Book excerpt: The predominant welding processes used in fabricating motor cases are inert-gas-shielded welding and resistance-seam welding. Three significant conclusions have been drawn relating to welded fabrication of motor cases: (1) Welding is not currently a limiting factor on the strength levels obtainable in production cases. These cases are being made of high-strength steels heat treated to strength levels between 190,000 and 210,000 uniaxial yield strength. (2) Welding could be used in motor cases in the near future at the following uniaxial-yield-strength levels: 170,000 psi - Ti alloys; 240,000- 250,000 psi low-alloy and hot-work die steels; and 280,000300,000 psi - Coldworked stainless steel or MarAging steels. (3) Welding may be used in motor cases in 2 to 4 years at the following uniaxialyield-strength levels: 200,000 psi - Titanium alloys; 260,000- 300,000 psi - Low-alloy and hotwork die steels; and 340,000 psi - Coldworked stainless steel or Mar-Aging steels. The material was vacuum melted and of the 250 composition. Higher strengths were obtained by the use of cold reduction of the strip before aging. The study was made to establish the required degree of cold reduction, to develop the welding schedules for the various joints of the assembly, and to establish the heat treating procedures for base metal, welds, and fabricated sections. This phase has been specifically designated for the fabrication of three, 20-inch diameter experimental rocket motor cases using the helically wrapped and welded design. (Author).

Book excerpt: Tensile and tensile impact properties are tabulated for electron-beam welded H-11 steel with a variety of post-weld heat treatments. Fracture occurred outside the weld zone in more than half the specimens. Decreasing the tempering temperature caused an increase in both the strength and ductility. Electron beam re-fusion of arc welds resulted in transverse properties comparable to those obtained by electron beam welding gun with a transmission of 90% under vacuum welding conditions. By correlating hardness and peak temperature distributions, the minimum hardness in the heat-affected zone corresponded to a temperature between l350 and l400 F. The magnitude of the minimum hardness was sensitive to the heat treatment of the material prior to welding; the lower the prior tempering temperature, the less was the softening effect.

The capability of industry to fabricate cylindrical case segments using roll and weld technique, machined ring forging and power shear spinning is presented. For closure fabrication, the capability of industry to fabricate closures by spinning, explosive forming and welding is presented. Because of the limited technology currently available with more advanced fabrication techniques such as strip lap, fiberglass winding and cryogenic stretch forming, these processes could not be considered for immediate use on a large motor development program. The current capabilities of industry are further broken down to cover available vertical lathes, horizontal lathes, heat treat facilities, expandable mandrels, forged ring facilities, power shear spinning, welding, roll formers and flat plate production. Tables are presented which summarize the availability and requirements of facilities, cost and lead time to obtain the capability for four motor diameters; 100, 136, 156 and 200 inches diameter.

The composite consists of a stretched belly band vessel, to one end of which is welded a mechanically stretched nozzle housing. On one of these vessels, simulated antenna clips were resistance-welded to the cylinder walls. Both vessels were then stretched cryogenically to a pressure of 3000 psi to strengthen the newly welded regions. The vessel to which the nozzle housing and antenna clips were welded was subjected to hydrotest to yield after restretching. The vessel first yielded in the region of the hemispherical head to nozzle housing juncture at a pressure of 2700 psig. This was equivalent to a nominal stress on the thin-walled cylinder of 194,000 psi, which meets the strength level requirement of the motor case design. Two 80% boss belly band vessels were fabricated and cryogenically stretched. These two 80% boss vessels were inspected after stretch, and both vessels were dime sionally acceptable. (Author).

Book excerpt: The fundamental aspects of cryogenic stretch forming as applied to the fabrication of ultrahigh strength rocket cases of various configurations were investigated. In this process, pressure vessels made of 301 stainless steel by conventional roll and weld techniques, are stretched to final size and shape by internal pressurization at -320 F.A maximum nominal ultimate strength of 284,000 psi at room temperature was achieved in one case. In other cases a strength level of 260,000 psi was readily attained. It was also shown that close dimensional control of cylindrical cases can be accomplished by stretch forming in a die. A metallurgical investigation was performed to determine the effect of type and composition of materials on their behavior in the cryogenic stretch forming process. Strength levels of 325,000 psi were achieved in tensile coupon tests. Uniaxial tensile tests of materials utilized in case fabrication were correlated with the plastic flow behavior of these materials when stretched biaxially. (Author).
