Book excerpt: The nineteenth-century Scottish theologian Edward Irving has been the subject of a remarkable resurgence of interest in recentÊdecades, but many studies focus on specific aspects of his thought. This biographyÊportrays Irving's life and ministry as a whole, drawing on previously unused letters as well as his published writings to offer a readable and well-grounded narrative. Apart from the personal interest of this story, Irving's thought and practice as a preacher and pastoral theologian remains worthy of serious attention.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Revelation: A Series of Expositions These lectures were projected, aud more than half of them delivered to the people it is my happiness to serve in the Gospel, before I had any thought of their seeing the light in their present form. It was only after many entreaties on the part of others, and much hesitation on my own, that I consented to their publication. And this, not because of misgivings as to the soundness of the views advanced, but rather from a deep and unaffected consciousness of my unworthiness to deal adequately with so exalted a theme. Yet even a little help may be welcome to some; and I was anxious that those who had heard these lectures should be able to review, as a whole, that exposition which had, of course, been brought before them in separate parts, and at intervals extending over several months. To choose the Apocalypse as the subject of a series of lectures is in these days rather perilous to a man's reputation for common sense. The book has furnished occasion for the display of so many wild vagaries, that he who again attempts to unfold its meaning lays himself open to the suspicion that he has abandoned wholesome teaching, and in moonings about seals and vials, trumpets and dragons, is wasting time that might be better employed. Book Synopsis A Charismatic Model of the Church by : David Y.T. Lee
Download or read book A Charismatic Model of the Church written by David Y.T. Lee and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Irving (1792-1834) has been known as a controversial pastor-theologian in nineteenth-century Britain, particularly given his belief that Christ took on sinful flesh in His incarnation. This book focuses on Irving’s teaching of the church as the body of Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit and the eschatological community in holiness. It explores Irving’s emphasis upon the exalted humanity of Christ after His resurrection in relation to the church. Such a Christ-centred and Spirit-empowered concept of the church has relevance to the twenty-first century church in China as the Chinese church leaders attempt to reconstruct a contemporary theology of the church.

Download or read book The Revelation to John written by Stephen S. Smalley and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revelation to John by Stephen Smalley is a magisterial interpretation of John's Apocalypse as a grand drama, which can only be properly understood in light of John's Gospel and letters and in the context of the Johannine community. As such, it offers the reader a significantly different approach to this enigmatic text than that offered by most contemporary commentaries. Working directly from the Greek text, Smalley offers a masterful analysis of the critical and literary dimensions of the Apocalypse for students and scholars alike. Contents include an in-depth, critical analysis of the Greek text of Revelation a wealth of scholarly interaction with other commentaries and interpretations of Revelation a canonical assessment of Revelation in light of other Johannine texts a historical understanding of Revelation in the context of the Johannine community an interpretation of Revelation as cosmic drama Here is a fresh contribution to the scholarly study of this captivating but often perplexing book of the Bible. Smalley demonstrates that the Apocalypse speaks directly to any situation in any age and offers a portrait of God's loving justice that is relevant to our own society.
