Book excerpt: Description: The series entitled Facets of Recent Indian Philosophy is a collection of addresses delivered by eminent philosophers as General Presidents in the annual sessions of the Indian Philosophical Congress. The need to collect them was felt by many. Most of them could be obtained. Excluding a few, they have been arranged thematically in three volumes containing seven addresses each: Volume 1: The Metaphysics of the Spirit; Volume 2: Indian Philosophy and History; Volume 3: Problems of Indian Philosophy. The addresses included in Volume 3 deal with some of the major and perennial problems of philosophy in particular. Thus, problems of ego, fear, sorrow, violence, peace, freedom, time and the like, have received focal attention. Some of the addresses discuss temporal and social issues, such as unity in diversity, dogmatism, ecology and the malady of the age. Viewed together, they evince a philosopher's concern with eternal, as well as immediate, problems and their eagerness to solve them by making sincere and effective efforts. These volumes will undoubtedly prove to be very useful to researches and students of contemporary Indian philosophy as they give a good idea of the direction in which twentieth-century Indian philosophy has been moving since the mid-thirties.

Book excerpt: Description: The series entitled Facets of Recent Indian Philosophy is a collection of addresses delivered by eminent philosophers as General Presidents in the annual sessions of the Indian Philosophical Congress. Initially conceived to be published in three volumes, and the idea having been accomplished, the proposition transgressed itself and this fourth volume symbolises the transcending finale of the venture. Now all the available Presidential addresses till date have been included in the series. They have been arranged thematically as below: Volume 1: The Metaphysics of the Spirit; Volume 2: Indian Philosophy and History; Volume 3: Problems of Indian Philosophy; Volume 4: The Philosophy of Life. The first three volumes contain seventeen addresses each. The last one has twenty-one entries, including a couple of addresses of Sectional Presidents, one Endowment Lecture and one paper submitted to a section. The addresses included in these deal with some of the major and perennial problems of philosophy in general and of Indian philosophy in particular. Book Synopsis Indian Philosophy in English by : Nalini Bhushan
Download or read book Indian Philosophy in English written by Nalini Bhushan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book publishes, for the first time in decades, and in many cases, for the first time in a readily accessible edition, English language philosophical literature written in India during the period of British rule. Bhushan's and Garfield's own essays on the work of this period contextualize the philosophical essays collected and connect them to broader intellectual, artistic and political movements in India. This volume yields a new understanding of cosmopolitan consciousness in a colonial context, of the intellectual agency of colonial academic communities, and of the roots of cross-cultural philosophy as it is practiced today. It transforms the canon of global philosophy, presenting for the first time a usable collection and a systematic study of Anglophone Indian philosophy. Many historians of Indian philosophy see a radical disjuncture between traditional Indian philosophy and contemporary Indian academic philosophy that has abandoned its roots amid globalization. This volume provides a corrective to this common view. The literature collected and studied in this volume is at the same time Indian and global, demonstrating that the colonial Indian philosophical communities were important participants in global dialogues, and revealing the roots of contemporary Indian philosophical thought. The scholars whose work is published here will be unfamiliar to many contemporary philosophers. But the reader will discover that their work is creative, exciting, and original, and introduces distinctive voices into global conversations. These were the teachers who trained the best Indian scholars of the post-Independence period. They engaged creatively both with the classical Indian tradition and with the philosophy of the West, forging a new Indian philosophical idiom to which contemporary Indian and global philosophy are indebted.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Indian Philosophy by : Jonardon Ganeri
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Indian Philosophy written by Jonardon Ganeri and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 841 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Indian Philosophy tells the story of philosophy in India through a series of exceptional individual acts of philosophical virtuosity. It brings together forty leading international scholars to record the diverse figures, movements, and approaches that constitute philosophy in the geographical region of the Indian subcontinent, a region sometimes nowadays designated South Asia. The volume aims to be ecumenical, drawing from different locales, languages, and literary cultures, inclusive of dissenters, heretics and sceptics, of philosophical ideas in thinkers not themselves primarily philosophers, and reflecting India's north-western borders with the Persianate and Arabic worlds, its north-eastern boundaries with Tibet, Nepal, Ladakh and China, as well as the southern and eastern shores that afford maritime links with the lands of Theravda Buddhism. Indian Philosophy has been written in many languages, including Pali, Prakrit, Sanskrit, Malayalam, Urdu, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Persian, Kannada, Punjabi, Hindi, Tibetan, Arabic and Assamese. From the time of the British colonial occupation, it has also been written in English. It spans philosophy of law, logic, politics, environment and society, but is most strongly associated with wide-ranging discussions in the philosophy of mind and language, epistemology and metaphysics (how we know and what is there to be known), ethics, metaethics and aesthetics, and metaphilosophy. The reach of Indian ideas has been vast, both historically and geographically, and it has been and continues to be a major influence in world philosophy. In the breadth as well as the depth of its philosophical investigation, in the sheer bulk of surviving texts and in the diffusion of its ideas, the philosophical heritage of India easily stands comparison with that of China, Greece, the Latin west, or the Islamic world.
Book Synopsis Indian Epistemology and Metaphysics by : Joerg Tuske
Download or read book Indian Epistemology and Metaphysics written by Joerg Tuske and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-27 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian Epistemology and Metaphysics introduces the reader to new perspectives on Indian philosophy based on philological research within the last twenty years. Concentrating on topics such as perception, inference, skepticism, consciousness, self, mind, and universals, some of the most notable scholars working in classical Indian philosophy today examine core epistemological and metaphysical issues. Philosophical theories and arguments from a comprehensive range of Indian philosophical traditions (including the Nyaya, Mimamsa, Saiva, Vedanta, Samkhya, Jain, Buddhist, materialist and skeptical traditions, as well as some 20th century thought) are covered. The contributors to this volume approach the topics from both a philosophical and a philological perspective. They demonstrate the importance of the subject matter for an understanding of Indian thought in general and they highlight its wider philosophical significance. By developing an appreciation of classical Indian philosophy in its own terms, set against the background of its unique assumptions and historical and cultural development, Indian Epistemology and Metaphysics is an invaluable guide to the current state of scholarship on Indian philosophy. It is a timely and much-needed reference resource, the first of its kind.

