Book Synopsis Into the Deep by : Karsten Schneider
Download or read book Into the Deep written by Karsten Schneider and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How inappropriate it was to name our planet Earth, when quite clearly we should have called it Ocean. 1.36 billion cubic kilometres of water (326 million cubic miles) weighing over a million trillion tons covers more than 70 percent of our planet's surface. Strip Earth of its topography, and an uninterrupted ocean would submerge the planet under 2,500 metres (8,200 feet) of water. Earth's five oceans are one of the wonders of the solar system: they cover the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, our planet's most extensive mountain range; host the Great Barrier Reef - the largest structure built by living organisms; and provide the habitat for Earth's most extreme lifeforms - the denizens of the deep, nightmarish apparitions bristling with fangs and fluorescence. Yet despite its proximity and riches, in many ways we know more about the surface of Mars than we know about the deep ocean. From warm equatorial seas to ice-bound polar oceans, Into the Deep charts our exploration of Earth's final frontier and its inhabitants as it descends from bright coral reefs to the eternal, cold darkness of the abyss. It is a voyage that will astonish the reader - just as the latest deep sea discoveries regularly confound scientists - as they meet the Giant Squid's bigger brother, the Colossal Squid, and encounter the utterly alien environment that surrounds 'black smokers' - hydrothermal rifts in the Earth's crust.
Book Synopsis Deep Play - Exploring the Use of Depth in Psychotherapy with Children by : Dennis McCarthy
Download or read book Deep Play - Exploring the Use of Depth in Psychotherapy with Children written by Dennis McCarthy and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Therapeutic deep play has the capacity for children to express deep emotions, overcome seemingly insurmountable issues and resolve serious problems. Working with children in this profound way, therapists are able to not only eliminate symptoms, but to change the very structure of how children live with themselves, their defense and belief systems. The contributors to this book all work deeply, allowing children to take risks in a safe environment, and become fully absorbed in physical play. Chapters include play with deep sandboxes, clay, water, and various objects, and look at a range of pertinent case studies to demonstrate the therapeutic techniques in practice, alongside the theoretical concepts in which they are grounded. A new theoretical approach is established that takes from psychoanalysis as well as neuroscience and behaviourism, and offers a depth psychology approach in the treatment of children. This will be a valuable resource for anyone working therapeutically with children through play, including play therapists, psychotherapists, psychologists, arts therapists, counsellors, social workers and family therapists.
Download or read book The Deep written by Rivers Solomon and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Octavia E. Butler meets Marvel’s Black Panther in The Deep, a story rich with Afrofuturism, folklore, and the power of memory, inspired by the Hugo Award–nominated song “The Deep” from Daveed Diggs’s rap group Clipping. Yetu holds the memories for her people—water-dwelling descendants of pregnant African slave women thrown overboard by slave owners—who live idyllic lives in the deep. Their past, too traumatic to be remembered regularly is forgotten by everyone, save one—the historian. This demanding role has been bestowed on Yetu. Yetu remembers for everyone, and the memories, painful and wonderful, traumatic and terrible and miraculous, are destroying her. And so, she flees to the surface escaping the memories, the expectations, and the responsibilities—and discovers a world her people left behind long ago. Yetu will learn more than she ever expected about her own past—and about the future of her people. If they are all to survive, they’ll need to reclaim the memories, reclaim their identity—and own who they really are. The Deep is “a tour de force reorientation of the storytelling gaze…a superb, multilayered work,” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) and a vividly original and uniquely affecting story inspired by a song produced by the rap group Clipping.

Book Synopsis The Eternal Darkness by : Robert D. Ballard
Download or read book The Eternal Darkness written by Robert D. Ballard and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until a few decades ago, the ocean depths were almost as mysterious and inaccessible as outer space. Oceans cover two-thirds of the earth's surface with an average depth of more than two miles--yet humans had never ventured more than a few hundred feet below the waves. One of the great scientific and archaeological feats of our time has been finally to cast light on the "eternal darkness" of the deep sea. This is the story of that achievement, told by the man who has done more than any other to make it possible: Robert Ballard. Ballard discovered the wreck of the Titanic. He led the teams that discovered hydrothermal vents and "black smokers"--cracks in the ocean floor where springs of superheated water support some of the strangest life-forms on the planet. He was a diver on the team that explored the mid-Atlantic ridge for the first time, confirming the theory of plate tectonics. Today, using a nuclear submarine from the U.S. Navy, he's exploring the ancient trade routes of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea for the remains of historic vessels and their cargo. In this book, he combines science, history, spectacular illustrations, and first-hand stories from his own expeditions in a uniquely personal account of how twentieth-century explorers have pushed back the frontiers of technology to take us into the midst of a world we could once only guess at. Ballard begins in 1930 with William Beebe and Otis Barton, pioneers of the ocean depths who made the world's first deep-sea dives in a cramped steel sphere. He introduces us to Auguste and Jacques Piccard, whose "Bathyscaph"descended in 1960 to the lowest point on the ocean floor. He reviews the celebrated advances made by Jacques Cousteau. He describes his own major discoveries--from sea-floor spreading to black smokers--as well as his technical breakthroughs, including the development of remote-operated underwater vehicles and the revolutionary search techniques that led to the discovery and exploration of the Titanic, the Nazi battleship Bismarck, ancient trading vessels, and other great ships. Readers will come away with a richer understanding of history, earth science, biology, and marine technology--and a new appreciation for the remarkable men and women who have explored some of the most remote and fascinating places on the planet.
Book Synopsis The Brilliant Abyss by : Helen Scales
Download or read book The Brilliant Abyss written by Helen Scales and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The deep sea is the last, vast wilderness on the planet. For centuries, myth-makers and storytellers have concocted imaginary monsters of the deep, and now scientists are looking there to find bizarre, unknown species, chemicals to make new medicines, and to gain a greater understanding of how this world of ours works. With an average depth of 12,000 feet and chasms that plunge much deeper, it forms a frontier for new discoveries. The Brilliant Abyss tells the story of our relationship with the deep sea how we imagine, explore and exploit it. It captures the golden age of discovery we are currently in and looks back at the history of how we got here, while also looking forward to the unfolding new environmental disasters that are taking place miles beneath the waves, far beyond the public gaze. Throughout history, there have been two distinct groups of deep-sea explorers. Both have sought knowledge but with different and often conflicting ambitions in mind. Some people want to quench their curiosity; many more have been lured by the possibilities of commerce and profit. The tension between these two opposing sides is the theme that runs throughout the book, while readers are taken on a chronological journey through humanity's developing relationship with the deep sea. The Brilliant Abyss ends by looking forwards to humanity's advancing impacts on the deep, including mining and pollution and what we can do about them"--Publisher's description.

