This dissertation used the theory of sense-of-community to explore how universities and colleges can influence student grade point averages and persistence to degree completion. Data were collected with the National Survey of Student Engagement at a Midwestern University. Factor analysis suggested four factors of sense-of-community within the National Survey of Student Engagement: Campus Social Milieu, Divergent Thinking, Institutional Involvement, and Relationship Quality. Results of further analyses indicated that sense-of-community influenced student satisfaction primarily through Relationship Quality and Campus Social Milieu. Sense-of-community also had a slight influence on student success. Campus Social Milieu, Relationship Quality, and Institutional Involvement seemed to affect grade point average; Relationship Quality and Institutional Involvement seemed to affect degree completion. Institutions wishing to assist the increase of academic achievement and graduation rates in addition to students' satisfaction with their experience in college are advised to invest in programs and policies building sense-of-community among their students, faculty, and administrators.

Book excerpt: Purpose: The purpose of the study is to explore the dimensions of quality of higher education (QHE) and its impact on the institutional image (II). Additionally, the study examines the mediating role of student satisfaction between the QHE and institutional image. Design/methodology/approach: A self-administered and structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were collected online and having successive cleaning and removing the missing data, is comprised of 302 valid samples. The structural equation modeling was used to describe the influencing factors on the QHE and mediating variable as well as hypothesis testing. Findings: The findings of the study revealed that the quality of the teacher, research and infrastructural facility, syllabus and course curriculum, and policy and budget are the important dimensions of QHE, and QHE has a significant impact on II. In addition, student satisfaction found to be significant in predicting II, however, this study did not find mediation impact on the relationship between QHE and the II. Practical implication: The main novelty of the findings implies that some undue longings could positively influence student satisfaction which had no effect on QHE and the II. As a result, the practitioners and the academics both would be benefited from the findings of the study especially in the higher education perspective of Bangladesh. Originality/value: Prior scholars have scrutinized the various issues associated with the QHE but there is a scarcity of studies that have been examined the mediating role of student satisfaction between the QHE and the II. Furthermore, no one considered the excessive issues of student satisfaction which have no effects on the QHE and the II.
