Book excerpt: This book traces the origins of modern varieties of Yiddish and presents evidence for the claim that, contrary to most accounts, Yiddish only developed into a separate language in the 15th century. Through a careful analysis of Yiddish phonology, morphology, orthography, and the Yiddish lexicon in all its varieties, Alexander Beider shows how what are commonly referred to as Eastern Yiddish and Western Yiddish have different ancestors. Specifically, he argues that the western branch is based on German dialects spoken in western Germany with some Old French influence, while the eastern branch has its origins in German dialects spoken in the modern-day Czech Republic with some Old Czech influence. The similarities between the two branches today are mainly a result of the close links between the underlying German dialects, and of the close contact between speakers. Following an introduction to the definition and classification of Yiddish and its dialects, chapters in the book investigate the German, Hebrew, Romance, and Slavic components of Yiddish, as well as the sound changes that have occurred in the various dialects. The book will be of interest to all those working in the areas of Yiddish and Jewish Studies in particular, and historical linguistics and history more generally.

In so doing Robert Weinberg provides a fruitful lens through which to investigate the social, economic, political, and cultural developments of modern Russia. Here, Weinberg reveals that the 'Jewish Question' and, by extension anti-Semitism emerged at the end of the 18th century when the partitions of Poland made hundreds of thousands of Jews subjects of the Russian crown. He skillfully argues the phrase itself implies the singular nature of Jews as a group of people whose religion, culture, and occupational make-up prevent them from fitting into predominantly Christian societies. The book then expounds how other characteristics were associated with the group over time: in particular, debates about rights of citizenship, the impact of industrialization, the emergence of the nation-state, and the proliferation of new political ideologies and movements contributed to the changing nature of the 'Jewish Question'. Its content may have not remained static, but its purpose consistently questions whether or not Jews pose a threat to the stability and well-being of the societies in which they live and this, in a specifically Russian context, is what Weinberg examines so expertly.

In An Inch or Two of Time, Jordan Finkin shows how Jewish modernists of the early twentieth century had a distinct perspective on this innovative metaphorical vocabulary. As members of a national-ethnic-religious community long denied the rights and privileges of self-determination, with a dramatically internalized sense of exile and landlessness, the Jewish writers at the core of this investigation reimagined their spatial and temporal orientation and embeddedness. They set as the fulcrum of their imagery the metaphorical power of time and space. Where non-Jewish writers might tend to view space as a given—an element of their own sense of belonging to a nation at home in a given territory—the Jewish writers discussed here spatialized time: they created an as-if space out of time, out of history. They understood their writing to function as a kind of organ of perception on its own. Jewish literature thus presents a particularly dynamic system for working out the implications of that understanding, and as such, this book argues, it is an indispensable part of the modern library.

He is known mainly as a structuralist and a Romance linguist, but his work is in fact far more expansive in scope, including a comprehensive linguistic theory as well as writings on a wide range of issues, from semantics, syntax, typology, variational linguistics, language change, pragmatics and text linguistics to Vulgar Latin, the history of the philosophy of language and the history of Romance linguistics. Coseriu's thought is founded on solid philosophical principles, and his life brought him into contact with a number of different academic traditions and cultures. However, for a variety of reasons (among which, the languages in which he tended to publish: Spanish, Italian, French and German), knowledge of his thought is rather marginal in the Anglo-American world. Die Überlebenden brachten ihre Kultur in neue Umgebungen, wo sie teilweise wiederbelebt wurde. Auch die Sprachen fielen dem zum Opfer oder wurden im Zuge der Assimilation und Akkulturation aufgegeben oder zumindest durch die verschiedenen neuen Kontaktsituationen stark beeinflusst. Als in den 1950er Jahren absehbar war, dass viele Überlebende, die in den alten europäischen Territorien aufgewachsen waren, ihre Muttersprache nicht an ihre Kinder und Enkel weitergeben würden, erkannte Uriel Weinreich die Notwendigkeit und Chance, Sprache und Kultur dieser Sprecher systematisch zu dokumentieren. Im Rahmen seines Projekts 'Language and Culture Archive of Ashkenazic Jewry' (LCAAJ) sammelten 18 Interviewer zwischen 1959 und 1972 auf der Grundlage eines umfangreichen Fragebogens Interviews mit fast 1.000 Informanten. Das im Rahmen des LCAAJ gesammelte Material ist ein unerschöpflicher Fundus und die beste Quelle, die wir zu den historischen jiddischen Dialekten Mitteleuropas haben. Mit der Veröffentlichung der digitalisierten Kopien der schriftlichen Aufzeichnungen (Feldnotizen) durch die Columbia Libraries im Jahr 2018 wurden die Rohdaten des LCAAJ der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. Zwischen 2017 und 2022 hat das Projekt 'Syntax of Eastern Yiddish Dialects' (SEYD) diese Feldnotizen im Hinblick auf syntaktische und auch morphologische Strukturen ausgewertet. Der vorliegende Band präsentiert eine Auswahl dieser Phänomene. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf den empirischen Daten sowie deren Einbettung in einen (mikro)typologischen Kontext. Eine Vielzahl von Karten veranschaulicht die räumliche Dimension der grammatischen Variation in den ehemaligen europäischen jiddischen Dialekten.
