The purpose of this research study was to explore the college experience of student veterans and identify ways to help them succeed academically. More specifically, this study sought to identify factors that predict the academic success of veterans in their first year of college. The researcher examined veterans’ experiences in college, inside and outside the classroom, in order to identify which engagement activities, if any, influenced their first-term cumulative GPA. The researcher found the following seven variables to be statistically significant predictors of student veterans’ first-term GPA: (a) race, (b) the number of credit hours taken, (c) talking to faculty members about career aspirations, (d) receiving oral feedback from a faculty member about academic performance, (e) attending events on campus, (f) exercising or participating in physical activities, and (g) time spent commuting to class. Increased veteran enrollment has merited examination of the challenges student veterans have encountered at higher education institutions. This study adds to the limited body of knowledge on this topic and contributes to a future plan for the successful education of veterans who attend college.

This theory holds important implications for universities providing additional support for veteran students with various intersecting identities through expanded services, orientation, academic courses, resources, and structured policies and procedures. Furthermore, this study provides opportunities to expand on existing research related to the three core identities studied, current student-related legislation, as well as student theory development related to sense of belonging, reconceptualized model of multiple dimensions of identity, persistence, and success.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to explore and describe the lived experiences of female student veterans with disabilities entering higher education during reintegration in order to improve programs, services, and support available to female student veterans with disabilities. A screening questionnaire, interviews, a focus group, and journals were used to collect data. Participants consisted of 11 female student veterans with disabilities who were purposively selected using criterion, snowball, and maximum variation sampling. The central research question was: What are the transition experiences of female student veterans with disabilities entering college during reintegration into society? Four sub-questions were also addressed. Data analyses were conducted using Moustakas' (1994) recommendations of a transcendental phenomenological study, and five themes were identified. Textural and structural descriptions were written and integrated into the composite description to reveal the essence of participants' experiences. Findings served to inform post-secondary institutions of the diverse needs of female student veterans with disabilities so they can better serve them, increase student veterans' perseverance and academic success, and provide a smoother reintegration for all student veterans with disabilities.

Book excerpt: The focus of this study was to examine the association of social support and Student Military Veterans (SMV) achieving academic success in higher education. The researcher conducted a systematic review comprised of 12 articles. The selected articles were relevant to emotional support, financial stability, social ties, and social integration as it relates to SMV achieving academic success. The target population for this study consisted of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation New Dawn veterans. In conducting the systematic review and synthesizing the results from each of the 12 articles, the researcher concluded that more research examining the effects of social support and veterans achieving academic success is needed. Every article included in the synthesis falls short of fully examining potential correlation between social support and SMV achieving academic success. However, most articles included in the synthesis explore a single aspect of social support and correlated the effects with academic persistence or academic success.

As a result of the GI Bill in 1956, the U.S. labor market benefited from an additional 450,000 engineers, 238,000 school teachers, 91,000 scientists, 67,000 medical doctors, 22,000 dentists, and more than 1 million other college-trained professionals (Haydock, 1996). However, today too many military veterans from the enlisted ranks fall short of achieving their educational goals. While more veterans enroll in college, fewer veterans are graduating (VA, 2009). In recent years, college campuses across the nation have witnessed major enrollments of returning military veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. However, many veterans suffer from higher rates of unemployment, homelessness, and war-incurred disabilities. There exists little qualitative research that explores the academic and social experiences of Iraq and Afghanistan student veterans, especially factors contributing to their success. The transition from military life to civilian life can be one of the most challenging encounters of any individual. This study investigated the academic and social experiences of student veterans following the transition from military service through enrollment and graduation in California colleges utilizing the GI Bill benefit. Using a semi-structured interview protocol to identify perceptions and explore the experiences and insights of student veterans, the study demonstrated how this demographic was able to achieve academic success despite various barriers, such as the pressure of the first year of college, despair, physical disabilities, injuries, PTSD, perceptions of other students, and interaction with faculty. The study used a qualitative phenomenological design to determine the essence of the experiences of successful and unsuccessful veterans in higher education. This study's primary objective was to inform student affairs administrators, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and other higher education constituent groups about the experiences of student veterans and promising best practices to address the unique needs of this student group. The purpose of this study was to create a base of knowledge concerning the overall academic and social experiences of student veterans who enlisted in the military pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher. Furthermore, this study explored new and existing sources of support for student veterans. Implications were provided through the lenses of transformational leadership, policy, and data-based decision-making practices. The study provides recommendations related to the different transitional phases military service members experience upon completion of their military service.
