Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this work was first published in 1966, there was much interest in various types of commodity agreements and compensatory financing as methods of reducing the effects of export fluctuations on the economies of developing countries. The book concluded that short term fluctuations in export earnings, though perhaps important for some countries, did not appear to be the general problem that had been assumed. If correct, it would suggest that any measures should be carefully designed to fit the situations of countries that were affected and be subjected to cost-benefit analysis. This led to many published and unpublished studies on the issues: some supported, others contradicted the book’s conclusions. The data available now are vastly greater and probably more accurate than pre-1966. However, the work and the issues it raised remain important because most schemes proposed to reduce export instability would be costly and likely to divert resources from uses more obviously aimed at raising economic development in most developing countries.

Book Synopsis International Commodity Policy by : Roland Herrmann
Download or read book International Commodity Policy written by Roland Herrmann and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-01 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993, this book provides an excellent analysis of commodity policies internationally during the late 20th Century. It discusses 2 major methods of market regulation: price stabilization – based on buffer stocks or export quotas – and compensatory finance. The authors analyse whether major commodity policies have reached their primary objectives and to what extent they have had economic side effects. Discussion of more general policy issues centres around three international commodity agreements for coffee, rubber and cocoa. The authors also look at the policies adopted by individual nations to regulate commodity trading and assess to what extent they have reached their objectives. A discussion of the intervention of the International Monetary Fund and STABEX assesses the degree of stability they can provide in a highly volatile and variable environment. Nearly 30 years later, volatile world commodity markets are still a major issue in the policy dialogue. Although topics, policy instruments and concepts have changed, this book remains a fundamental contribution to the study of international commodity policy. It will be of great interest to students of commodity policy and economic development and economists in national and international organizations dealing with market stabilization.

Book Synopsis Finance, Development, and the IMF by : James M. Boughton
Download or read book Finance, Development, and the IMF written by James M. Boughton and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-06-25 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an assessment of the role of the International Monetary Fund in poor countries. In recent years, a large portion of the work of the IMF has focused on the economies of low-income countries by aiming to create conditions conducive to poverty reduction and stable economic growth. More than two fifths of the IMF's 185 members are low-income countries and many others have substantial pockets of poverty in their populations. Since economic development and the reduction of poverty are the most important economic challenges that these countries face, how can the IMF best help them? How can the imperative of macroeconomic and financial stability be reconciled with the requirements for sustained economic growth? This volume brings together the research of leading economists, political scientists, and historians to suggest ways for the IMF to address these issues effectively
Book Synopsis Trade Policy and Economic Welfare by : W. Max. Corden
Download or read book Trade Policy and Economic Welfare written by W. Max. Corden and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-02-20 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this classic text on international economics includes three completely new chapters on the environment and trade policy, strategic trade policy, and the relationship between trade policy and the exchange rate. The first edition introduced a number of ideas into policy circles; the new edition has been shortened and substantially revised to point up the themes that have subsequently become prominent in discussions of free trade and protection. Trade Policy and Economic Welfare expounds the normative theory of trade policy. It includes discussion of static and dynamic arguments for protection; effects of trade policy on income distribution, monopoly, X-efficieny, foreign investment and capital accumulation; protection of advanced-technology industries; the choice between tariffs and subsidies as methods of protection. The chapters are self-contained to allow flexible use of the book in teaching undergraduate courses on international trade and the economics of developing countries.
Book Synopsis Commodity Policies by : Alasdair I. MacBean
Download or read book Commodity Policies written by Alasdair I. MacBean and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, this book discusses the key issues concerned with primary commodity trade worldwide. Primary commodities are crucially important for many developing countries because very often exports in just one or two primary commodities form the sole source of income for a developing country. Developing countries need above all stability in primary commodities trade to guarantee their future development. This book examines patterns of trade, changing demand and the effects of fluctuations in spot and futures markets. It analyses theories put forward to explain the problems and it reviews the research of the many international organisations which are concerned with the problems. It examines the international agreements and bodies which have been set up to stabilise trade and assesses the performance of these agreements and organisations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commodity markets are of considerable interest and importance to economists, econometricians and dealers. This book reports the proceedings of an international conference on 'Primary Commodity Prices: Economic Models and Policy', held in London under the auspices of the Centre for Economic Policy Research in March 1989. A range of papers by leading international authorities covers topics such as expectations formation in econometric commodity market models; price determination in the market for aluminium; the estimation of dynamic disequilibrium models with rational expectations; and a comparison of forward markets and buffer stocks as commodity earnings stabilizers. A key feature of this stock is its development of the policy implications of theoretical and empirical work in the field of commodity economics. Most papers are accompanied by discussant's comments to draw out their technical and policy implications. The book's readership will include commodity economists, commodity market practitioners and policy analysis, as well as professionals and advanced students interested in the fields of applied econometrics, economic development and international trade.
