They speak in the voices of fathers to daughters, sons to mothers, sisters to brothers, and wives to husbands. They are intimate, reflective, and colloquial. They tell stories about how we deal with pain and endure with those we love the most.

Book excerpt: Searching for a home on the range, a rancher finds death under the cottonwoods Samuel Wilders tried to love farming. But after years of roping cattle, this cowboy found it impossible to settle down on the Nebraska plains. With his young wife and children in tow, Wilders sets out for Montana—where the sky stretches farther than the eye can believe, and a man needs only a little water to ranch. One day, he leaves his family behind under the shelter of a cottonwood and rides toward town, hoping to do some trading. Before Wilders can get there, a gang of bandits mistakes him for a horse rustler and strings him up from the nearest tree. Abandoned on the range, the Wilders family waits for a husband and father who will never return. A wandering Indian must protect them from Samuel Wilders’s killers—men who are still hungry for blood.

Book excerpt: The contributors to Nervous Systems reassess contemporary artists' and critics' engagement with social, political, biological, and other systems as a set of complex and relational parts: an approach commonly known as systems thinking. Demonstrating the continuing relevance of systems aesthetics within contemporary art, the contributors highlight the ways that artists adopt systems thinking to address political, social, and ecological anxieties. They cover a wide range of artists and topics, from the performances of the Argentinian collective the Rosario Group and the grid drawings of Charles Gaines to the video art of Singaporean artist Charles Lim and the mapping of global logistics infrastructures by contemporary artists like Hito Steyerl and Christoph Büchel. Together, the essays offer an expanded understanding of systems aesthetics in ways that affirm its importance beyond technological applications detached from cultural contexts. Contributors. Sometimes tough, sometimes tender and caring, these stories touch our humanness in ways that are as deeply satisfying as they are entertaining." -Laurelee Roark, coauthor of It's Not About Food "R.V. Schmidt is a born storyteller of the outdoors, wild animals, road trips, heartwarming coincidences and salt-of-the-earth relationships, all set in layer upon layer of natural western beauty, carefully observed and beautifully described. At root is deep wisdom evolved from our rough and penchant frontier ethos plus Schmidt's boundless acceptance of life. All you need is a quiet evening, a comfortable chair, and a fire in the hearth. Book excerpt: This lively book sweeps across dramatic and varied terrains—volcanoes and glaciers, billabongs and canyons, prairies and rain forests—to explore how humans have made sense of our planet’s marvelous landscapes. In a rich weave of scientific, cultural, and personal stories, The Face of the Earth examines mirages and satellite images, swamp-dwelling heroes and Tibetan nomads, cave paintings and popular movies, investigating how we live with the great shaping forces of nature—from fire to changing climates and the intricacies of adaptation. The book illuminates subjects as diverse as the literary life of hollow Earth theories, the links between the Little Ice Age and Frankenstein’s monster, and the spiritual allure of deserts and their scarce waters. Including vivid, on-the-spot accounts by scientists and writers in Saudi Arabia, Australia, Alaska, England, the Rocky Mountains, Antarctica, and elsewhere, The Face of the Earth charts the depth and complexity of our interdependence with the natural world.

Book excerpt: (As seen on CBS News Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood) Trees resonate deeply in the souls of millions of people. A lonely bur oak in the middle of a southwest Wisconsin cornfield spoke to photographer Mark Hirsch. That Tree spoke of hidden beauty and hope. It spoke of patience and dedication. It even gave him personal healing he wasn't aware he needed. Thus every day for the next year Hirsch would quietly attempt to coax the stories from That Tree. Hirsch, after purchasing his first iPhone, scoffed at the idea that a professional photographer would find the camera inside his new phone interesting in any way. A good friend goaded him into trying it and one day in the middle of a January snow storm Hirsch took his first picture of That Tree. He'd driven past That Tree every day for 19 years and never took a picture. That would change. Now a passionate Facebook following of 33,000+ people look for Hirsch's daily picture of That Tree and countless media outlets have featured Hirsch's story including NPR, NBC News, Le Monde, The Guardian, Sierra Club, Chicago Tribune, Denver Post, San Francisco Chronicle, and many more. That Tree is hardcover, 192 pages, measuring 10x10 inches and is published by Press Syndication Group. 2013.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book explores a new conceptual framework for the sustainable management of the boreal forest in the face of climate change. The boreal forest is the second-largest terrestrial biome on Earth and covers a 14 million km2 belt, representing about 25% of the Earth’s forest area. Two-thirds of this forest biome is managed and supplies 37% of global wood production. These forests also provide a range of natural resources and ecosystem services essential to humanity. However, climate change is altering species distributions, natural disturbance regimes, and forest ecosystem structure and functioning. Although sustainable management is the main goal across the boreal biome, a novel framework is required to adapt forest strategies and practices to climate change. This collaborative effort draws upon 148 authors in summarizing the sustainable management of these forests and detailing the most recent experimental and observational results collected from across the boreal biome. It presents the state of sustainable management in boreal forests and highlights the critical importance of this biome in a context of global change because of these forests' key role in a range of natural processes, including carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, and the maintaining of biodiversity. This book is an essential read for academics, students, and practitioners involved in boreal forest management. It outlines the challenges facing sustainable boreal forest management within the context of climate change and serves as a basis for establishing new research avenues, identifying future research trends, and developing climate-adapted forest management plans.

San Francisco's cool Mediterranean climate has made it home to interesting and unusual trees from all over the world - trees as colorful and exotic as the city itself. This new guide combines engaging descriptions of sixty-five different trees with color photos that reflect the visual appeal of San Francisco. Each page covers a different tree, with several paragraphs of interesting text accompanied by one or two photos. Each entry for a tree also lists locations where "landmark" specimens of the tree can be found. Interspersed throughout the book are sidebar stories of general interest related to San Francisco's trees. Trees of San Francisco also includes a dozen tree tours that will link landmark trees and local attractions in interesting San Francisco neighborhoods such as the Castro, Pacific Heights and the Mission - walks that will appeal to tourists as well as Bay Area natives.
