Book excerpt: The amount of research on Latina leaders' educational journey and their work with students of color thus far is drastically limited (Castillo et al., 2021). This shortage is also seen in the number of Latina school and district leaders across New York State. In New York State almost 85% of school building leaders were White, while only about 15% were school leaders of color (NYSED, 2019). As the Hispanic population continues to be the fastest growing population in the United States, the disproportion of Latina leaders becomes even more drastic (Manuel Krogstad, 2020). It is imperative for students of color to have leaders in whom they see themselves, yet the gap in Latina leaders and lack of research on their experiences is still evident (Darling-Hammond, 2010). This study aimed to give voice to the counterstories of Latina leaders on their experiences, beliefs, and work with students of color. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to explore the professional experiences of current and former K-12 Latina School and District Leaders and how their experiences have influenced their actions and decision-making in working with students of color in public school districts in New York State. A qualitative design was used to elicit deep responses about the experiences of 17 K-12 Latina school and district leaders and how those experiences have influenced their work with students and families of color. The research study answered three main questions that were based on the Feminist Theory (2019), LatCrit Theory (2001), and Fullan's Leadership Framework (2001). Data were collected through interviews with K-12 Latina school and district leaders. The study generated 17 key findings that addressed the study's three research questions. Some of the key findings in this study were that K-12 Latina school and district leaders were inspired by family members, teachers and/or other influential adults at an early age to become educators and to further their educational journey into leadership. It also revealed that participants who self-identified as a person from Latin origin or descent, Latino/a, expressed they experienced self-perceived ethnicity and gender bias along their educational journey that has impacted their leadership journey and work with students of color. The study also revealed that K-12 Latina leaders also advocated for families and students of color in various ways such as creating academic programs, non-academic opportunities, building relationships, and engaging families. Several conclusions were identified from the findings. Some of these conclusions include: Latina K-12 school and district leaders hold beliefs that their childhood experiences were impactful and influential in their journey to become educators and into leadership; Latina K-12 school and district leaders found that informal mentoring was more impactful and sustainable than formal mentoring in their development as leaders; Latina K-12 school and district leaders believe that their self-perceived ethnicity and/or gender bias experiences along their educational journey have impacted their sense of moral purpose, actions and work with students of color. Based on the findings and conclusions, several recommendations were made for policy, practice, and further study. Some of these recommendations include: Latina leaders should create and/or partner with organizations specifically geared towards the development and empowerment of young Latinas; School districts should be proactive in the recruitment efforts of Latina candidates by partnering with organizations; and Organizations should develop and/or redesign mentorship programs towards the outcome of supporting Latina educational leaders.

Book excerpt: Abstract: As the Latina/o population continues to grow in the United States, Latina/o school leaders continue to be underrepresented in K12 urban schools. A lack of diversity in school administrators is troublesome because an effective leader has the power to build great schools and promote equity (Burstein et al., 2017; Durden, 2008; Khanyi & Naidoo, 2020; Snodgrass Rangel, 2018; Stein, 2016). Given this context, more research is needed that specifically explores how Latina/o school leaders shape Latina/o student outcomes, and equally important, what can be done to grow and support the development of Latina/o leaders. This qualitative interview study used Applied Critical Leadership as a conceptual frame to gain a further understanding of the perceptions of Latina/o School Leaders and their influence on K12 Latina/o students. Applied Critical Leadership (ACL) is grounded in practices that are framed by social justice and educational equity wherein leadership results from both professional practice and leaders’ embodied lived experiences (Santamaría & Santamaría, 2012, p. 5). Findings drawn from interview data indicated that Latina/o administrators demonstrated a commitment to engaging in instructional leadership, striving to improve educational equity, developing meaningful relationships with parents and the community as strategies to improve the educational environments for marginalized students. Recommendations for policy and practice that aimed at improving leadership pathways for aspiring Latina/o school leaders included the following: creating internal school leadership pathways programs, developing mentorship programs with intentional mentor matching, and developing district-level hiring practices for diversity and inclusion. Recommendations for future research included expanding the research for Latina/o school leaders residing outside of Southern California, using quantitative or mixed methods designs, and disaggregating the data.

