Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1970, analyses the factors affecting the export performance of selected firms from particular UK industries in the period 1958-66. The study was designed to test at the level of the firm and industry the hypothesis that, in the short run, variations in exports are a function of the pressure of domestic demand. It also obtained valuable information on the factors affecting the export performance and behaviour of firms.

Book excerpt: Economic development has long been acknowledged for its beneficial effects on human well-being. In the context of economic globalization and vertical specialization, increasing the quality of export products is more critical and necessary to export success and sustainable development. The product's quality is inextricably linked to its manufacture and production, which need various types of energy and raw materials. Meanwhile, the adoption of more environmentally friendly and cleaner energy sources contributes to the achievement of sustainable production. Therefore, product quality may provide a new perspective from which to investigate the systematic relationship between greener and renewable energy sources, sustainable production and environmental regulations, as well as the nature of export competitiveness. Generally, export product quality has referred to the quality of manufactured products within the product lines. Quality refers to the relative price of a country's varieties within their respective product lines. Product sophistication assesses the composition of the aggregate exports. Different varieties of same product as per quality level are being produced by several developing and emerging economies. Within any given product line, quality converges both conditionally and unconditionally to the world's benchmark; increases in institutional quality and human capital are associated with faster quality upgrading. In turn, faster growth in quality is associated with more rapid output growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book advances our knowledge on intangibles and their role in productivity growth, presenting a unique multi-level perspective. It encompasses micro, meso, and macro approaches that build upon firm-, industry-, and country-level data and introduces novel layers of analysis. A variety of empirical instruments are used in the book, such as a large-scale international survey, input-output analysis, register data, etc., thus displaying fresh, comparative evidence for Europe, the USA, China, Korea, and Japan. The book also examines the subject within the global value chain context, which is one of the most relevant phenomena of recent decades, and assesses cross-country trends, drawing on a unique industry-level database of intangible assets, based on production input data from all over the world. The book offers new insights on how to measure intangibles, how they contribute to productivity growth, and how policy can help foster intangibles investments and growth. It will therefore be of great interest to scholars, researchers, and advanced students in the fields of economic growth, innovation, technology, and business management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Fritzsch provides an institutional economic analysis of the Great Recession. The author shows that institutions matter as determinants of crisis resilience - however in a different way than predicted by the prominent theories of Olson (1982) and North, Wallis, Weingast (2009), as the crisis was most severe in developed countries with democratic political institutions, rule of law and restrained regulations. The empirical results support theoretical predictions only within the sub-group of developed countries, where rule of law and restrained regulations show a positive association with crisis resilience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Endowed with abundant energy resources, the Soviet Union is the world's largest oil producer and a major exporter of both oil and gas. Energy exports provide over half of Soviet hard-currency receipts, and subsidized energy sales to Eastern Europe are vital tools of Soviet influence in that region. Despite this enviable position, there have been indications in the past few years that the U.S.S.R. may soon face an energy shortage. In addition to examining the significance of U.S. petroleum equipment and technology for Soviet energy development, this book addresses the following questions: First, what opportunities and problems confront the U.S.S.R. in its five primary energy industries-oil, gas, coal, nuclear, and electric power-and what are plausible prospects for these industries in the present decade? Second, what equipment and technology are most needed by the U.S.S.R. in these areas, how much of each has been or is likely to be purchased from the West, and to what extent is the United States the sole or preferred supplier? Third, and perhaps most critical, how much difference could the West as a whole or the United States alone make to Soviet energy availability by 1990, and what are the implications of either providing or withholding such assistance for both the entire Soviet bloc and for the West?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most pressing problem for most developing countries is how to reverse the adverse trends of the 1980s and create the conditions for sustainable development. The contributors to this volume bring a great variety of experience, background and interest to bear on this issue. Considerable attention is given to the design of appropriate structural adjustment programmes and the role of debt reduction, food aid and the European Community in this context. The need for an adaptive evolutionary approach to problems of development is, perhaps, the central theme to the volume.

Book excerpt: Globalization has provoked passionate debate and street demonstrations reminiscent of May 1968. The central question of Europe and Globalization is 'what did Europe do for globalization in the past, and what is globalization doing for Europe today?' The contributors to the volume assess this complex process, and Europe's role within it. Bringing together a team of leading international scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds, this is a valuable and wide-ranging contribution to the debate.
