Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Waves Produced by Explosions In our analysis we assume that the surface elevation n and the accompanying water motion, are symmetric about an axis through the center of the disturbance. If r denotes distance from this axis and t denotes time then we may write n We also assume that the water is of finite uniform depth, which we denote by h and that the linear theory of surface waves is applicable. Both of these assumptions will be analysed in a later report. In the next two sections we present and discuss the results of our analyses for the cases of initial impulse and initial displacement respectively. Typical graphs of the wave height as a function of r and of t are included. Then in section IV these resulte are applied to the problem of wave production by explosions. The mathematical analysis is contained in an appendix. A list of references to previous work on this subject is appended. Of the previous work the earliest, that of Poisson is the most relevant. However he considers water of infinite depth. Furthermore he obtains detailed results only for paraboloidal and ellipsoidal depressions. Burnside [h] also considers infinite depth, but only twodimensional motion. He obtains a series for the wave motion produced by an initial elevation of very spe01al shape. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on explosion-generated water waves. It presents the theoretical foundations and experimental results of the generation and propagation of impulsively generated waves resulting from underwater explosions. Many of the theories and concepts presented herein are applicable to other types of water waves, in particular, tsunamis and waves generated by the fall of a meteorite. Linear and nonlinear theories, as well as experimental calibrations, are presented for cases of deep and shallow water explosions. Propagation of transient waves on dissipative, nonuniform bathymetries together with laboratory simulations are analyzed and discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of developing the capability of predicting the characteristics of water waves generated by explosions detonated in shallow water beneath the ocean floor, the pertinent data from past experiments were analysed using dimensional analysis as a framework. Data were examined from one series of high explosive cratering experiments detonated beneath the floor in shallow water, and from two series of high explosive experiments and one nuclear explosive experiment detonated above the floor in shallow water. The data indicate that the maximum radius of the water column produced by the explosion is proportional to the cube root of the ratio of explosive yield to ambient pressure at the point of detonation. Further, the data show that the maximum radius of the column of water is proportional to the square root of the product of wave height and distance from the source. The conclusions of this scheme of analysis are being tested with hydrodynamic computer code calculations.

Major contributions in the fields of measurement, analysis and prediction are discussed. Dynamic loading from conventional high explosives is examined, as well as the effects of liquid propellant, dust, gas, vapour, and fuel/air explosions. Subjects include blast in tunnels, underground and underwater explosions, pressure measurement and blast stimulation. Explosive effects on civil buildings, civil bridges, aircraft and ships are summarized, including the estimation of residual strength. The concluding passages refer to structural safety and reliability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical Remote Sensing is one of the main technologies used in sea surface monitoring. Optical Remote Sensing of Ocean Hydrodynamics investigates and demonstrates capabilities of optical remote sensing technology for enhanced observations and detection of ocean environments. It provides extensive knowledge of physical principles and capabilities of optical observations of the oceans at high spatial resolution, 1-4m, and on the observations of surface wave hydrodynamic processes. It also describes the implementation of spectral-statistical and fusion algorithms for analyses of multispectral optical databases and establishes physics-based criteria for detection of complex wave phenomena and hydrodynamic disturbances including assessment and management of optical databases. This book explains the physical principles of high-resolution optical imagery of the ocean surface, discusses for the first time the capabilities of observing hydrodynamic processes and events, and emphasizes the integration of optical measurements and enhanced data analysis. It also covers both the assessment and the interpretation of dynamic multispectral optical databases and includes applications for advanced studies and nonacoustic detection. This book is an invaluable resource for researches, industry professionals, engineers, and students working on cross-disciplinary problems in ocean hydrodynamics, optical remote sensing of the ocean and sea surface remote sensing. Readers in the fields of geosciences and remote sensing, applied physics, oceanography, satellite observation technology, and optical engineering will learn the theory and practice of optical interactions with the ocean.

Book excerpt: Hydraulic Structure, Equipment and Water Data Acquisition Systems is a component of Encyclopedia of Water Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Hydraulic structures occupied a vital role in the development of civilization from the earliest recorded history up to the present, and undoubtedly will do so in the future. Humanity in ancient times settled mostly near perennial rivers, nomadic people frequented oases and springs, and to augment these natural ephemeral supplies, established societies built primitive dams and dug wells. This 4-volume set contains several chapters, each of size 5000-30000 words, with perspectives, applications and extensive illustrations. It carries state-of-the-art knowledge in the fields of Hydraulic Structure, Equipment and Water Data Acquisition Systems. In these volumes the historical origins, modern developments, and future perspectives in the field of water supply engineering are discussed. Various types of hydraulic structures, their associated equipment, and the various systems for collecting data are described. These four volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers, NGOs and GOs.
