Book excerpt: Abstract: Attention to carbon nanotubes (CNT) reinforced aluminum matrix composites has been growing considerably for the past decade owing to the expected improvement in specific properties that this nano-composite could offer. Functionally graded material (FGM), is also a rapidly developing field of materials science offering the possibility to manufacture components with desired properties at selective locations to serve different applications. Nano FGMs are the newest generation of this class of materials that is currently being theoretically researched intensely with more requirement for experimental research to support and verify the theoretical and numerical models. In the current research, an experimental study was conducted to develop a route to fabricate Al-CNT functionally graded cylinders varying materials along radial direction. Larger content of CNT reinforcement was selectively used at the outer layers to provide the highest strength, hardness and wear resistance at the surface subjected to higher stresses and more severe environments. Pure Al was chosen as the core material since it is subjected to lower stresses and to provide overall ductility to the material. The gradient selected is also cost effective as the expensive CNT is placed only in the layers that require most strengthening while maintaining a soft tough core leading to a balanced set of properties. The produced specimens having increased strength and hardness at the surface in addition to overall combination of high strength, ductility and light weight, together with the cylindrical geometry of the produced FGMs could be used in various applications especially mobility related applications such as drive shafts for aerospace and automotive industries. Testing and characterization of the produced samples were carried out to evaluate the performance of the cylindrical FGMs and the interfacial bonding between the different layers. Two sets of functionally graded specimens were produced; first is “FG2%” having the 2%CNT-Al at the surface then followed by layers of 1%CNT-Al, milled Al and reaching pure Al at the core. The second is “FG5%” having the 5%CNT-Al at the surface then followed by layers of 2%CNT-Al, milled Al and reaching pure Al at the core. Two specifically designed molds were manufactured to produce the functionally graded cylinders; mold A and mold B with enhancements implemented in mold B to produce well bonded cylindrical FGMs. Al-CNT composite powders with 1, 2, 5wt.% CNT fraction as well as milled Al were manufactured deploying planetary high energy ball milling technique (HEBM) of powders of CNT and Al. These were loaded in the designated layers of the manufactured molds. Powder metallurgy process was followed; starting with cold compaction and followed by sintering, then hot extrusion to produce compacts of Al-CNT FGMs of high density. Mechanical testing and characterization were carried out on the produced. specimens and these included; mechanical compression, tension, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy as well as nanoindentation. It was concluded that the developed route and novel manufactured molds were successful to produce well bonded functionally graded cylindrical structures of Al-CNT. Adding CNT to Al reaching 2%wt. CNT at the outer layer with varying composition to reach pure Al at the core resulted in very unique balanced properties. The samples showed high strength while retaining a higher percentage of the material ductility compared to pure Al and homogeneous composite competitor having the same overall CNT content. The compression strength and hardness values also showed significant enhancement. Increase in content of CNT up to 5%wt. showed a remarkable increase in compression strength and hardness with some enhancement in modulus of elasticity. However, its full potential of strength and ductility could not be confirmed in this study due to fracture of the specimens under tension outside the gauge length. This could be due to increased sample notch sensitivity or increased internal stresses between layers as CNT percentage increases

Book excerpt: This discovery of carbon nanotubes (CNT) three decades ago ushered in the technological era of nanotechnology. Among the most widely studied areas of CNT research is their use as structural reinforcements in composites. This book describes the development of CNT reinforced metal matrix composites (CNT-MMCs) over the last two decades. The field of CNT-MMCs is abundant in fundamental science, rich in engineering challenges and innovations and ripe for technological maturation and commercialization. The authors have sought to present the current state of the-art in CNT-MMC technology from their synthesis to their myriad potential end-use applications. Specifically, topics explored include: • Advantages, limitations, and evolution of processing techniques used to synthesize and fabricate CNT-MMCs • Emphasizes dispersion techniques of CNTs in metallic systems, a key challenge to the successful and widespread implementation of CNT-MMCs. Methods for quantification and improved control of CNT distributions are presented • Methods for quantification and improved control of CNT distributions are presented • Characterization techniques uniquely suited for charactering these nanoscale materials and their many chemical and physical interactions with the metal matrix, including real-time in-situ characterization of deformation mechanisms • Electron microscope images from premier studies enrich discussions on micro-mechanical modeling, interfacial design, mechanical behavior, and functional properties • A chapter is dedicated to the emergence of dual reinforcement composites that seek to enhance the efficacy of CNTs and lead to material properties by design This book highlights seminal findings in CNT-MMC research and includes several tables listing processing methods, associated CNT states, and resulting properties in order to aid the next generation of researchers in advancing the science and engineering of CNT-MMCs. In addition, a survey of the patent literature is presented in order to shed light on what the first wave of CNT-MMC commercialization may look like and the challenges that will have to be overcome, both technologically and commercially.