Download or read book Deep Work written by Cal Newport and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-05 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AN AMAZON BEST BOOK OF 2O16 PICK IN BUSINESS & LEADERSHIP WALL STREET JOURNAL BUSINESS BESTSELLER A BUSINESS BOOK OF THE WEEK AT 800-CEO-READ Master one of our economy’s most rare skills and achieve groundbreaking results with this “exciting” book (Daniel H. Pink) from an “exceptional” author (New York Times Book Review). Deep work is the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task. It's a skill that allows you to quickly master complicated information and produce better results in less time. Deep Work will make you better at what you do and provide the sense of true fulfillment that comes from craftsmanship. In short, deep work is like a super power in our increasingly competitive twenty-first century economy. And yet, most people have lost the ability to go deep-spending their days instead in a frantic blur of e-mail and social media, not even realizing there's a better way. In Deep Work, author and professor Cal Newport flips the narrative on impact in a connected age. Instead of arguing distraction is bad, he instead celebrates the power of its opposite. Dividing this book into two parts, he first makes the case that in almost any profession, cultivating a deep work ethic will produce massive benefits. He then presents a rigorous training regimen, presented as a series of four "rules," for transforming your mind and habits to support this skill. 1. Work Deeply 2. Embrace Boredom 3. Quit Social Media 4. Drain the Shallows A mix of cultural criticism and actionable advice, Deep Work takes the reader on a journey through memorable stories-from Carl Jung building a stone tower in the woods to focus his mind, to a social media pioneer buying a round-trip business class ticket to Tokyo to write a book free from distraction in the air-and no-nonsense advice, such as the claim that most serious professionals should quit social media and that you should practice being bored. Deep Work is an indispensable guide to anyone seeking focused success in a distracted world.

Book Synopsis Exploring Deep Science in Patanjali Yoga Sutras by : Anil K Rajvanshi
Download or read book Exploring Deep Science in Patanjali Yoga Sutras written by Anil K Rajvanshi and published by Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a booklet on the deep science embedded in Patanjali Yoga Sutras. According to me Patanjali was a true scientist who gave the first knowledge about the control of thought and mind and about universal laws governing time and space. Unfortunately till now none of the commentaries on Yoga Sutras have explored them through the lens of science. I feel this essay will help overcome that lacunae. Sage Patanjali has been my teacher. Whatever little I have written in the last 20 years on spirituality or thought about the interaction of mind-matter and higher things have been inspired by Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and I have always felt that his spirit has guided me in this journey. Yoga sutras is basically a book of life or how to maximize your living potential. It also teaches little bit of Hatha Yoga but the most important lesson it teaches in a scientific manner is how to make the mind (the instrument of comprehension) very powerful so that it can comprehend any secret of the Universe. And then use that powerful mind on different parts of body to get supernatural powers! Patanjali’s writings are like an infinite ocean. The more you read them the deeper is the knowledge. So this small booklet is a work in progress. I have been writing about the science in Yoga sutras for quite some time and have dealt them cursorily in my two books; Nature of Human Thought and Exploring the Mind of God. But this article is an attempt to explore it further and in depth. It is also surprising and fascinating that these sutras were written more than 2000 to 3000 years ago (the exact date is not known) and yet they present such scientifically advanced knowledge. One can only speculate that Sage Patanjali was not of this world but came from an advanced civilization to impart this knowledge. I have alluded to this aspect in this booklet. Exploring Deep Science in Patanjali Yoga Sutras. The booklet has the following sections: Who was Patanjali; About his Sutras or the book; Science of Sutras; Was Patanjali an extraterrestrial being; Patanjali and stars; Major Omissions in Sutras; and the final section is about my teacher Sage Patanjali. This is not a book in the true sense but a small booklet and my desire to publish it is to make it available to a wide audience for discussions and debate. I would therefore greatly appreciate it if the readers can comment on it either in Google book site or can send email to me. Anil K Rajvanshi Phaltan, Maharashtra, India June 2023. [email protected]
