Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since April 2016, CTA implemented the “Capitalizing on Experiences for Greater Impact in Rural Development” project – working together with FAO and IICA, and with the financial support of IFAD. During these three years, this project worked with many organizations in different parts of the world. Its purpose was to empower these organizations with the tools and the skills needed to identify practices which can be brought to scale, to describe and analyze them in detail, and to share the lessons they teach. More specifically, this project aimed to facilitate the adoption of an experience capitalization process in rural development initiatives. This guidebook is meant to help facilitators. It builds on the many interesting resources which are already available, but it builds more specifically on the experience accumulated by the project, and on the lessons and insights drawn by all those who were involved in it – both as facilitators and as participants. It is their work which has shown what works and what can be presented as a recommendation that others can follow and adapt.

Book excerpt: One of the project’s last activities was to organise a meeting with those who took an active role as facilitators, and who helped guide the series of capitalization processes which the project supported in different parts of the world. This was planned to complement the online discussions that had been going on between them – and together discuss the conditions, requirements or the factors underpinning an effective facilitation process. The meeting helpedvalidate many of the issues identified during the preparation, implementation and evaluation of the different capitalization processes in which manypersons were involved. It also helped identify what is needed now to support the processes already initiated and to be completed, or to start new initiatives. The narratives included in this publication served as inputs for the discussions at the meeting. Written by those who were actively and directly involved in the different steps of the project, they show the main issues they faced during the training workshops and also in the field, and the main lessons they drew as participants, facilitators or as experience capitalization “champions”. Although based on concrete cases, the fears, observations or ideas included in each one of these articles will be easily recognised by those playing a similar role. They are therefore a good complement to the facilitator’s guidebook recently published by CTA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cases captured in this booklet show the steps taken in many of these projects and organisations to support and ensure the adoption of an experience capitalization approach. Working together with their colleagues, those who joined the CTA workshops have become active “champions”: organising their own training sessions, they shared information in different ways, and have shown how others can benefit from the capitalization process. They have helped to create the conditions for experience capitalization to be more widely adopted by their organisations. As a result, there are many new capitalization processes going on, and many more will be taking place in the future – effectively underpinning more accountable and efficient projects in the future and greater progress in rural development.

Book excerpt: The GreeNTD is based on a socio-ecological territorial development methodology that supports a wide stakeholder’s engagement in seeking progressive territorial consensus through a holistic, bottom-up and negotiated vision. The final objective is to get an agreed, socially legitimate and sustainable use and management of natural resources whilst safeguarding the ecosystem, current and future. The proposed methods and tools are thought to facilitate the potential users in the implementation of the approach and to facilitate the application of the agreement. The toolkit presents a set of tools to be used in various steps of the territorial development interventions within the GreeNTD framework, providing practical examples to support their implementation. It is intended to facilitate the implementation of a "learning by doing" process, designed by a progressive adoption of the proposed tools, depending on the context, resources and the level of complexity to deal. The toolkit does not intend to provide narrow steps to be followed as a recipe; it rather proposes a set of various methodological options and examples of tools that can support the process, related to its various key aspects.

Book excerpt: The stories in this booklet come from different teams working in Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia, the Philippines, Laos and India, with all of them addressing the main challenges that farmers and the rural communities in this region face. A different context, which provides different challenges to the ones CTA has been working with. These stories, however, show many lessons that are equally applicable in the ACP countries with which we are more familiar. There is an equal need to support indigenous communities, to strengthen local groups, or to recognise the enormous contribution that female farmers make, and to work together with those who are trying innovative and successful approaches. It is equally necessary to carry out a detailed analysis of the context in which these initiatives take place, and to encourage all stakeholders to take part in it.