In the tradition of critical race theory, we are charged with the task of operationalizing theory into practice in the struggle for, and commitment to, social justice. The objective of this edited volume is to draw upon critical race counter-stories and praxis for the purpose of providing leaders in training and practicing K-12 leaders with tangible narratives that demonstrate how racism and its intersectionality with other forms of oppression manifest within K-12 schooling. An additional aim of this book is to provide leaders with a working knowledge of the central tenets of critical race theory and the tools that are required in recognizing how they might be complicit in the reproduction of institutional and systemic racism and other forms of oppression. More precisely, this edited volume intends to draw upon and center the lived experiences and voices of contributors that have experienced racism in K-12 schooling. Through the use of critical race methodology and counter-storytelling (Solórzano & Yosso, 2002), contributors will share and interrogate their experiences while offering current and future educational leaders insight in recognizing how racism functions within institutions and how they can address it. The intended goal of this edited volume is to translate critical race theory into practice while emphasizing the need for educational leaders to develop a critical race praxis and anti-racist approach to leadership.

The purpose of this book is to create a greater collaborative focus on Latino Educational Leadership by inviting scholarly contributions and insights from both established and up-and-coming scholars. Latino Educational Leadership also advocates for the preparation of all leaders as well as the preparation of Latinx educational leaders, to serve Latino communities. Our impetus on Latino Educational Leadership primarily stems from the changing demographics of our country. As of Fall 2017, Latinx student enrollment in K-12 schools reached an all-time high, with Latinxs comprising 26.8% of the nation’s public school enrollment. Postsecondary level Latinx student enrollment has also improved; rising from 25% in 2005 to 37% in 2015. Given this growth, particularly at the K-12 level, there has been an increasing urgency to prepare and support more Latinx educational leaders. Their rich cultural and linguistic connections to communities help them more readily understand and meet the needs of Latino students and families. Aside from enrollment growth, Latinxs have made record strides in postsecondary attainment; between 2003-04 and 2013-14, bachelor's degrees more than doubled from 94,644 to 202,412, master's degrees conferred rose from 29,806 to 55,965, and doctoral degrees rose from 5, 795 to 10,665. Despite such promising gains, concern has not waned over how to best address the challenges this diverse student population continues to face in accessing, persisting, and matriculating across the P-20 Pipeline. There is still work to be done, as only 11% of all bachelor’s degrees, 9% of all master’s degrees, and 7% of all doctoral degrees were awarded to Latinxs in 2013-14. In particular, there is increasing urgency to address how higher education institutions can better prepare, develop, and retain Latinx leaders and scholars, who will serve and meet the needs of Latinx college students to ensure their academic success. Thus, the purpose of this book is to advance the knowledge related to serving Latino communities and preparing Latinx leaders.

Book excerpt: California is home to almost 15 million Latinos, however, according to the 2015 State of Higher Education Report for California, only 12% of the Latino population between the ages of 25 and 64 has a baccalaureate degree or higher, compared with 42% of the White population. Latina students have some of the lowest levels of educational attainment at every point in their K-12 journey and in general, very low occupational attainment. Given these troubling findings, this research sought to understand and tell the stories of Latinas in k-12 leadership positions in Southern California. In this study, Latinas describe how they successfully navigated through and were able to overcome many disparities to become effective educational leaders. The research questions that guided this study were: (a) How do Latina school principals describe their lived experiences as an academically successful Latina student in grades K-12? (b) How do Latina school principals describe their lived experiences during and after college as related to their development as leaders? (c) In what ways does the organizational culture of the K-12 setting influence or is influenced by a Latina leader? Using phenomenological research methods, in depth individual interviews with 10 Latina leaders examined how and in what ways participants prior experiences impact and manifest in their leadership practice. Some literature describe a hybrid space, which is the ethnic and mainstream culture that many Latinas must negotiate. However, results from this study support the addition of a third organizational culture, one that develops as a result of having authority within an educational institution. Thus this study posits that Latina leaders negotiate three cultures while leading: ethnic, mainstream and organizational culture. This research also found that some barriers in the United States that Latinas describe might also positively contribute to their development as leaders. The significance of this study is the possibility that the personal and professional experiences, as told in the stories that Latina educators shared, may enhance our understanding of this at-risk population, aiming to contribute positive counter-stories as exemplars and models for Latina youth living in the U.S.

Nowhere is this 'Latinisation' of America more evident than in schools. The dramatic population growth among Latinos in the United States has not been accompanied by gains in academic achievement. Estimates suggest that approximately half of Latino students fail to complete high school, and few enroll in and complete college. The Latinization of U.S. Schools centres on the voices of Latino youth. It examines how the students themselves make meaning of the policies and practices within schools. The student voices expose an inequitable opportunity structure that results in depressed academic performance for many Latino youth.
