Book excerpt: This critical interpretivist case study explored students' experiences of an HIV/AIDS service learning module run in the School of Psychology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The study was originally initiated in response to a request from CHESP to evaluate this module. It has since become an independent study with the purpose of exploring the kind of learning (HIV specific) that students gained from the module. A number of studies have attempted to explore students' experiences of service learning through students' evaluations, or have focused on the effects of the community intervention on the community. These are often of a quantitative nature and do not engage with students' experiences on a deeper level. They also tend to focus on measuring students' knowledge and understandings of HIV/AIDS. The objective of this study was to qualitatively explore whether students had experienced a genuine engagement in the service learning module, focusing on their level of reflection on their identities, their understandings of self and other, and their understandings of their own location within the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Book excerpt: The current research study was a qualitative investigation to explore and describe how students, registered for the Education 364 module, experienced the HIV/AIDS teacher education pilot programme (TEPP), implemented at the University of Pretoria. The availability of in-depth interview transcriptions, as raw data, permitted analysis of existing data from a different perspective. Transcriptions of a focus group interview and two individual interviews with Afrikaans students were purposefully selected and inductively analysed. Two main themes emerged following the thematic analysis of interview transcriptions. Findings indicate that the content of the HIV/AIDS TEPP provided students with a solid HIV/AIDS-related theoretical basis. Findings furthermore suggest that the HIV/AIDS TEPP could be adapted for different levels of knowledge and teaching phases. Appropriate and sufficient resource materials, in accordance with the explicit needs of each teaching phase, could be developed. Practical examples and clear guidelines may be incorporated into HIV/AIDS programmes to equip teachers to deal with difficult situations. In addition, sufficient time allocation to and early implementation of HIV/AIDS programmes seem necessary. The value of a range of teaching and learning methodologies and the role of HIV/AIDS programme presenters were emphasised. Since existing teacher training may not adequately prepare teachers to address HIV/AIDS challenges, the need for continuous development, lifelong learning as well as support for teachers were also highlighted. Finally, findings indicate that engagement in affective and identity-construction domains may reduce HIV/AIDS fatigue and encourage students to take on active roles to address HIV/AIDS-related challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research which this thesis reports and represents sought to explore, 'The experiences of students Living With or Affected by HIV/AIDS in Trinidad and Tobago". The focus is on the perceptions and experiences of thirteen primary and secondary school students. some of whom were in residential care whilst the others lived with relatives. These perceptions and experiences are also considered in the context of the views of care givers and key informants involved in HIVi AIDS education in Trinidad and Tobago. The primary questions the research addressed were: What had happened to the young people up to the time of the research'? What were their stories with relation to the ways in which HIV/AIDS had impacted their lives? How had they experienced schools and schooling as HIV/AIDS affected students? What were their experiences with regard to the health sector? and, What were their hopes and dreams for the future? The research took a qualitative. auto/biographical approach using interviews and participant observation as the key methods of data collection and narrative/storying and grounded theory as the form of representation and analysis. My own voice both as researcher and as an education professional concerned with young people is acknowledged throughout. My aim has been to present lived experiences - to give voice - and to explore how HIV/AIDS impacted on different aspects of the students' lives, on their health, education. human rights, personal social development, family dynamics and support systems. XI This thesis is an attempt to counter the silence which surrounds students living with or affected by HIV:AIDS as it explores what can be learnt from the perspectives of those students and their care-givers about the cultural significance of the disease, its capacity to alter how we know ourselves and what we can do in the midst of epidemic. Topics addressed within the thesis include: HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean generally and in Trinidad and Tobago specifically; the Medical Disease - transmission. treatment, responses, advocacy; Human Rights: the Social Disease; Local responses of Ministries of Education and Health, The Churches and The NACC; Regional responses - C ARICOM, CAREC, PANCAP; and global response through UNESCO's Commonwealth Chair.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Face of AIDS film archive at Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, consists of more than 700 hours of unedited and edited footage, shot over a period of more than thirty years and all over the world by filmmaker and journalist Staffan Hildebrand. The material documents the HIV/AIDS pandemic and includes scenes from conferences and rallies, and interviews with activists, physicians, people with the infection, and researchers. It represents a global historical development from the early years of the AIDS crisis to a situation in which it is possible to live a normal life with the HIV virus. This volume brings together a range of academic perspectives – from media and film studies, medical history, gender studies, history, and cultural studies – to bear on the archive, shedding light on memories, discourses, trauma, and activism. Using a medical humanities framework, the editors explore the influence of historical representations of HIV/AIDS and stigma in a world where antiretroviral treatment has fundamentally altered the conditions under which many people diagnosed with HIV live. Organized into four sections, this book begins by introducing the archive and its role, setting it in a global context. The first part looks at methodological, legal and ethical issues around archiving memories of the present which are then used to construct histories of the past; something that can be particularly controversial when dealing with a socially stigmatized epidemic such as HIV/AIDS. The second section is devoted to analyses of particular films from the archive, looking at the portrayal of people living with HIV/AIDS, the narrative of HIV as a chronic illness and the contemporary context of particular films. The third section looks at how stigma and trauma are negotiated in the material in the Face of AIDS film archive, discussing ideas about suffering and culpability. The final section contributes perspectives on and by the filmmaker as activist and auteur. This interdisciplinary collection is placed at the intersection of medical humanities, sexuality studies and film and media studies, continuing a tradition of studies on the cultural and social understandings of HIV/AIDS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Service Learning (ISL) borrows from the domains of service learning, study abroad, and international education to create a new pedagogy that adds new and unique value from this combination. It is a high-impact pedagogy with the potential to improve students’ academic attainment, contribute to their personal growth, and develop global civic outcomes. The international service experience provides opportunities for additional learning goals, activities, and relationships that are not available in a domestic service learning course or in a traditional study abroad course. The service experience develops reflection while shedding light on and providing an added dimension to the curricular component of the study abroad course. The international education component further broadens students’ perspectives by providing opportunities to compare and contrast North American and international perspectives on course content. This book focuses on conducting research on ISL, which includes developing and evaluating hypotheses about ISL outcomes and measuring its impact on students, faculty, and communities. The book argues that rigorous research is essential to improving the quality of ISL’s implementation and delivery, and providing the evidence that will lead to wider support and adoption by the academy, funders, and partners. It is intended for both practitioners and scholars, providing guidance and commentary on good practice. The volume provides a pioneering analysis of and understanding of why and under what conditions ISL is an effective pedagogy.Individual chapters discuss conceptual frameworks, research design issues, and measurement strategies related to student learning outcomes; the importance of ISL course and program design; the need for faculty development activities to familiarize faculty with the component pedagogical strategies; the need for resources and collaboration across campus units to develop institutional capacity for ISL; and the role that community constituencies should assume as co-creators of the curriculum, co-educators in the delivery of the curriculum, and co-investigators in the evaluation of and study of ISL. The contributors demonstrate sensitivity to ethical implications of ISL, to issues of power and privilege, to the integrity of partnerships, to reflection, reciprocity, and community benefits
