Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age which is supposedly experiencing a sexual revolution, a volume of thoughtful essays on eros is not only not out of place but perhaps is a positive contribution to the understanding of contempor ary man. It was the conviction of the editors that the scientific view of sexuality, as promoted in such valuable studies as those conducted by Masters and Johnson, needed considerable supplement and per spective. The perspective is here furnished by writers from both Europe and America, authors from various fields, such as philosophy, psychology, and even musicology, all of whom are united, in that their approach to the problem of eros is phenomenologically oriented. At first it might well seem strange that musicology would have much to say about eros. It is true, musicology has been the "science" of music, at least in intent. Yet in a larger view of the discipline, philo sophical and aesthetic problems are also important to it, and this particularly if we agree with Enzo Paci, that our very culture depends on eros. Surely musical culture, as pointed out by Kierkegaard, is the embodiment of what western civilization has known as sensuality; and Mozart's Don Giovanni is its incarnation. On the surface it is easier for us to grasp the work of the philosopher in this area; and, of course, one expects the psychologist to deal with sexuality more explicitly than anyone else.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers Christian spiritual instructors a language for the soul uncovered from the storehouses of Christianity’s ancient living spiritual tradition. That language describes the deep soul movements that unfold in the interior life of believers in response to the Divine invitation. It presents an accessible language of the soul for use in today’s professional, educational, ministerial, and everyday life situations. The end product is an experiential dictionary comprised of sixty word-concepts, which name and explore the inward human reactions to the whispering of God’s Spirit. Those reactions result from inward desires that lead to the embrace of faith, the quest for consecration, and the journey of discipleship. Nurturing these intra-personal choices and commitments is the central task of Christian ministry, but many faith instructors remain unaware of these critical inner-life processes. More than other resources available today, this experiential dictionary informs, enriches, and intensifies the spiritual journeys of genuine disciples and seekers. The volume is tailored for seminaries, churches, schools, and community settings. It has application to the training of ministry leaders, the instruction of believers, and in supporting the growing number of secular mystics who are open to merging their journeys of self-discovery with the quest for Christ-discovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Su"ender and catch: give so you can receive, where the giving is your whole self, in a total experience. This is scarcely new on the American scene, and it is ancient knowledge, East and West. The fears of total surrender, the fears of self-revelation and of total abandon, although genuine, are likewise not new. Yet Kurt H. Wolff does attempt something new here, an epistemologi cal essay with the help of this old idea: his subtitle is 'experience and inquiry today'. He tries to formulate an integrated view which incorporates in the theory of total experience not only the accepted component- esthetics, religion, the recent American experience - but also a metaphysics, a phenomenology, a theory of perception, a social philosophy and a methodology of the social sciences, even a philosophy of history and psychopathology. Phenomenology (especially Alfred Schutz), the critical Frankfurt school (especially Adorno and Marcuse), sociology (especially Georg Simmel), and existentialism (especially Camus) are tied in together. It all looks topsy-turvy at first. We have here scraps of a diary, fragments of correspondence, a stray adolescent love letter, notes on notes on field work, and notes and comments on tutorial seminars plus long excerpts from students' essays, a stray paper in a learned journal summarizing the core of the book, comments piled on comments and a web of self-references, literary criticisms, and pieces of poetry, plus a rich scholarly apparatus.

Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging study of subjectivity and intersubjectivity, Roger Frie develops a critical account of recent conceptions of the subject in philosophy and pdychoanalytic theory. Using a line of analysis strongly grounded in the European tradition, Frie examines the complex relationship between the theories of subjectivity, intersubjectivity, language and love in the work of a diverse body of philosophers and psychoanalyists. He provides lucid interpretations of the work of Sartre, Binswanger, Lacan, Habermas, Heidegger, Freud and others. Because it integrates perspectives from continental philosophy, analytical philosophy, and psychoanalytic theory, this book will appeal to a wide audience in the areas of philosophy, history of philosophy, psychoanalysis, and social theory.

Book excerpt: This book tells how the diverting array of pleasures in eighteenth-century libertine fiction gave way, through a process of thematic drift and realignment, to a powerfully linear story that actually defined sex and the gender roles pertaining to it. Many of the key notions in modern talk about sex are in fact narrative ones: climax, foreplay, and the sex act are all said to lie at the heart of human sexuality. But 'The Telling of the Act' questions whether these notions deserve to be thought of as timeless, and in fact locates their emergence in the second half of the eighteenth century.