Book Synopsis Minds Without Fear by : Nalini Bhushan
Download or read book Minds Without Fear written by Nalini Bhushan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-26 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minds Without Fear is an intellectual and cultural history of India during the period of British occupation. It demonstrates that this was a period of renaissance in India in which philosophy--both in the public sphere and in the Indian universities--played a central role in the emergence of a distinctively Indian modernity. This is also a history of Indian philosophy. It demonstrates how the development of a secular philosophical voice facilitated the construction of modern Indian society and the consolidation of the nationalist movement. Authors Nalini Bhushan and Jay Garfield explore the complex role of the English language in philosophical and nationalist discourse, demonstrating both the anxieties that surrounded English, and the processes that normalized it as an Indian vernacular and academic language. Garfield and Bhushan attend to both Hindu and Muslim philosophers, to public and academic intellectuals, to artists and art critics, and to national identity and nation-building. Also explored is the complex interactions between Indian and European thought during this period, including the role of missionary teachers and the influence of foreign universities in the evolution of Indian philosophy. This pattern of interaction, although often disparaged as "inauthentic" is continuous with the cosmopolitanism that has always characterized the intellectual life of India, and that the philosophy articulated during this period is a worthy continuation of the Indian philosophical tradition.

Book excerpt: First Published in 2001. Part of the Indian Philosophy collection of readings, this volume focuses on Metaphysics. The complement to pramdna theory is prameya theory. Wherea s th e pramdnas are the means of knowledge, the prameyas are the knowables. cognizable entities which constitute the world. With respect to the number and kinds of such entities, there was a very wide variety of opinion among classical Indian philosophers. Moreover, since according to most Indian systems knowledge of reality is at least a necessary condition for liberation , these metaphysical disputes were taken to be of practical as well as theoretical import.
Book Synopsis Columbia Companion to Twentieth-Century Philosophies by : Constantin V. Boundas
Download or read book Columbia Companion to Twentieth-Century Philosophies written by Constantin V. Boundas and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Columbia Companion to Twentieth-Century Philosophies is the first guide to cover both the Anglo-American analytic and European continental traditions. Organized thematically, the volume thoroughly discusses the major movements and fields of each tradition and features the contributions of highly distinguished specialists in their fields. This book is divided into three sections. The first is devoted to highlighting the multidimensional work of philosophers identified with the analytic tradition, with Nicholas Rescher writing on neoidealism, Josephine Donovan commenting on feminist philosophy, Tyler Burge discussing the philosophy of language and mind, and Robert Hanna reflecting on Kant's legacy. The second section presents the thought of those who identified themselves with the continental tradition, featuring Jean Grondin on hermeneutics, Leonard Lawlor on phenomenology, Charles Scott on postmodernism, and Babette Babich on the philosophy of science. This volume also covers logical positivism, naturalism, pragmatism, aesthetics, existentialism, Marxism, the Frankfurt School, structuralism, psychoanalysis, political philosophy, ethics, and the philosophy of religion. The final section addresses concurrent trends in Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and African philosophy, and a comprehensive introduction by the editor not only provides a thorough outline of the problems and issues of the analytic and continental traditions but also boldly challenges the conviction that the two approaches must be rivals. Columbia Companion to Twentieth-Century Philosophies is an invaluable overview of the ideas that have shaped a monumentally important century in the history of philosophy, offering an unusually panoramic perspective that allows readers to form their own interpretations of original materials.
