Nonetheless, counselor education programs have historically provided only minimal attention to preparing doctoral students to actually teach. Furthermore, little of the research in the field of counselor education addresses the way counselor educators are prepared to teach. Using qualitative methods, this author engaged counselor educators identified as excellent teachers in an examination of meaningful experiences that contributed to their development as faculty in counselor education. By exploring experiences that prepared them to teach, excellent teachers provided the next generation of faculty members with rich descriptive strategies for teacher preparation in counselor education. This study applied the term excellent to counselor education faculty who are recipients of the North Central Association for Counselor Education and Supervision's Outstanding Professional Teaching Award or identified by Counselor Education department chairs as excellent teachers. Ten counselor educators, recognized for their excellence in teaching, participated in this study. Data was collected during initial and follow up interviews with participants. Phenomenological methods of data analysis were used to formulate a collective description of meaningful experiences related to the development of excellent teachers in counselor education. Three common themes were identified in this study: Teacher training. The meaningful training experiences that prepared participants to teach. Influential instructors. Previous instructors and the meaningful qualities that made them influential. And personal style as teachers. Meaningful qualities used by participants to describe their personal style as a teacher. The common themes support the existing literature in counselor education on the benefits of real world teaching experiences for doctoral students in counselor education. Findings also support higher education literature on the need for teacher mentors as models of excellent teaching. Implications of the findings for counselor education research and practice are discussed.

Recognized as leaders in the field of counseling, counselor educators exert great influence on students, clients, peers, and society at large. However, it is apparent from the paucity of research on the subject that attention and resources examining the impact leadership has on burnout in counselor educators is lacking. This study examined the relationship between a counselor educator’s experience and competence of leadership and dimensions of burnout. The results from this pilot study indicated no significant correlations between the Principles and Practices of Leadership Excellence Experience subscale and each of the burnout subscales: personal, work-related, and student-related. The study also revealed no significant correlation between the Competence subscale and the student-related burnout subscale, reported by counselor educators. However, significant correlations were found between the Principles and Practices of Leadership Excellence Competence subscale and two of the burnout subscales: personal and work-related. This study also examined the extent to which a counselor educator’s leadership experience and competence, gender, faculty rank, and teaching load predicted burnout. Results from the regression analyses indicated no significant contributions from the predictor variables in relation to each burnout subscale. Implications, limitations, and recommendations for future research are discussed as they relate to current and future counselor educators, higher education administrators, and counselor education preparation programs with the goal of minimizing burnout.

Book excerpt: The purpose of my study was to explore the instructional transitions from in-person to online by counselor education faculty due to COVID-19. Through a transcendental phenomenological approach (Moustakas, 1994), eight counselor educator participants were interviewed via a semi-structured format. All interviews took place online via Zoom, were recorded, transcribed, then analyzed. Transcriptions, after horizonalization, were texturally and structurally described. Those descriptions led to a composite analysis of six themes: (1) communication; (2) technology; (3) COVID-19 as catalyst; (4) dialectic tensions (5) gratitude; and (6) flexibility.Each theme was discussed. Implications, suggestions for further research, and limitations were made. Counseling education has an opportunity to continue decolonizing classrooms, enhancing student and faculty support and learning, and offering more flexibility of classroom technology with enhanced communication.

Book excerpt: This study explored the overall lived experiences of international doctoral candidates in and graduates of counselor education and supervision programs in four regions of the U.S. The study used a phenomenological interpretative approach that focused on exploring the subjective nature of the participants' perspectives in-depth. Seven participants, who were selected from six U.S. counselor education and supervision (CES) programs, participated. The researcher guided this study based on Vygotsky's sociocultural learning theory. The findings indicated that growing as a counselor educator was a journey of empowerment, but at the same time, was a very stressful and challenging process. The findings also identified the participants' specific professional developmental needs and barriers that complicated the participants' professional identity development. Their challenges included, but not limited to, a lack of cultural understanding and a lack of culturally-responsive learning environments. The findings also revealed the participants' contributions to the CES programs, and the roles of their support systems, self-care, and interpersonal interactions to navigate the cultural and educational barriers. The study offers insights into CES programs and to counselor educators to understand the cultural dynamics of international students and to foster culturally-oriented learning environments. The study also provides important implications for validating and integrating international students' lived experiences and diverse cultural backgrounds into CES programs. The study also provides important implications for program curricula including flexibility and multicultural skills training as well as suggestions for future research.

Book excerpt: Graduate students age 40 and older, defined as "nontraditional" for this study, consistently represent approximately 20% of the graduate student population (United States Department of Education National Center for Education Statistics, 2015). Master's degree programs in counseling may attract a higher percentage of these students, as some studies suggest that careers in fields such as counseling are sought out by adults changing careers at midlife and later (Bluestone & Melnik, 2010; Schaefers, 2012). These nontraditional students bring to the classroom their own characteristics of age, life stage, and experience, and they have distinct strengths and challenges that set them apart from traditional students. While a few studies have been conducted that explore the experience of older graduate students, no research has yet investigated faculty perceptions of this group of students and how these perceptions impact faculty teaching practice. In addition, there is a lack of research exploring the experiences of faculty teaching nontraditional students in master's-level counseling programs. How have counselor educators responded to these students in their classrooms? The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe faculty perceptions of and experiences with their nontraditional (age 40 and up) master's-level counseling students, and to explore the ways in which those perceptions and experiences shape faculty teaching practices. This study focused on the faculty members who are teaching in these programs, allowing their perspectives and experiences to emerge through open-ended survey questions. A purposive sample of 52 full-time counselor education faculty was solicited via network sampling. The participants anonymously completed an electronic survey with open-ended questions at a time and location of their convenience. Surveys were analyzed using qualitative content analysis (Schreier, 2012). Major perception-related findings from the study included student characteristics such as (a) respect, (b) experience, (c) enthusiasm, (d) perfectionism, (e) rigidity, (f) greater need for faculty support, and (g) a high number of demands external to the program. The issue of age discrimination also emerged in the survey responses, as several participants reported perceptions of ageist bias, both expressed by nontraditional students toward younger faculty, and expressed by faculty and others toward nontraditional students. Major practice-related findings included (a) providing individual discussion, tutoring, and/or processing when needed, (b) referring to institutional resources such as technology support, and (c) honoring the student's life and work experience. Responses were sorted by participant age, which revealed a clustering of certain perception-related and practice-related response themes by participant age, suggesting age-based differences in both perception and practice. Implications for future research and practice are also discussed in this study.

Nine participants from Ohio counselor education doctoral programs were purposefully sampled and interviewed to ascertain their lived experiences of co-teaching. Data were analyzed using a five-step process and revealed three overall themes: (a) co-teaching experiences are built on relationships, (b) co-teaching experiences have a structure, and (c) co-teaching experiences impact students' development as teachers. Participants' collective co-teaching experiences were mirrored in the identified themes and used as a basis for understanding co-teaching practices within counselor education doctoral programs. The findings of this study revealed the need for a working definition and the intentional implementation of co-teaching practices in counselor education doctoral programs. Additional research extending the study to include a new sample, investigating faculty members' perspectives on co-teaching, the deliberate use of mechanisms for reflective conversations, the use of different methodologies (e.g., ethnography, case study, Q-methodology, etc.), and the distinguishing features of teaching supervision in counselor education is warranted.
