Book excerpt: Rev. James Sherman, editor of the 1863 edition, wrote the following: "The following Exposition is the most considerable of Jenkyn's works, and exhibits his piety, diligence and learning. It was delivered at Christ Church, Newgate Street, in the ordinary course of his ministry, and met with great acceptance; two editions having been published during the life of the author, both of which have been carefully collated for the present publication. The editor believes that, from the great pains taken to render the work perfect, few errors have escaped detection. He now commits it to the favor of God, who, judging from the testimonies received from many ministers, has crowned the Exposition previously published with a large share of his blessing."--Publisher.

Book excerpt: "Listen, you're young. We don't send kids to jail. If you had something to do with this, it's better to tell us. Then we can help you. Maybe it was a friend of yours come to take care of things for you. You've got a nasty bruise there, and your neighbors told us that you tend to get a lot of bruises. We take those things into account, you know. We understand about things like that." "You don't understand anything," Jude said. After Jude watches his drug-dealer father get gunned down at the kitchen table, he's taken from their dangerous neighborhood to a comfortable home, an elite private school, and a mother he doesn't remember. Only fifteen, Jude is under suspicion for his father's murder, but to save his own life, he can't tell the police what he knows. To make things worse, Jude's mother is the district attorney. She can protect him from the police -- but when Jude's classmate overdoses on heroin, Jude is implicated, and his mother decides to prosecute. Jude is determined to clear his name, though he doesn't know that mysteries from his past have yet to be revealed -- secrets that will forever alter the course of his life. Jude's gripping story is at once moving and horrifying as it traces a young man's quest for acceptance and his incredible capacity for hope and resilience. Kate Morgenroth, whose adult novels have been called "nearly impossible to put down" by Time Out New York and "compulsively readable" by Entertainment Weekly, here shows more of her considerable talent.

Book excerpt: Jude is the second to last book in scripture (right before Revelation). Unfortunately, it is one of the least taught books in Christendom even though it is quite possibly one of the most important. This short 25 verse book written by the half-brother of Jesus is call to arms for believers to stand up against the false teaching that has invaded the church. This timely book was not just relevant in Jude's day, but was a admonition for the church in the centuries to follow to be on guard for the agents of Satan who desire to taint the word of God. This book is commentary on Jude and will dive deep into some of the ancient Greek, as well as many other supporting biblical texts to reveal the deep truths the Holy Spirit penned through Jude. There will be many examples of apostasy of the past in the early church, and apostasy in the present. And yes, there will be apostates in this book who are named and their heresy will be presented against the fires of scripture. This book is meant to equip the saints to "agonize" (ἐπαγωνίζομαι) for the faith against the false teaching that is so pervasive in our culture and around the world. The title of this book was inspired by Jude's command to "ἐπαγωνίζομαι" (epagonizomai) in verse 3, which means "to contend earnestly" for the faith (in context). The Greek root word is where our English word "agonize" comes from. It is literally a call for believers to oppose those who would revile the word of God. If we do not oppose those who slander Christ our Savior and His word, then error will find its way into the church and taint all of those exposed. This book will show you the schemes and motives of the false teacher as Jude pulls no punches.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition Upon the Epistle of Jude A sanctified person lives a oly life, as in at any time has given the soul victory, and any heads of these uncircumcised; it blesses God, as Paul, I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord, Rom. Vii. 25; going about duty more cheerfully, and yet humbly. A man may read the good news of a victory in a saint's countenance. Does he not say to Christ, when some lust hath been smitten, (as Cushi to David, ) I would that all the enemies of my Lord were as that one young man P Lord, when will there be a perfect riddance of these vermin? Oh how sweet will heaven be, when I shall trample upon every Goliath, and see every Egyptian dead upon the shore! When I shall have ueit er tear in my eye, nor lust in my soul! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jude, The 11:45 Call, is God’s last attempt to give mankind His instruction on how to be delivered from destruction and what to expect if they don’t listen. The Day of Judgment will come (Acts 2:20). Jesus’ disciples asked Him, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age (Matthew 24)?” Jude amplifies the instructions of Jesus to His disciples and instructs us to beware, be ready, walk in faith and truth, lifting high the cross of Christ, and testify to the work God has done in our lives. All around us, people struggle in webs of deception and grope in darkness, waiting for the light. Hope lies but a turn away. Joel and Brenda Blakely, laymen in the church holding Master’s of Education degrees, have taken up the pen after many years of teaching, to call attention to The 11:45 Call. The 11:45 Call issues an urgent, simple, authentic call to fight continuously for the faith—the truth and hope of our salvation—in light of the last days before judgment and the midnight hour. The 11:45 Call will expire at the stroke of midnight; destination is determined by personal choice.

Book excerpt: The Word Biblical Commentary delivers the best in biblical scholarship, from the leading scholars of our day who share a commitment to Scripture as divine revelation. This series emphasizes a thorough analysis of textual, linguistic, structural, and theological evidence. The result is judicious and balanced insight into the meanings of the text in the framework of biblical theology. These widely acclaimed commentaries serve as exceptional resources for the professional theologian and instructor, the seminary or university student, the working minister, and everyone concerned with building theological understanding from a solid base of biblical scholarship. Overview of Commentary Organization Introduction—covers issues pertaining to the whole book, including context, date, authorship, composition, interpretive issues, purpose, and theology. Each section of the commentary includes: Pericope Bibliography—a helpful resource containing the most important works that pertain to each particular pericope. Translation—the author’s own translation of the biblical text, reflecting the end result of exegesis and attending to Hebrew and Greek idiomatic usage of words, phrases, and tenses, yet in reasonably good English. Notes—the author’s notes to the translation that address any textual variants, grammatical forms, syntactical constructions, basic meanings of words, and problems of translation. Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Rhetorical or compositional features important to understanding the passage are also introduced here. Comment—verse-by-verse interpretation of the text and dialogue with other interpreters, engaging with current opinion and scholarly research. Explanation—brings together all the results of the discussion in previous sections to expose the meaning and intention of the text at several levels: (1) within the context of the book itself; (2) its meaning in the OT or NT; (3) its place in the entire canon; (4) theological relevance to broader OT or NT issues. General Bibliography—occurring at the end of each volume, this extensive bibliographycontains all sources used anywhere in the commentary.
