Book Synopsis Rational extended thermodynamics by : Ingo Mueller
Download or read book Rational extended thermodynamics written by Ingo Mueller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ordinary thermodynamics provides reliable results when the thermodynamic fields are smooth, in the sense that there are no steep gradients and no rapid changes. In fluids and gases this is the domain of the equations of Navier-Stokes and Fourier. Extended thermodynamics becomes relevant for rapidly varying and strongly inhomogeneous processes. Thus the propagation of high frequency waves, and the shape of shock waves, and the regression of small-scale fluctuation are governed by extended thermodynamics. The field equations of ordinary thermodynamics are parabolic while extended thermodynamics is governed by hyperbolic systems. The main ingredients of extended thermodynamics are • field equations of balance type, • constitutive quantities depending on the present local state and • entropy as a concave function of the state variables. This set of assumptions leads to first order quasi-linear symmetric hyperbolic systems of field equations; it guarantees the well-posedness of initial value problems and finite speeds of propaga tion. Several tenets of irreversible thermodynamics had to be changed in subtle ways to make extended thermodynamics work. Thus, the entropy is allowed to depend on nonequilibrium vari ables, the entropy flux is a general constitutive quantity, and the equations for stress and heat flux contain inertial terms. New insight is therefore provided into the principle of material frame indifference. With these modifications an elegant formal structure can be set up in which, just as in classical thermostatics, all restrictive conditions--derived from the entropy principle-take the form of integrability conditions.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Chemistry: A Modern Introduction by : Frank Brescia
Download or read book Fundamentals of Chemistry: A Modern Introduction written by Frank Brescia and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Chemistry, Third Edition introduces the reader to the fundamentals of chemistry, including the properties of gases, atomic and molecular weights, and the first and second laws of thermodynamics. Chemical equations and chemical arithmetic are also discussed, along with the structure of atoms, chemical periodicity, types of chemical bonds, and condensed states of matter. This book is comprised of 26 chapters and begins with a historical overview of chemistry and some terms which are part of the language of chemists. Separation and purification are covered in the first chapter, while the following chapters focus on atomic and molecular weights, stoichiometry, the structure of atoms, and types of chemical bonds. The molecular orbital (MO) theory of bonding, galvanic cells, and chemical thermodynamics are considered next. Separate chapters are devoted to MO theory of covalent and metallic bonding; orbital hybridization; intermolecular forces; acids and bases; ionic equilibrium calculations; and polymers and biochemicals. This monograph is intended for chemistry students.
Book Synopsis Ground Freezing by : Hans L. Jessberger
Download or read book Ground Freezing written by Hans L. Jessberger and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in Geotechnical Engineering Volume 26: Ground Freezing presents the proceedings of the First International Symposium on Ground Freezing, held in Bochum, Germany on March 8-10, 1978. It summarizes progress in the application of the ground freezing technique in geotechnical engineering, with a focus on engineering with frozen soils and related frost research problems. It includes papers that discuss phase transformation of water, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, and mathematical models. The laboratory and theoretical studies of thermophysical and mechanical properties are discussed as well. Organized into 43 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the freezing and thawing of soils, earth, and rock, and the engineering applications of the favorable properties of frozen ground. It then discusses the mechanical properties of artificially frozen soil for construction purposes, the principles of mechanical and thermal behavior of frozen soil, and the design and calculation of frozen soil-structures. Furthermore, it explains the calculation and dimensioning of refrigeration plants and monitoring of frost penetration. The methods and instrumentation for determining the locations of boundaries of frozen soils and the factors affecting the formation of soil cryogenic textures upon artificial active and passive soil freezing are described. The book also details the influence of salts in the pore water in freezing soils and explains how clay microstructure affects the amount of unfrozen water. In addition, it presents the physicomechanical and thermomechanical properties of frozen coarse-grained soil with sandy clay aggregate. This book will be a valuable source of information for scientists and engineers.
