This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On top of a decade of exacerbated disaster loss, exceptional global heat, retreating ice and rising sea levels, humanity and our food security face a range of new and unprecedented hazards, such as megafires, extreme weather events, desert locust swarms of magnitudes previously unseen, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Agriculture underpins the livelihoods of over 2.5 billion people – most of them in low-income developing countries – and remains a key driver of development. At no other point in history has agriculture been faced with such an array of familiar and unfamiliar risks, interacting in a hyperconnected world and a precipitously changing landscape. And agriculture continues to absorb a disproportionate share of the damage and loss wrought by disasters. Their growing frequency and intensity, along with the systemic nature of risk, are upending people’s lives, devastating livelihoods, and jeopardizing our entire food system. This report makes a powerful case for investing in resilience and disaster risk reduction – especially data gathering and analysis for evidence informed action – to ensure agriculture’s crucial role in achieving the future we want.
Book Synopsis State of Food and Agriculture by : Food and Agriculture Organization
Download or read book State of Food and Agriculture written by Food and Agriculture Organization and published by Food & Agriculture Organization. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unless action is taken now to make agriculture more sustainable, productive and resilient, climate change impacts will seriously compromise food production in countries and regions that are already highly food-insecure. The Paris Agreement, adopted in December 2015, represents a new beginning in the global effort to stabilize the climate before it is too late. It recognizes the importance of food security in the international response to climate change, as reflected by many countries prominent focus on the agriculture sector in their planned contributions to adaptation and mitigation. To help put those plans into action, this report identifies strategies, financing opportunities, and data and information needs. It also describes transformative policies and institutions that can overcome barriers to implementation. The State of Food and Agriculture is produced annually. Each edition contains an overview of the current global agricultural situation, as well as more in-depth coverage of a topical theme."
Book Synopsis The California Drought's Effect on Food Security Among Farmworkers by : Lizette Rodriguez
Download or read book The California Drought's Effect on Food Security Among Farmworkers written by Lizette Rodriguez and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2016 marks the fifth year of the California drought. The California drought has brought economic difficulties through various California communities. Specifically, in farm working communities the need for water has shifted crop-plantations, forcing growers to transition into less work-intensive and more profitable crops. These subtle changes have negatively affected the dynamic of farm-work employment. Thus the purpose if this study was to explore the challenges farm-working communities in Fresno county experience due to climatic changes. Specifically, this study will explore any food security changes and coping strategies implemented since the start of the drought. This study recruited participants from the Niños Sanos, Familia Sana study (NSFS, Health Children, Healthy Family) childhood intervention study. The primary occupation of these participants was related to agriculture. Using the US Department of Agriculture 18-item food security assessment tool, 45% of participants in this study reported food insecurity in 2012. In 2015, six focus groups were conducted in three different communities within the study. Participants were recruited by promotoras (local lay workers). Each focus groups lasted one and half hours. The focus groups were recorded and transcribed. Two researchers analyzed the audio recording for common themes. The focus groups, provided community member's perspective on the changes caused by they drought. They perceived the drought to be responsible for an increase in food prices, relocation of families, and changes in employment (fewer hours, less predictable, need to travel further to find work). These changes forced families to strategize economically. The dependency these communities have on climate changes is important to understand to launch effective public health interventions to improve family health and well-being.

Book Synopsis Rainfall Shocks, Markets, and Food Crises by : Jenny C. Aker
Download or read book Rainfall Shocks, Markets, and Food Crises written by Jenny C. Aker and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do markets respond to extreme rainfall in West Africa? This paper examines the effect of weather on grain market performance in Niger, a country increasingly affected by drought and severe food crises over the past two decades. Using a dataset that combines information on rainfall, agricultural production, prices and transaction costs, I exploit rainfall variation to estimate the impact of drought on grain market performance between 1997 and 2006. Time series tests suggest that grain markets in Niger respond to supply shocks and that markets are more integrated during drought years. Exploiting the exogeneity of extreme rainfall in a difference-in-differences framework supports these findings: drought reduces grain price dispersion across markets. This impact is stronger as a higher percentage of markets are affected by drought, as was the case in 2004/2005, the year of a severe food crisis. The results suggest that early warning systems in West Africa should focus on the spatial impact of drought at the sub-regional level, as well as monitor prices in key forecasting markets during the harvest period.

Book Synopsis Building agricultural resilience to natural hazard-induced disasters by : The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development
Download or read book Building agricultural resilience to natural hazard-induced disasters written by The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-06-09 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural hazard induced disasters (NHID), such as floods, droughts, severe storms, and animal pests and diseases have significant, widespread and long lasting impacts on agricultural sectors around the world. With climate change set to amplify many of these impacts, a “business as usual” approach to disaster risk management in agriculture cannot continue if we are to meet the challenges of agricultural productivity and sustainability growth, and sustainable development. Drawing from seven case studies – Chile, Italy, Japan, Namibia, New Zealand, Turkey and the United States – this joint OECD?FAO report argues for a new approach to building resilience to NHID in agriculture. It explores the policy measures, governance arrangements, on?farm strategies and other initiatives that countries are using to increase agricultural resilience to NHID, highlighting emerging good practices. It offers concrete recommendations on what more needs to be done to shift from coping with the impacts of disasters, to an ex ante approach that focuses on preventing and mitigating the impacts of disasters, helping the sector be better prepared to respond to disasters, and to adapt and transform in order to be better positioned for future disasters.

Book Synopsis 2018 Global food policy report: Synopsis by : International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)
Download or read book 2018 Global food policy report: Synopsis written by International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2017 was marked by increasing uncertainty amid mixed signs of progress. The world enjoyed a strong economic recovery, but global hunger increased as conflicts, famine, and refugee crises persisted. With the withdrawal of the United States from major international agreements, Britain's “Brexit,” and rising anti-immigration rhetoric in many countries, the world began to step away from decades of global integration that have yielded unprecedented reductions in poverty and malnutrition. This synopsis of the 2018 Global Food Policy Report reviews the events of 2017, including the impact of rising antiglobalism, and looks at how global integration—through trade, investment, migration, open data, developed country policies, and governance—can be harnessed to benefit our global food system.
