Book excerpt: This study examines some of the characteristics and risk factors of intrafamilial (family) and extrafamilial (outsider) child sexual. Few studies have examined the characteristics of either type of abuse. Many studies look at risk factors but do not examine abuse by family members and outsiders separately. I emphasize the role of opportunity, i.e., the circumstances that bring victims in contact with offenders in the absence of guardians. I use a survey of children to look at a childs age, gender, and family structure to see if they affect whether the child is abused and whether the abuser is a family member or an outsider. I identify which is more likely to be repeated and which is more likely to have a greater level of intimacy. I use binomial and multinomial logistic regression as well as chi-square. The results suggest that the younger a child is the more at risk they are for family sexual abuse. Females are more likely to be abused than males by family members and outsiders. Reconstituted families and single parent families are particularly likely to increase the risk of sexual abuse in general and by family members. Abuse by outsiders is likely to involve more intimate sexual encounters than family abuse. This knowledge gives us a greater understanding of who is at risk and what they are at risk of when looking at family and outsider child sexual abuse.

Book excerpt: In the UK today, it is estimated that nearly one in twenty children are subjected to sexual abuse, with the overwhelming majority being abused within the family environment. However, despite its prevalence, intrafamilial child sexual abuse remains largely shrouded in silence, shame and stigma. Taking a phenomenological approach, this book presents ten retrospective first-person accounts from adult victims and survivors, exploring the impact of such abuse throughout the life course. These stories illustrate how child sexual abuse can cause trauma affecting almost every aspect of life: emotionally, psychologically, interpersonally, behaviourally and cognitively. However, they also demonstrate the remarkable resilience of the human spirit; of how adverse experiences can be lived with, processed, and assimilated. These accounts address a gap in what academics, practitioners and policy makers know about child sexual abuse; give victims and survivors a voice; and open up a conversation about one of the most enduring societal and cultural problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child sexual abuse has become a prevalent topic of study and discussion in the fields of Child Psychology, Pediatrics, Law Enforcement, and Social Work. But even with the widespread knowledge of identifiable behavior in its victims and abusers, society's response to child sexual abuse is failing profoundly. Rebecca Bolen's authoritative book, Child Sexual Abuse: Its Scope and Our Failure, clearly defines the scope of child sexual abuse and addresses society's ability to respond to the problem. It is her thesis that society's response to child sexual abuse is failing because the policies, programs, and statutes designed to assess and identify abuse are grounded in historical and myth-bound theoretical child sexual abuse literature rather than in the empirical knowledge base. This comprehensive text on child sexual abuse covers: The historical conceptualization of child sexual abuse, starting with Freud. A review of the empirical literature on the incidence and prevalence of child sexual abuse. The professional response to child sexual abuse. The most sophisticated model of risk of child sexual abuse done to date. Two new models of understanding reactions by nonoffending guardians. The pervasiveness of the threat of extrafamilial abuse. £/LIST£ This text is divided into three main areas of discussion: Sociohistorical Context, Scope of the Problem, and Aftermath. This comprehensive review can be used not only as a text, but also as a primary reference for professionals in government, law enforcement, medical, mental health, and any agency that works with child sexual abuse offenders and victims.

Book excerpt: "In the current study, data on extrafamilial sexual offending were extracted from Crown briefs of evidence prepared by the Victorian Police Sexual Crimes Squad. Statements by victims and transcripts of perpetrator interviews were the primary sources of information. Categorical data relating to 721 incidents of child sexual abuse committed by 93 extrafamilial perpetrators against 237 victims were coded for analysis. ... The prime interest was in associations between perpetrator characteristics (e.g., chronicity of offending, employment, relationship to victim) and victim characteristics (e.g., gender, age group). However, the analyses posed some quantitative and statistical challenges, as two of the three datasets obtained were not all independent (e.g., perpetrators who had offended against more than one victim were overly represented in the victim and incident datasets). ... The associative results obtained from the perpetrator dataset were discussed in terms of the perpetrators' preferences for victim type, whereas results obtained from the victim dataset were discussed in terms of the likelihood for being a victim. High chronicity perpetrators showed a tendency to prefer paedophilic aged males and low chronicity perpetrators showed a tendency to prefer hebephilic aged [e.g. 13-16 years] females. Hebephilic aged females were more likely to be a victim of a low chronicity perpetrator. ..."--Abstract.

Drawing attention to this frequently overlooked population, the author explores the familial, extrafamilial and situational factors conducive to various types of sexual abuse by children so young. For professionals and researchers having to consider sexually aggressive acts by children as young as two or three, this book examines the theories and frameworks used to explain this kind of behaviour, and outlines their associated social and psychological characteristics. Sharon KAraji identifies nine programmes and practices designed by therapists treating individuals, families and groups deali
