Book excerpt: We develop a twofold analysis of how the information provided by several economic indicators can be used in Markov-switching dynamic factor models to identify the business cycle turning points. First, we compare the performance of a fully non- linear multivariate specification (one-step approach) with the shortcut of using a linear factor model to obtain a coincident indicator which is then used to compute the Markov-switching probabilities (two-step approach). Second, we examine the role of increasing the number of indicators. Our results suggest that one step is generally preferred to two steps, although its marginal gains diminish as the quality of the indicators increases and as more indicators are used to identify the non-linear signal. Using the four constituent series of the Stock-Watson coincident index, we illustrate these results for US data.

Book excerpt: "The Influence of Human Capital on Economic Growth" delves into a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between human capital and regional financial development in West Java Province. This research covers the period from 2017 to 2019 and employs a quantitative research approach using mathematical analysis techniques. To gather data for the analysis, the book relies on secondary sources, specifically the data reports provided by the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (Badan Pusat Statistik or BPS). These reports offer valuable information crucial for understanding the dynamics of regional financial development in West Java Province. The research technique utilized in this study is panel regression, specifically employing the GLS fixed-effect model approach. This statistical method allows for the examination of both cross-sectional and time series data, making it suitable for analyzing the relationship between human capital and regional financial development over a specific time period. The GLS fixed-effect model accounts for individual characteristics of each region in West Java Province, providing a more accurate estimation of the impact of human capital on financial growth. The study's findings shed light on the critical role of human capital, with a specific focus on education, in influencing economic growth in West Java Province. The estimation results highlight the significant impact of the education variable on the region's financial development, emphasizing the importance of investing in education and improving educational infrastructure to enhance the quality of the workforce and stimulate economic growth. While the relationship between human capital and financial development extends beyond education alone, the estimation results reveal education as the most dominant factor influencing financial development in West Java Province. Therefore, efforts to improve the education level of the workforce should be prioritized to enhance productivity and drive economic progress. Based on the research findings, the book proposes recommendations for the local governments in West Java Province. It suggests a substantial increase in regional expenditure allocations specifically dedicated to the education and health sectors to improve the quality of education and healthcare. By prioritizing human capital development and creating an enabling environment for skills enhancement, West Java Province can pave the way for sustainable and inclusive financial growth. "The Influence of Human Capital on Economic Growth" provides valuable insights into the impact of human capital on regional financial development in West Java Province. It emphasizes the significant role of education in fostering economic growth and calls for increased investments in education and health sectors. By prioritizing human capital development and creating an enabling environment for skills enhancement, West Java Province can pave the way for sustainable and inclusive financial growth.

Book excerpt: The International Conference on Industrial, Engineering and Other Applications of Applied Intelligent Systems (IEA/AIE), always sponsored by the International So- ety of Applied Intelligence (ISAI), emphasizes applications of applied intelligent systems to solve real-life problems in all areas. It is held every year and has become one of the biggest and most important academic activities concerning the theory and applications of intelligent systems in the world. The IEA/AIE 2009 conference was hosted by the National University of Tainan and National University of Kaohsiung in Taiwan. This was the first time that the IEA/AIE conference was held in Taiwan. We received 286 papers from all parts of the world. Only 84 papers were selected for publication in this volume of LNAI proceedings. Each paper was reviewed by at least two anonymous referees to assure the high quality. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the Program Committee members and all the reviewers for their hard work, which helped us to select the highest quality papers for the conference. These papers highlight opportunities and challenges for the next generation of applied int- ligence and reveal technological innovations in real applications.

Book excerpt: Machine learning models are becoming increasingly important in the prediction of economic crises. The models, however, use datasets comprising a large number of predictors (features) which impairs model interpretability and their ability to provide adequate guidance in the design of crisis prevention and mitigation policies. This paper introduces surrogate data models as dimensionality reduction tools in large-scale crisis prediction models. The appropriateness of this approach is assessed by their application to large-scale crisis prediction models developed at the IMF. The results are consistent with economic intuition and validate the use of surrogates as interpretability tools.

Book excerpt: The contents of this volume comprise the proceedings of the International Symposia in Economic Theory and Econometrics conference held in 1987 at the IC^T2 (Innovation, Creativity, and Capital) Institute at the University of Texas at Austin. The essays present fundamental new research on the analysis of complicated outcomes in relatively simple macroeconomic models. The book covers econometric modelling and time series analysis techniques in five parts. Part I focuses on sunspot equilibria, the study of uncertainty generated by nonstochastic economic models. Part II examines the more traditional examples of deterministic chaos: bubbles, instability, and hyperinflation. Part III contains the most current literature dealing with empirical tests for chaos and strange attractors. Part IV deals with chaos and informational complexity. Part V, Nonlinear Econometric Modelling, includes tests for and applications of nonlinearity.

Book excerpt: Complex dynamics constitute a growing and increasingly important area as they offer a strong potential to explain and formalize natural, physical, financial and economic phenomena. This book pursues the ambitious goal to bring together an extensive body of knowledge regarding complex dynamics from various academic disciplines. Beyond its focus on economics and finance, including for instance the evolution of macroeconomic growth models towards nonlinear structures as well as signal processing applications to stock markets, fundamental parts of the book are devoted to the use of nonlinear dynamics in mathematics, statistics, signal theory and processing. Numerous examples and applications, almost 700 illustrations and numerical simulations based on the use of Matlab make the book an essential reference for researchers and students from many different disciplines who are interested in the nonlinear field. An appendix recapitulates the basic mathematical concepts required to use the book.
