Some scientists believe that these studies are well-conducted, and that positive results obtained support the existence of ESP. In contrast, critics have argued that there are serious methodological errors in such experiemnts and that their results should be ignored.

Book excerpt: All attempts to test people's ESP abilities overlook the fact that ESP is an undeveloped function, so we have to learn how to use it to begin with, not just see how much ESP we can show. Psychologist Charles T. Tart applied basic principles of learning to this task to show how training under conditions of immediate feedback could enhance ESP ability. This highly readable book, originally published by the University of Chicago Press, is the theory and a comprehensive study suggesting the principles can work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If extrasensory perception is a common human ability, why can't we all score high on ESP tests? This book answers the question by describing psychological determinants of success and failure in extrasensory perception. Some of the most signifi cant points raised in the editor's enlightening introduction are developed in greater detail in the nine essays that follow, all of them important statements giving a clear picture of research into ESP and the debate that surrounds it. Each essay is followed by a comment relating the essay to the field as a whole. In essays on the debate about ESP, an attack (by C. E. M. Hansel) is followed by a rebuttal (by J. B. Rhine and J. G. Pratt), offering the reader insight into the peculiar tension surrounding the ESP controversy. The book also includes a balanced overview of problems in the field by J. C. Crumbaugh, and six other essays on the psychological factors that influence research on ESP. Controversy over ESP is of special interest also because the questions critics raise relate closely to problems within psychology itself. In addition, the essays reflect a quality common to much research: the excitement of uncovering results that advance our knowledge. This book is intended for supplementary course use. Because of the fundamental problems it addresses, it also offers richly rewarding reading for all teaching and practicing psychologists as well as for the interested generalist. A substantial number of research reports are cited throughout, so that any reader seeking further information will find the cited references invaluable.

Book excerpt: Extrasensory Perception After Sixty Years: A Critical Appraisal of the Research in Extra-Sensory Perception, which was first published in 1940, represented the follow-up to parapsychologist Joseph Banks Rhine’s 1934 book, Extrasensory Perception. In Extrasensory Perception After Sixty Years: A Critical Appraisal of the Research in Extra-Sensory Perception, Rhine and his colleagues endeavor to present a complete review of the recent research in ESP and to include in their survey “everything that is of importance to know in deciding whether ESP occurs. and what it is like if it does occur.” Using three experiments that they believed demonstrated ESP, namely the Pearce-Pratt experiment, the Pratt-Woodruff experiment, and the Ownbey-Zirkle series, the book’s first two parts deal with the question of whether ESP does occur. The formulation of the problem is presented, the mathematical and experimental methods used in attempting its solution, a survey of results obtained, and a consideration of the adequacy of some 35 hypotheses proposed as explanations alternative to ESP. Part II presents a survey of published criticisms and critical comments invited for this volume, whilst Part III considers the nature of ESP; the incidence of ESP ability; conditions that affect ESP performance; physical relations of ESP; ESP as a psychological process. The final part sketches “the outstanding problems that still remain unsolved, the methods under contemplation by which they may possibly be solved, and the further needs and prospects which confront investigators.” The present volume includes 21 appendices, a detailed glossary, as well as a list of 361 references.

Book excerpt: The definitive history of the military's decades-long investigation into mental powers and phenomena, from the author of Pulitzer Prize finalist The Pentagon's Brain and international bestseller Area 51. This is a book about a team of scientists and psychics with top secret clearances. For more than forty years, the U.S. government has researched extrasensory perception, using it in attempts to locate hostages, fugitives, secret bases, and downed fighter jets, to divine other nations' secrets, and even to predict future threats to national security. The intelligence agencies and military services involved include CIA, DIA, NSA, DEA, the Navy, Air Force, and Army-and even the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Now, for the first time, New York Times bestselling author Annie Jacobsen tells the story of these radical, controversial programs, using never before seen declassified documents as well as exclusive interviews with, and unprecedented access to, more than fifty of the individuals involved. Speaking on the record, many for the first time, are former CIA and Defense Department scientists, analysts, and program managers, as well as the government psychics themselves. Who did the U.S. government hire for these top secret programs, and how do they explain their military and intelligence work? How do scientists approach such enigmatic subject matter? What interested the government in these supposed powers and does the research continue? Phenomena is a riveting investigation into how far governments will go in the name of national security.

