Book excerpt: Foster families face a range of experiences during the fostering process that affect all members of the family both positively and negatively, including the biological children of foster parents. While recent research has begun to focus on support for foster families, most research focuses on training and support for foster parents. Where research does address effects on biological children, there is a gap in the literature concerning long-term supports for these family members. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of the biological children of foster parents while investigating suggestions for school-based supports. Following the phenomenological, qualitative method of research, ten participants ages 10-24, whose families chose to foster one or more children in their homes, were interviewed using a semi-structured interview protocol. Through a thematic analysis, categories and themes emerged, including: positive experiences (new siblings, diverse experiences, helping others, closer relationships with parents and biological siblings, and sharing in a unified family mission) and negative experiences (foster kids' trauma and behavior, ending/temporary nature of placements, older siblings carrying weight for younger siblings, busy schedule, split attention and effect on academics). Three specific recommendations for supports emerged from the data: community, someone to talk to, and validation of experiences. The findings from this study can be used to inform school-based supports for the biological children of foster parents.

This study examined the views and experiences of foster parents who care for children in foster care with behavior problems, explored foster parents' relations with biological parents and child welfare services, and explored foster parents' view of mental health professionals who work with children with behavior problems. Using a qualitative research methodology, the researcher conducted face-to-face interviews with 14 foster parents from one foster family agency in the Los Angeles County. Findings revealed that many times it is difficult for foster parents to know how to care for children with challenging behavior problems. This study also revealed that the majority of foster parents have positive relations with child welfare workers and challenging relationships with children's biological parents. Lastly, this study revealed that foster parents have a difficult time understanding the therapeutic process of mental health professionals who provide services to the children. These results can help social workers and policy makers in providing support and implement better training to foster parents in order to reduce multiple placements of children in foster care.

However, adolescents who have experienced abuse and neglect before they had children have a strong likelihood that their children will become involved with child welfare services due to maltreatment (Putnam-Hornstein, et al 2013 ). This dissertation explores multigenerational involvement in the foster care system, also known as intergenerational removal, in young adult parents’ lives that grew up in foster care. Questionnaires and in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 16 adults over age 18, both male and female, who were in foster care and have biological children were conducted to understand the parenting experiences of former foster youth. I compared and looked for similarities and differences between two groups of former foster care parents: those who have child welfare involvement with their biological children and those who have not. Since qualitative research on multigenerational involvement in foster care is relatively new, I employed a qualitative grounded theory approach in the absence of a hypothesis to develop a theoretical framework for understanding parenting experiences of former foster youth. Former foster care parents credited education and religion as two main influences in their ability to break cycles of abuse. The emergent theory, threshold parenting, supported by themes in the findings create a framework that informs policies and programs aimed at multigenerational involvement prevention in child welfare.

Book excerpt: This qualitative transcendental phenomenology study explored the lived experiences of foster parents who care for traumatized children. Children in the foster care system are often exposed to trauma before and after entering the foster care system. Therefore, the trauma that foster children experience can impact them emotionally, psychologically, and cognitively. Unfortunately, foster parents are often unequipped to deal with these issues when these children enter their homes. The gap this study aimed to address was that foster parents did not have opportunities to share their experiences on what it was like to provide care for traumatized foster children. Husserl’s phenomenology theory guided this exploration and provided an in-depth, comprehensive description of foster parents’ experience in the foster care system. The study’s design and framework were used to address the research question, how does a foster parent describe their experience of providing care for children who have experienced trauma? In the rural region of Atlanta, Georgia, seven foster parents participated in semi-structured face-to-face interviews. The data were analyzed and coded. Four themes emerged: challenges in being a foster parent, the impact of fostering traumatized children, factors contributing to foster parents’ resilience, and recommendations for supporting foster parents. The themes provided insight into what it was like to provide care for foster children in the foster care system and shed light on foster parents’ challenges and needs in caring for traumatized children. The themes revealed that caring for traumatized children can be stressful. The foster parents did not receive sufficient communication about the children’s trauma background or training in managing the children’s trauma. Training and workshops were recommended because the foster parent can experience burnout without developing resiliency and support.
