Book Synopsis Observation of Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances by the Doppler Technique with Spaced Transmitters by : John Emory Jones
Download or read book Observation of Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances by the Doppler Technique with Spaced Transmitters written by John Emory Jones and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a radio investigation of traveling ionospheric disturbances carried out near Boulder, Colorado, over a 1-year period from June 1967 to June 1968. The three-dimensional motions of F2 layer disturbances were measured by the high frequency Doppler technique with spaced transmitters and at several probing frequencies. Horizontal motions were determined by cross-correlating three signals on frequencies near 5 MHz, whose reflection points were approximately at the corners of a horizontal equilateral triangle with 40-km sides. Vertical motions were determined from cross-correlation of signals on frequencies of 3.3, 4.0, and 5.1 MHz, whose reflection points were aligned vertically.
Book Synopsis Contribution of X-ray and Extreme Ultraviolet Radiation of Solar Flares to Sudden Frequency Deviations by : Richard Frank Donnelly
Download or read book Contribution of X-ray and Extreme Ultraviolet Radiation of Solar Flares to Sudden Frequency Deviations written by Richard Frank Donnelly and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High time and intensity resolution satellite measurements of X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation during solar flares are studied to determine the wavelength dependence of the flare radiation responsible for sudden frequency deviations (SFD). SFD's measure the flare-induced effects in the E and F1 regions of the ionosphere and are in effect like a broadband (1-1030 Å) detector for impulsive flare enhancements. He II 303.8 Å, O V 629.7 Å, H Ly [upsilon] 972.5 Å, C III 977.0 Å, and H Ly [alpha] 1215.7 Å were found to have essentially the same time dependence as the total ionizing radiation producing SFD's, except that they decay faster than the net 1-1030 Å radiation. Flare enhancements of Fe XV 284.1 Å, Fe XVI 335.3 Å, Si XII 499.3 Å. Mg X 625.3 Å, and Ne VIII 770.4 Å, which are normally coronal lines, appear to have a much slower time dependence than the radiation responsible for SFD's. X-rays in the 0.5-3 Å range are slightly slower than the radiation responsible for SFD's during the decay stage; 1-8 Å X-ray flares are slower, especially during the decay stages; and 8-20 Å flare radiation enhancements are slower throughout the entire SFD.
Book Synopsis ATS Observations of Sudden Increases of Total Electron Content Induced by EUV and X-ray Burst of Solar Flares by : Richard Frank Donnelly
Download or read book ATS Observations of Sudden Increases of Total Electron Content Induced by EUV and X-ray Burst of Solar Flares written by Richard Frank Donnelly and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ATS-satellite observations of sudden increases in total electron content (SITECs) produced by extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) and X-ray bursts of solar flares are presented quantitatively and interpreted qualitatively. Large SITECs for the white-light flare of July 4, 1974, and for the large flares on July 5, September 10, and September 19, 1974, are illustrated. The time rate of change of total electron content dN (subscript)T/dt was directly compared with SFD (Sudden Frequency Deviations) measurements. The ATS-6 dN(subscript)T/dt measurements are essentially transionospheric SFD measurements. The main difference with respect to ground-based SFD measurements is that, in addition to the 100 to 200 km altitude range where ionospheric electron loss rates are high, the ATS-6 measurements also observe the low loss-rate F2 region. Because of this low ionization loss rate, dN(subscript)T/dt includes more of the slow radiation effects and proceeds to a negative decay phase much later than the ground-based SFDs.

Book Synopsis Ionospheric Space Weather by : Timothy Fuller-Rowell
Download or read book Ionospheric Space Weather written by Timothy Fuller-Rowell and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is the outcome of an American Geophysical Union Chapman Conference on longitude and hemispheric dependence of ionospheric space weather, including the impact of waves propagating from the lower atmosphere. The Chapman Conference was held in Africa as a means of focusing attention on an extensive geographic region where observations are critically needed to address some of the fundamental questions of the physical processes driving the ionosphere locally and globally. The compilation of papers from the conference describes the physics of this system and the mechanisms that control ionospheric space weather in a combination of tutorial-like and focused articles that will be of value to the upper atmosphere scientific community in general and to ongoing global magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere (MIT) modeling efforts in particular. A number of articles from each science theme describe details of the physics behind each phenomenon that help to solve the complexity of the MIT system. Because this volume is an outcome of the research presented at this first space science Chapman Conference held in Africa, it has further provided an opportunity for African scientists to communicate their research results with the international community. In addition, the meeting and this conference volume will greatly enhance the space science education and research interest in the African continent and around the world. Ionospheric Space Weather includes articles from six science themes that were discussed at the Chapman Conference in 2012. These include: Hemispherical dependence of magnetospheric energy injection and the thermosphere-ionosphere response Longitude and hemispheric dependence of storm-enhanced densities (SED) Response of the thermosphere and ionosphere to variability in solar radiation Longitude spatial structure in total electron content and electrodynamics Temporal response to lower-atmosphere disturbances Ionospheric irregularities and scintillation Ionospheric Space Weather: Longitude Dependence and Lower Atmosphere Forcing will be useful to both active researchers and advanced graduate students in the field of physics, geophysics, and engineering, especially those who are keen to acquire a global understanding of ionospheric phenomena, including observational information from all longitude sectors across the globe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, which has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969, is de voted to the recording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 9 contains literature published in 1973 and received before August 15, 1973; some older liter ature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included. We acknowledge with thanks contributions to this volume by Dr. J. Bouska, who surveyed journals and publications in the Czech language and supplied us with abstracts in English, and by the Common wealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (C.S.I.R.O.), Sydney, for providing titles and abstracts of papers on radio astronomy.
