn and transfer life skills. The third article investigates how model high school coaches learn to facilitate positive youth development through sport. Results indicate that these coaches were lifelong learners who took advantage of learning situations in order to refine their skills and use sport as a tool for development. The fourth article examines the characteristics athletes prefer in high school coaches. Results indicate that most athletes prefer coaches who are supportive, knowledgeable, good motivators, and prioritise athlete development. Based on the results of the two phases of data collection, an article was written with the objective of providing coaches with strategies on how to facilitate positive youth development through sport. Strategies consist of: (a) developing a coaching philosophy, (b) developing relationships with athletes, (c) having developmental strategies, (d) making athletes practice life skills, and (e) teaching athletes about the transferability of life skills.

Book excerpt: Youth sport is considered an ideal context to foster positive youth development (PYD) through an asset-building approach (Holt et al., 2017; Larson, 2000), yet researchers have questioned whether the pursuit of performance success within elite youth sport may hinder the pursuit of PYD (e.g., Fraser-Thomas & Strachan, 2015). Given extensive research underlining the important role of coaches in fostering PYD through sport (Holt et al., 2017 for review), research is needed to understand the experiences of elite youth sport coaches facilitating PYD within a performance-oriented environment (Fraser-Thomas & Strachan, 2015). Guided by Holt and colleagues (2017) model of PYD through sport, the purpose of this dissertation was to examine the role of the coach in fostering PYD within an elite youth sport context. In manuscript one, I drew upon autoethnographic research methods (Ellis & Bochner, 2000) to explore my experience coaching a Canadian elite minor hockey team, using a PYD approach to foster personal development and performance success. In manuscript two I used similar methodologies to examine my interactions with parents, and how these potentially fostered athlete PYD. Manuscript three explored coaches pursuit of PYD within elite youth sport more broadly through ethnographic research methods (Patton, 2005), as I acted as an assistant coach to four purposefully sampled teams for the duration of one season. Manuscript four examined the content of Hockey Canadas (2016) High Performance 1 coach education manual with specific attention to interpersonal coaching approaches that facilitate PYD. Collectively, findings indicate elite youth sport coaches were able to foster a PYD climate within a performance-oriented environment; however I/they experienced challenges and underlying tensions, particularly in relation to the coach-parent relationship, within a performance-oriented environment. Findings raise questions regarding the overall sport structure of AAA minor hockey in Canada, given the constant tension for coaches striving to attain performance success while balancing the goal of athletes PYD. My shared overall insights of my experiences may evoke other elite youth coaches to reflect on their coaching experiences and practices regarding fostering PYD through sport. Findings are further discussed in terms of contributions to the PYD literature, and future research directions.

Book excerpt: Research in the field of developmental psychology has highlighted the importance of structured activities in providing positive experiences and outcomes for youth. In particular, youth participation in organized sport has been linked to the development of physical, motor, and psychosocial skills. Although these outcomes have been discussed in the sport psychology literature, it is not clear how positive youth development may be facilitated through sport. An ecological approach was used to examine developmental processes, personal characteristics, contextual factors, and time elements that may be linked to youth sport participation and positive development. Study 1 used a quantitative methodology to examine the relationship between developmental asset possession and youth sport outcomes such as burnout and enjoyment. Of the eight asset categories examined, four emerged as significant predictors of burnout and/or enjoyment. Specifically, positive identity, support, and empowerment were linked to burnout and positive identity, empowerment, and social competencies were linked to enjoyment. Study 2 also utilized a quantitative methodology in order to investigate differences between a group of youth sport "specializers" and a group of youth sport "samplers". Outcomes including burnout, enjoyment, and developmental assets were compared as well as experiences in sport. The groups did not differ in developmental asset possession or in sources of enjoyment. However, "samplers" reported more experiences integrating sport, family, and community whereas "specializers" were more likely to have more experiences with diverse peer groups. The "specializers" also reported higher levels of burnout (i.e., exhaustion) relating to their sport participation. Study 3 examined the development of positive youth within a sport specialization context. Through the use of interviews with elite youth sport coaches and practice observations, four characteristics (i.e., appropriate training structure, opportunities for personal and social development, opportunities for physical and motor skill development, and the presence of supportive interactions) were developed outlining how elite sport settings can enable the development of positive youth. This line of research highlighted the key role of the sport experience in promoting positive youth development. If youth sport programs are delivered with an emphasis on skill development in conjunction with the growth of key assets and an appropriate contextual experience, young people have the potential to emerge as healthy, secure, and positive citizens who feel valued and invested within their homes and communities.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Research in the area of Positive Youth Development through Sport has shown that, under the right circumstances, participation in sport can have a beneficial influence on the development of youth (Holt & Neely, 2011). Although much research has examined youth sport programs designed to foster positive development, comparatively little research has focused on understanding positive development in skill-focused youth sport settings. Using a methodological approach that draws from the ontological theories of Carnap (1950) and the epistemological theories of Habermas (1971), the purpose of the present study was to use an action research approach to gain insight into the nature of PYDS in a skill-focused youth sport context. Participants in the present study were stakeholders in a high level U16 boys soccer team in Western Massachusetts. Data were collected using a combination of Collaborative Ratings Scales, interviews, reflection worksheets, and researcher journaling throughout cycles of planning, action, and reflection as the youth sport stakeholders worked toward their goals. Analysis of the data corresponded to the technical, practical, and emancipatory domains of human interest (Habermas, 1971), with a focus on three questions: (a) Did stakeholders increase effectiveness and efficiency in their goal areas? (b) How did stakeholders describe their experiences working toward each goal area? (c) How did stakeholders describe restrictive conditions of their experience and did changes in meaning occur to allow them to move past these restrictions? Findings provided some evidence that stakeholders made progress towards their season goals, with comfort, relationships, leadership, and personality emerging as important themes of their experience in each of the four goal areas. Implications for PYDS and methodological implications of these findings are discussed.
