Yet even the most familiar psalms come home to us with increased freshness and power when, by sympathetic study, we have traveled back to the world in which their writers stood, and learned to look out upon it with their eyes. The short studies in this volume are an attempt to interpret, in this way, a few of the psalms that deal with important aspects of the religious life, and to show their vital bearing upon the life of to-day. In their doubts, struggles, and aspirations, those ancient men are very near us, and they speak to us with an accent that is strangely modern. I have tried to make this plain in the course of the exposition, and to illustrate their kinship with us by quotation from modern writers. The treatment of the psalms here selected is expository. Being didactic or homiletic, I have at the same time sought to make it practically helpful, by gathering up the study of each psalm in a series of personal questions, which are intended both to carry the reader into the heart of the psalm, and also to enable him to search his own inner life. These additions, it is hoped, will be considered as improvements. From the extent to which they have increased the size of this Volume, it has been found necessary to omit the Appendix of Additional Criticisms to which reference is made in some of the footnotes throughout the work. To exhibit the Psalms arranged in the metrical order, was an idea which appears never to have suggested itself to the mind of Calvin. In his time, indeed, and long after it, the peculiar character of Hebrew Poetry was not understood. It was not till a recent period that any steady light was thrown on the laws of its composition. The different character and condition of godly people and wicked people, those that serve God, and those that serve him not, is here plainly stated in a few words; so that every man, if he will be faithful to himself, may here see his own face, and then read his own doom. That division of the children of men into saints and sinners, righteous and unrighteous, the children of God, and the children of the wicked one, as it is ancient, ever since the struggle began between sin and grace, the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent, so it is lasting, and will survive all other divisions and subdivisions of men into high and low, rich and poor, bond and free; for by this men's everlasting state will be determined, and the distinction will last as long as heaven and hell. This psalm shews us, I. The holiness and happiness of a godly man, ver. 1 - 3. II. The sinfulness and misery of a wicked man, ver. 4, 5. III. The ground and reason of both, ver. 6. Whosoever collected the psalms of David, (probably it was Ezra, ) with good reason put this psalm first, as a preface to the rest, because it is absolutely necessary to the acceptance of our devotions that we be righteous before God; for it is only the prayer of the upright that is his delight, and therefore that we be right in our notions of blessedness, and in our choice of the way that leads to it. Those are not fit to put up good prayers that do not walk in good ways.