Book excerpt: This book is about the nature of extrasensory perception, and is based on a 25-year investigation into the physical and biological principles underlying its occurrence. Jon Taylor has carried out a careful examination of the case histories and laboratory research. He concludes that precognition is the fundamental phenomenon of ESP, and that it occurs when people connect with their future experience of an event. The precognition is due to a transfer of information from the brain in the future to the brain in the present, just as telepathy is due to a transfer between different brains. Taylor rejects the clairvoyance interpretation--direct connection with the event--and suggests that acceptance of this interpretation by a majority of parapsychologists has led to an important misunderstanding about the nature of ESP. To explain the transfer of information through space and time, Taylor applies the special theory of relativity along with David Bohm's interpretation of quantum mechanics. He then examines the memory system in the brain and shows how influences produced on the neuronal networks enable information to be retrieved from the future in precognition, in much the same way as from the past in ordinary memory. He avoids any speculations involving consciousness as the information carrier--such speculations having led to skepticism among scientists in the past. The theory clarifies many misconceptions about extrasensory phenomena. This applies especially to intuition, in which information from the future helps people to make decisions and serves as an important aid to survival. Intuition also accounts for homing instinct in animals, dowsing for minerals, successful use of the I Ching, and the remote viewing techniques used in STAR GATE--the U.S. government's 22-year program in psychic espionage. In view of the controversial nature of ESP, a rigorous multidisciplinary approach is taken. The detailed proposals are supported by a glossary of terms and bibliography including over 470 references. Numerous illustrations and personal anecdotes help to make the book accessible to general readers and scientists alike. Finally, Taylor describes several ways in which readers can experience ESP for themselves--this, he suggests, is the best way for skeptics to become aware of the reality of ESP.

Book excerpt: Television, the movies, and computer games fill the minds of their viewers with a daily staple of fantasy, from tales of UFO landings, haunted houses, and communication with the dead to claims of miraculous cures by gifted healers or breakthrough treatments by means of fringe medicine. The paranormal is so ubiquitous in one form of entertainment or another that many people easily lose sight of the distinction between the real and the imaginary, or they never learn to make the distinction in the first place. In this thorough review of pseudoscience and the paranormal in contemporary life, psychologist Terence Hines teaches readers how to carefully evaluate all such claims in terms of scientific evidence.Hines devotes separate chapters to psychics; life after death; parapsychology; astrology; UFOs; ancient astronauts, cosmic collisions, and the Bermuda Triangle; faith healing; and more. New to this second edition are extended sections on psychoanalysis and pseudopsychologies, especially recovered memory therapy, satanic ritual abuse, facilitated communication, and other questionable psychotherapies. There are also new chapters on alternative medicine, which is now marketed in our drug stores, and on environmental pseudoscience, with special emphasis on the evidence that certain technologies like cell phones or environmental agents like asbestos cause cancer. Finally, Hines discusses the psychological causes for belief in the paranormal despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. This valuable, highly interesting, and completely accessible analysis critiques the whole range of current paranormal claims.

Eugene Sadler-Smith, a leading intuition researcher and educator in business and management, argues that human beings have one brain but two minds – analytical and intuitive. Management has overlooked the importance of intuition, and under-exploited the potential that the intuitive mind has to contribute in areas as diverse as decision making, creativity, team working, entrepreneurship, business ethics and leadership. “The Intuitive Mind is a fascinating and practical book that will maximize your intuition and help you make better decisions today and predictions about tomorrow! Book excerpt: This is the original account of the basic experiments in parapsychology at Duke University, out of which came the phrase, extra-sensory perception that now appears in all dictionaries. We originally published it in association with the Boston Society for Psychic Research, but it has been out of print for some years. The Foreword by William McDougall, author of Introduction to Social Psychology, and the Introduction by Walter Franklin Prince, who was Research Officer for the Boston Society for Psychic Research, as well as all the illustrations, have been retained, but Dr. Rhine has brought the book up-to-date and written a new Introduction especially for this edition. The book remains as Waldemar Kaempffert said originally in the New York Times, "A report that gives an account of the most important study ever made in what is known as telepathy, mindreading, and clairvoyance."

Explicating the content of ESP & Exploring 7 Types of Extrasensory Perception." Extra sensory literally means “outside the senses” — the 5 senses of sight, touch, hearing, smell, and taste. Extrasensory perception (ESP), perception that occurs independently of the known sensory processes. Usually included in this category of phenomena are: 1. Telepathy, or thought transference between persons; 2. Clairvoyance, or supernormal awareness of objects or events not necessarily known to others; and 3. Precognition, or knowledge of the future. 4. Retrocognition is the opposite of precognition. 5. Psychokinesis or Telekinesis. 6. Mediumship ability to communicate with the dead by channeling their spirits. 7. Remote viewing -an anomalous cognition or second sight. Scientific investigation of these and similar phenomena dates from the late 19th century, with most supporting evidence coming from experiments involving card guessing. Subjects attempt to guess correctly the symbols of cards hidden from their view under controlled conditions; a better-than-chance percentage of correct calls on a statistically significant number of trials is considered to be evidence of ESP. Although many scientists continue to doubt the existence of ESP, people who claim this ability are sometimes used by investigative teams searching for missing persons or things. Whatever this extrasensory perception is, it seems to not be bound to limits of time and space. And, it seems to take on several different shapes and forms — from manipulating physical objects, to knowing the thoughts of others, to seeing into the future. Thus, an attempt has been made in this Booklet to explicate the contents of ESP along with each of these 7 different types of ESP for the enthusiastic Medicos. …Dr. H. K. Saboowala.
