Book excerpt: This quantitative study examines faculty attitudes toward technology integration and use of technology in higher education classrooms. The survey itself was divided into four parts. Part One: Demographics; Part Two: Attitude Toward Technology Integration with 12 items; Part Three: Integration of Technology in Teaching and Learning with 13 items; Part Four: Short Answers About Technology Integration with three items. For the survey populations, a score was formulated from the results of each question in section two (attitude toward technology) and from section three (technology integration). The information provided in the three short answers offered additional insight to the participants' scores in the two sections of the survey. Findings indicated there were no significant differences in relationships between faculty and technology integration, and faculty and attitude toward technology integration. - Abstract.

This has been enabled by a better contemporary understanding of teaching and learning. Instructors now present situated projects and practices to their students, not just foundational principles. Lectures and structured practice are now often replaced by engaging and constructivist learning activities that leverage what students know about, think about and care about. Teaching innovation has also been enabled by online learning in the classroom, beyond the classroom and beyond the campus. Learning online is perhaps not the panacea sometimes asserted but it is a disruptively rich and expanding set of tools and techniques that can facilitate engaging and constructivist learning activities. It is becoming the new normal in university teaching and learning. The opportunity and the need for innovation in teaching and learning are together keenest in information technology itself: Computer and Information Science faculty and students are immersed in innovation. The subject matter of these disciplines changes from one year to the next; courses and curricula are in constant flux. And indeed each wave of disciplinary innovation is assimilated into technology tools and infrastructures for teaching new and emerging concepts and techniques. Innovative Practices in Teaching Information Sciences and Technology: Experience Reports and Reflections describes a set of innovative teaching practices from the faculty of Information Sciences and Technology at Pennsylvania State University. Each chapter is a personal essay describing practices, implemented by one or two faculty that challenge assumptions and push beyond standard practice at the individual faculty and classroom level. These are innovations that instructors elsewhere may find directly accessible and adaptable. Taken as a set, this book is a case study of teaching innovation as a part of faculty culture. Innovation is not optional in information technology; it inheres in both the disciplinary subject matter and in teaching. But it is an option for instructors to collectively embrace innovation as a faculty. The chapters in this book taken together, embody this option and provide a partial model to faculties for reflecting on and refining their own collective culture of teaching innovation.

Major Professor: Patricia Murrell, Ed.D.The purpose of this study was to explore how the introduction of instructional technologies has influenced the motivational attitudes of higher education faculty at research-oriented institutions with respect to their teaching responsibilities. This was a qualitative study using case-study methodology and involved multiple (4) purposefully-selected faculty members who were studied at an in-depth level within the teaching context of their institution. Research questions that were addressed included: (1) What are the relative roles of intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors with respect to a faculty member’s investment in new skills related to the application of instructional technologies? (2) In what ways do faculty members approach the introduction of new instructional technologies into their overall set of professional responsibilities (research and publication, service, teaching, etc.)? (3) Do demographic factors (gender, age, etc.) influence faculty investment in the use of new instructional technologies? (4) To what extent do career-stage factors (pre/post tenure, retirement, etc.) influence faculty investment in the use of new instructional technologies? (5) In what ways do campus and departmental cultures influence motivational behavior with respect to the use of instructional technologies by individual faculty? The findings of this study reaffirmed previous studies, but also offer new insights into how faculty members balance the expanded use of increasingly complex instructional technologies within their professional goals and responsibilities. This study can be helpful to higher education leadership in the development of programs and reward structures that enhance the overall teaching and learning focus of faculty members at a time when instructional technologies are becoming more central to the business of higher education both nationally and globally.

Decades of qualitative study indicate that a majority of faculty continue to regard online education as inferior to traditional classroom learning. The growth of online learning has spurred the development of educational technologies and innovative pedagogical approaches to foster immersive online learning experiences. As faculty venture into this new educational paradigm, whether by choice or force, their attitudes about online education are slowly becoming more positive. The purpose of this study was to assess the attitudes of faculty and establish user profiles based on their innovativeness with regard to teaching with technology and online experience. These profiles were framed using Rogers' Diffusion of Innovations theory (2003) using cluster analysis. The results of this study indicate that faculty adoption-diffusion profiles are correlational to their attitudes toward online education. In addition, this study determined that online teaching experience is the strongest predictor of faculty attitudes and adoption-diffusion classifications. The results of this study suggest that institutions would benefit in analyzing their faculty innovation classifications to inform policy, technology purchasing decisions, and development offerings.
