Book excerpt: "This professional inquiry explores the relationships between students’ reading comprehension and their performance on a grade six math word problem test, and it evaluates the readability of the wording for word problem test items. Students’ results on the 2008 Alberta Provincial Achievement Test for Part B, Word Problems, were compared to their reading levels on the Canadian Achievement Test and the Gates MacGinitie Reading Tests, to evaluate the correlation between reading comprehension and word problem performance. The researcher calculated the readability of test questions and invited students to comment on the difficulty of the wording for each question. This investigation revealed a strong positive correlation between the students’ levels of reading comprehension and their scores on the math Provincial Achievement Test Part B. Analysis of scores for individual questions on the math test revealed some surprising anomalies that deserve investigation in a later study. The author shares insights that she will apply to her own teaching to assist students to improve their reading comprehension abilities and their math word problem success. She also provides advice for test construction and recommends further investigation of this research question with a larger sample size."--P. ii.

Word problems have emerged as a prevalent form of knowledge assessment within the mathematics curriculum. This places a significant emphasis on reading in a contextual form, which begs the question- Is math ability influenced by reading comprehension, and what are some underlying factors across reading and math that contribute to math problem-solving? The current thesis explores these themes in two ways- examining problem-solving profiles of students based on reading and arithmetic performance and employing these findings to design and implement an effective intervention for problem-solving in mathematics. The first study examines the hypotheses that fluent readers and strong comprehenders will exhibit better performance on math word problems, irrespective of their arithmetic abilities. Data were collected on standardized reading, math measures, and WASI-II Matrix Reasoning from 72 students across grades four (n = 39; 18 females) and five (n = 35; 17 females). Results identified two components of reading (Fluency, Comprehension) and three components of Math (Numeracy, Spatial Reasoning, Applied Problem Solving) as unique indicators of these domains using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Specifically the study utilizes a single-subject alternating treatments design to compare three different math word problem-solving treatments and their effects on solution accuracy for three third grade students who were exhibiting difficulties in reading and math. The three treatments consisted of a reading fluency and comprehension intervention, a math strategy intervention, and an intervention that integrated both strategies. The current study did not result in conclusive findings regarding the relative effectiveness of the three treatments, but did begin to show some promising trends that suggest the importance of including reading comprehension components to math word-problem lessons and interventions. The current study discusses both the results and limitations of the study, and provides recommendations for further research.

A range of findings have shown how students consistently answer them in ways that fail to take account of the reality of the situations described. This monograph reports on studies carried out to investigate this "suspension of sense-making" in answering word problems. In Part One, a wide range of examples documenting the strength of the phenomenon is reviewed. Initial surprise at the findings was replaced by a conviction that the explanation lies in the culture of the mathematics classroom, specifically the rules implicitly governing the nature and interpretation of the word problem genre. This theoretical shift is reflected in Part Two. A detailed analysis of the way in which word problems are currently taught in typical mathematical classrooms is followed by reviews of design experiments illustrating how, by immersing students in a fundamentally changed learning environment, they can acquire what the authors consider to be more appropriate conceptions about, and strategies for doing, word problems. Book excerpt: This project analyzed whether poor reading comprehension skills will affect the achievement of third grade students in the area of mathematics problem solving. This is a problem facing teachers and administrators because problem solving is a key component of state assessments. Moreover, students in the United States typically score lower in mathematics than language arts on these assessments. An initial awareness of this problem originated in the work setting, and was then carefully scrutinized through an extensive review of the literature. Upon examining the literature, the writer observed that other related factors may be affecting mathematics problem solving. This paper then focused on four main areas: the language and personalization of mathematics word problems, comorbid mathematics and reading learning disorders, working memory and information processing, and metacognition and mathematics problem solving. After careful analysis of these four areas, it was determined by the writer that poor comprehension skills can create mathematics problem solving difficulties for students. A solution was then designed that combined several strategies revealed in the literature. The solution complements the Everyday Mathematics curriculum that is currently implemented in the setting. Specifically, the solution entails the creation of a number story guide, which would incorporate the language of mathematics, the reinforcement of metacognitive skills, and the presentation of math in a real world context.
