Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on explosion-generated water waves. It presents the theoretical foundations and experimental results of the generation and propagation of impulsively generated waves resulting from underwater explosions. Many of the theories and concepts presented herein are applicable to other types of water waves, in particular, tsunamis and waves generated by the fall of a meteorite. Linear and nonlinear theories, as well as experimental calibrations, are presented for cases of deep and shallow water explosions. Propagation of transient waves on dissipative, nonuniform bathymetries together with laboratory simulations are analyzed and discussed.

Book excerpt: In the course of developing the capability of predicting the characteristics of water waves generated by explosions detonated in shallow water beneath the ocean floor, the pertinent data from past experiments were analysed using dimensional analysis as a framework. Data were examined from one series of high explosive cratering experiments detonated beneath the floor in shallow water, and from two series of high explosive experiments and one nuclear explosive experiment detonated above the floor in shallow water. The data indicate that the maximum radius of the water column produced by the explosion is proportional to the cube root of the ratio of explosive yield to ambient pressure at the point of detonation. Further, the data show that the maximum radius of the column of water is proportional to the square root of the product of wave height and distance from the source. The conclusions of this scheme of analysis are being tested with hydrodynamic computer code calculations.

Book excerpt: The present treatise assembles the theoretical foundations and experimental results on the generation and propagation of water waves generated by underwater explosions. After a brief overview of the physical processes and a presentation of order of magnitude of explosion generated water waves (EGWW) as function of explosion parameters, linear theories and experimental calibration are presented. Nonlinear wave theories and their calibration are necessary in shallow water when the water crater caused by the explosion is not small compared to water depth. The importance of dissipation processes due to wave-sea floor interactions is emphasized, particularly when an EGWW travels on long continental shelf. Methodologies for the propagation of transient waves over 3D bathymetries are developed. The simulation of EGWW in the laboratory is reviewed. Finally, a numerical method based on Boundary Integral Method is applied to investigate the dynamic of bubble formation and wave generation near the explosion. (MM).

Through careful experimentation and data analysis, they develop a comprehensive understanding of the physics at play in this fascinating area of study. Their work provides valuable insight for scientists and engineers interested in understanding the behavior of fluids under extreme conditions. Book excerpt: The objectives of the study are: to develop a mathematical model appropriate for analysis of the behavior of surface effect vehicles (SEV) in unusually large waves; and subsequently to apply this model to investigate the vulnerability of these vehicles to explosion generated waves. The generation of surface waves due to an explosion is modeled mathematically as a function of the explosive yield, detonation depth and water depth. Further, the dynamic property of the propagated waves is treated to vary with the local water depth. The SEV dynamics are modeled mathematically by considering the vehicle as a rigid body having six degrees of freedom in space subject to an appropriate constraint derived from the cushion air dynamics as well as to the environmental excitations due to waves. Non-linear contributions including effects due to large motions, viscous flows, and control logics are considered and vehicle responses are solved numerically through time domain simulations. Analyses have been conducted using this analytical model to examine the potential threat of underwater explosions to a typical 2000-ton class SES, and the operational envelopes for such a vehicle in explosion generated wave environments are developed and discussed.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Waves Produced by Explosions In our analysis we assume that the surface elevation n and the accompanying water motion, are symmetric about an axis through the center of the disturbance. If r denotes distance from this axis and t denotes time then we may write n We also assume that the water is of finite uniform depth, which we denote by h and that the linear theory of surface waves is applicable. Both of these assumptions will be analysed in a later report. In the next two sections we present and discuss the results of our analyses for the cases of initial impulse and initial displacement respectively. Typical graphs of the wave height as a function of r and of t are included. Then in section IV these resulte are applied to the problem of wave production by explosions. The mathematical analysis is contained in an appendix. A list of references to previous work on this subject is appended. Of the previous work the earliest, that of Poisson is the most relevant. However he considers water of infinite depth. Furthermore he obtains detailed results only for paraboloidal and ellipsoidal depressions. Burnside [h] also considers infinite depth, but only twodimensional motion. He obtains a series for the wave motion produced by an initial elevation of very spe01al shape.