Book excerpt: From the Foreword, written by legendary nano pioneer M. Meyyappan, Chief Scientist for Exploration Technology NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California, USA: "...there is critical need for a book to summarize the status of the field but more importantly to lay out the principles behind the technology. This is what Professor Arvind Agarwal and his co-workers ... have done here." Carbon Nanotubes: Reinforced Metal Matrix Composites reflects the authors’ desire to share the benefits of nanotechnology with the masses by developing metal matrix carbon nanotube (MM-CNT) composites for large-scale applications. Multiwall carbon nanotubes can now be produced on a large scale and at a significantly reduced cost. The book explores potential applications and applies the author’s own research to highlight critical developmental issues for different MM-CNT composites—and then outline novel solutions. With this problem-solving approach, the book explores: Advantages, limitations, and the evolution of processing techniques used for MM-CNT composites Characterization techniques unique to the study of MM-CNT composites—and the limitations of these methods Existing research on different MM-CNT composites, presented in useful tables that include composition, processing method, quality of CNT dispersion, and properties The micro-mechanical strengthening that results from adding CNT The applicability of micro-mechanics models in MM-CNT composites Significance of chemical stability for carbon nanotubes in the metal matrix as a function of processing, and its impact on CNT/metal interface and mechanical properties Computational studies that have not been sufficiently covered although they are essential to research and development The critical issue of CNT dispersion in the metal matrix, as well as a unique way to quantify CNT distribution and subsequently improve control of the processing parameters for obtaining improved properties Carbon Nanotubes: Reinforced Metal Matrix Composites paints a vivid picture of scientific and application achievements in this field. Exploring the mechanisms through which CNTs are enhancing the properties of different metal-based composites, the authors provide a roadmap to help researchers develop MM-CNT composites and choose potential materials for use in emerging areas of technology.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Recently, nanomaterials have been vigorously studied for the development of biosensors. Among them, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have stimulated enormous interest for constructing biosensors due to their unique physical and chemical properties such as high surface-to-volume ratio, high conductivity, high strength and chemical inertness. Our study is to develop a general design of biosensors based on vertically aligned CNT arrays. Glucose biosensor is selected as the model system to verify the design of biosensors. In the preliminary design, glucose oxidase (GOx) is attached to the walls of the porous alumina membrane by adsorption. Porous highly ordered anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) prepared by two-step anodization are used as templates. Deposited gold on both sides of template surfaces serve as a contact and prevent non-specific adhesion of GOx on the surface. In order to find out optimized thickness of gold coating, the oxidation and reduction (redox) reaction in [Fe(CN)6]3\168C /[Fe(CN)6]4\168C system is monitored by Cyclic Voltammetry (CV). Subsequently, enzymatic redox reaction in glucose solutions is also attempted by CV. We expect protein layers with GOx form a conductive network. However, no obvious enzymatic redox reaction is detected in the voltammogram. To take advantage of the attractive properties of CNTs, the design of enzyme electrodes is modified by attaching CNT onto the sidewalls of AAO template nanopores and then immobilizing GOx to the sidewalls and tips of CNTs. AAO templates provided vertical, parallel, well separated and evenly spacing nanochannels for CNT growth. Cobalt is used as a catalyst to fabricate CNTs. As a result, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are fabricated inside the AAO templates by catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD). Characterization of AAO templates and cobalt electrochemical deposition are employed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS). Detailed structure and texture of CNTs are examined by transmission electron microscope (TEM).

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The design, fabrication, and characterization of polymer-carbon nanotube (CNT) composites have generated a significant amount of attention in the fields of materials science and polymer chemistry. The challenge in fabricating composites that exploit the unique properties of the CNT and the ideal processing ability and low cost of the polymer is in achieving a uniform dispersion of the filler in the polymer matrix. This body of work focuses on (1) techniques employed to disperse CNTs into a polymer matrix and (2) the effects of CNTs on the mechanical and electrical properties of the polymer. Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), an amorphous polymer, and poly (4-methyl-1-pentene) (P4M1P), a semi crystalline polymer, were chosen as the matrices. Non-functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes and soot (unpurified carbon nanotubes) were chosen as the filler material.

Book excerpt: This thesis elaborates the application of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and it is discussed in two parts. In the first part of the thesis, two types of CNTs inks for inkjet materials printer are prepared. They are both chemical stable and printable, effective and easily made. The sheet resistance of printed films decreases exponentially as the number of layers increases. In the second part of this study, CNTs/ZnO composite structures are fabricated to understand the electronic and optical properties. The materials were deposited by two different methods: drop-drying and RF magnetic sputtering system on flexible polymer substrates. To further increase the conductivity of the various layers of deposited CNTs films, electrical and optical characterizations are also done. This study establishes CNTs as a multi-functional semitransparent conductor, which can be deposited at room-temperature with other transparent conductive oxide (TCO) composites for application in flexible electronics and printed circuit and sensors.

Book excerpt: Furthermore these grids provide a low cost, mass producible, efficient, reliable, and versatile platform for direct TEM, AFM, SEM, and Raman analysis of as-grown nanomaterials, eliminating the need for any post-processing growth. We also explored fabrication and characterization of single-walled carbon nanotube films which are three-dimensional films of tens of nanometers thickness, consisting of an interwoven mesh of single-walled carbon nanotubes. We demonstrate, for the first time, patterning of SWNT films down to submicron lateral dimensions as small as 50 nm using e-beam lithography and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching. This simple and efficient "top-down" patterning capability developed could open up tremendous opportunities for integrating single-walled nanotube films into a wide range of electronic and optoelectronic devices. Furthermore, we fabricate and characterize the effect of device geometry on the dark current of metalsemiconductor- metal (MSM) photodetectors based on SWNT film-GaAs Schottky contacts. We observed that dark currents of the MSM devices scale rationally with device geometry, such as the device active area, finger width, and finger spacing. These results open up the possibility of integrating SWNT films as transparent and conductive Schottky electrodes in conventional semiconductor electronic and optoelectronic devices.