Book excerpt: This booklet shows the results of the first “cluster” put together by the Experience Capitalization project implemented by CTA in different parts of the world – a group made up of representatives of some of the farmer organisations working in East Africa: the Uganda National Farmers Federation, the Kenya National Farmers Federation, the Kenya Livestock Producers Association, MVIWATA in Tanzania, and also of the East Africa Farmers Federation. Not knowing much about “experience capitalization”, they came together for a first workshop in Nairobi at the end of 2016 – and they all started their own capitalization process. CTA’s objective was that participants would not just discuss the concepts and principles behind the capitalization approach, but that they would work together with their colleagues back home and complete the process within a few months. What follows are the first results of these processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the concepts most commonly discussed in value-chain development projects is that of the 4Ps: the Public, Private, Producer Partnerships. This refers to the strong cooperation arrangements between a government, business agents and smallscale producers, who agree to work together to reach a common goal or carry out a specific task while jointly assuming risks and responsibilities, and sharing benefits, resources and competencies. A 4P arrangement ideally serves multiple development objectives. For example, it can be a mechanism to include a specific target group in value chains led by private companies. Private investment can also facilitate access to markets, technical assistance, knowledge, technology and capital. Finally, intensification of production and development of value chains can generate significant employment opportunities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflict between work and family has been a topic of discussion since the beginning of the women's movement, but recent changes in family structures and workforce demographics have made it clear that the issues impact both women and men. While employers and policymakers struggle to navigate this new terrain, critics charge that the research sector, too, has been slow to respond. Gender and the Work-Family Experience puts multiple faces – male as well as female – on complex realities with interdisciplinary and cross-cultural awareness and research-based insight. Besides reviewing the state of gender roles as they affect home and career, this in-depth reference examines and compares how women and men experience work-family conflict and its consequences for relationships at home as well as outcomes on the job. Topics as wide-ranging as gendered occupations, gender and shiftwork, heteronormative assumptions, the myth of the ideal worker, and gendered aspects of work-family guilt reflect significant changes in society and reveal important implications for both research and policy. Also included in the coverage: Gender ideology and work-family plans of the next generation Gender, poverty, and the work-family interface The double jeopardy effect: the importance of gender and race in work-family research When work intrudes upon employees’ personal time: does gender matter? Work-family equality: the importance of a level playing field at home Women in STEM: family-related challenges and initiatives Family-friendly organizational policies, practices, and benefits through the gender lens Geared toward work-family and gender researchers as well as students and educators in a variety of fields, Gender and the Work-Family Experience will find interested readers in the fields of industrial and organizational psychology, business management, social psychology, sociology, gender studies, women’s studies, and public policy, among others..

Book excerpt: In initiating and reinforcing a systematic approach to learning from development experiences, CTA invited a number of organisations working in remote rural parts of Nepal, Bhutan, Indonesia and India. The idea was to introduce Experience Capitalisation as a particularly effective methodology for this purpose. Participating organisations were expected to use this knowledge to document and analyse their own work over a period of 3-4 months with support from colleagues, partners and the communities they were supporting. This resulted in a set of written documents aimed at sharing findings with wider audiences. The finest twelve of these find a place in this collection.

Book excerpt: For 60 years the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) has been advancing research in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This book looks into both past experiences and future perspectives using the core of IFIP's competence, its Technical Committees (TCs) and Working Groups (WGs). Soon after IFIP was founded, it established TCs and related WGs to foster the exchange and development of the scientific and technical aspects of information processing. IFIP TCs are as diverse as the different aspects of information processing, but they share the following aims: To establish and maintain liaison with national and international organizations with allied interests and to foster cooperative action, collaborative research, and information exchange. To identify subjects and priorities for research, to stimulate theoretical work on fundamental issues, and to foster fundamental research which will underpin future development. To provide a forum for professionals with a view to promoting the study, collection, exchange, and dissemination of ideas, information, and research findings and thereby to promote the state of the art. To seek and use the most effective ways of disseminating information about IFIP’s work including the organization of conferences, workshops and symposia and the timely production of relevant publications. To have special regard for the needs of developing countries and to seek practicable ways of working with them. To encourage communication and to promote interaction between users, practitioners, and researchers. To foster interdisciplinary work and – in particular – to collaborate with other Technical Committees and Working Groups. The 17 contributions in this book describe the scientific, technical, and further work in TCs and WGs and in many cases also assess the future consequences of the work’s results. These contributions explore the developments of IFIP and the ICT profession now and over the next 60 years. The contributions are arranged per TC and conclude with the chapter on the IFIP code of ethics and conduct.

Book excerpt: “Intelligent systems must perform in order to be in demand. ” Intelligent systems technology is being applied steadily in solving many day-to-day problems. Each year the list of real-world deployed applications that inconspicuously host the results of research in the area grows considerably. These applications are having a significant impact in industrial operations, in financial circles, in transportation, in education, in medicine, in consumer products, in games and elsewhere. A set of selected papers presented at the seventeenth in the series of conferences on Industrial and Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems (IEA/AIE 2004), sponsored by the International Society of Applied Intelligence, is offered in this manuscript. These papers highlight novel applications of the technology and show how new research could lead to new and innovative applications. We hope that you find these papers to be educational, useful in your own research, and stimulating. In addition, we have introduced some special sessions to emphasize a few areas of artificial intelligence (AI) that are either relatively new, have received considerable attention recently or perhaps have not yet been represented well. To this end, we have included special sessions on e-learning, bioinformatics, and human-robot interaction (HRI) to complement the usual offerings in areas such as data mining, machine learning, intelligent systems, neural networks, genetic algorithms, autonomous agents, natural language processing, intelligent user interfaces, evolutionary computing, fuzzy logic, computer vision and image processing, reasoning, heuristic search, security, Internet applications, constraint satisfaction problems, design, and expert systems.
