Book Synopsis The Social Life of Emotions by : Larissa Z. Tiedens
Download or read book The Social Life of Emotions written by Larissa Z. Tiedens and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-27 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book showcases new research and theory about the way in which the social environment shapes, and is shaped by, emotion. The book has three sections, each of which addresses a different level of sociality: interpersonal, intragroup, and intergroup. The first section refers to the links between specific individuals, the second to categories that define multiple individuals as an entity, and the final to the boundaries between groups. Emotions are found in each of these levels and the dynamics involved in these types of relationship are part of what it is to experience emotion. The chapters show how all three types of social relationships generate, and are generated by, emotions. In doing so, this book locates emotional experiences in the larger social context.

Download or read book Methods of Exploring Emotions written by Helena Flam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-24 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gathering scholars from different disciplines, this book is the first on how to study emotions using sociological, historical, linguistic, anthropological, psychological, cultural, and mixed approaches. Bringing together the emerging lines of inquiry, it lays foundations for an overdue methodological debate. The volume offers entrancing short essays, richly illustrated with examples and anecdotes, that provide basic knowledge about how to pursue emotions in texts, interviews, observations, spoken language, visuals, historical documents, and surveys. The contributors are respectful of those being researched and are mindful of the effects of their own feelings on the conclusions. The book thus touches upon the ethics of research in vivid first person accounts. Methods are notoriously difficult to teach—this collection fills the gap between dry methods books and students’ need to know more about the actual research practice.

Book Synopsis Exploring the Emotional Life of the Mind by : Daniël Helderman
Download or read book Exploring the Emotional Life of the Mind written by Daniël Helderman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly innovative new book reconsiders the structure of basic emotions, the self and the mind. It clinically covers mental disorders, therapeutic interventions, defense mechanisms, consciousness and personality and results in a comprehensive discussion of human responses to the environmental crisis. For openers, a novel psychodynamic model of happiness, sadness, fear and anger is presented that captures their object relational features. It offers a look through the eyes of these specific emotions and delineates how they influence the interaction with other persons. As regulation of the emotional state is the core task of the self, dysregulation can lead to mental disorders. Clinical cases of post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and depression are discussed, using the model to outline the emotional turbulence underneath. Finally, the elaborated theory is used to analyse personal responses to the environmental crisis and political strategies that capitalise on them. This book will appeal to scholars, psychotherapists and psychiatrists with an interest in emotions and who wish to challenge their own implicit theory of emotion with an explicit new model. It will also be of interest for academic researchers and professionals in fields where emotional processes play a pivotal role.

Download or read book The Emotions written by Rom Harre and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1996-06-27 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `There is much that is fascinating here. Long-established experiments and conclusions are rubbished and reinterpreted, long-established assumptions and beliefs about emotions are soundly trounced, and generally a good going-over is delivered to the whole field... it is such a blockbuster that one can only reel backwards and tell anyone studying the subject that they would be crazy not to get it′ - Self & Society This fascinating book overviews the psychology of the emotions in its broadest sense, tracing historical, social, cultural and biological themes and analyses. The contributors - some of the leading figures in the field - produce a new theoretical synthesis by drawing together these strands. From the standpoint of the function of the emotions in everyday life, the authors focus on: the discursive role played by the emotions in expressing judgements about, attitudes to and contrition for actions done by the self and others, and how certain emotions - such as guilt, shame, embarrassment, chagrin and regret - seem to play a role in social control; the variation and diversity in emotion, which provides scope for exploring how patterns of emotion contrast in different societies, across gender lines, at different historical times, and between children and adults; and the way in which the body is shaped and its functions influenced by culturally maintained patterns of emotion displays.

Book Synopsis Emotions and Social Relations by : Ian Burkitt
Download or read book Emotions and Social Relations written by Ian Burkitt and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A thoughtful, scholarly yet accessible account of emotion that speaks to current debates associated with the 'affective turn' in disciplines including sociology, cultural studies, geography and psychology... invaluable for anyone wanting to understand contemporary engagements with affect, emotion and feeling." - John Cromby, Loughborough University "This is a lucid, engaging, and thoroughly insightful review of current social scientific thinking on emotions in social life by a leading scholar in the field. Burkitt advances a radically relational conceptualisation of emotion - one which has far-reaching implications for current debates surrounding this topic. The book is sure to become essential reading for both students and researchers interested in emotion" - Jason Hughes, University of Leicester "A masterful exposition of the links between emotions and social relations. Ian Burkitt develops a powerful theory of emotions as arising in patterns of relationships. Extending the pragmatist approach of James and Dewey, Burkitt argues convincingly that emotions can be reduced to neither neurophysiological processes nor discursive practices, but are complexes of the physical, social and discursive realms as these are experienced by living human bodies in relationships. Empirically rich and theoretically deep, this is a highly readable book. - Svend Brinkmann, University of Aalborg This book is a compelling and timely addition to the study of emotions, arguing that emotion is a response to the way in which people are embedded in patterns of relationship, both to others and to significant social and political events or situations. Going beyond the traditional discursive understanding of emotions, Burkitt investigates emotions as a complex and dynamic phenomenon that includes the whole self, body and mind, but which always occur in relation to others.

Book Synopsis Exploring Emotions in Turkey-Iran Relations by : Mehmet Akif Kumral
Download or read book Exploring Emotions in Turkey-Iran Relations written by Mehmet Akif Kumral and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores emotional-affective implications of partnership and rivalry in Turkey-Iran relations. The main proposition of this research underlines the theoretical need to reconnect psycho-social conceptualizations of “emotionality,” “affectivity,” “normativity,” and “relationality.” By combining key theoretical findings, the book offers a holistic conceptual framework to better analyze emotional-affective configuration of relational rules and roles in trans-governmental neighborhood interactions. The empirical chapters look at four consecutive periods extending from the end of First World War (November 1918) to the resuscitation of US sanctions against Iran (November 2018). In each episode, global-regional contours and dyadic dynamics of Ankara-Tehran relationship are examined critically. The century-long history of emotional entanglements and affective arrangements exposes complex patterning of “feeling rules.” Two countervailing constellations still reign over relational narratives. While the 1514 Çaldıran war myth reproduces sectarian resentment and confrontational climate, the 1639 Kasr-ı Şirin peace story reconstructs secular sympathy and collaborative atmosphere in Turkish-Iranian affairs.
