This book was released on 1978 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new class of alloys based on intermetallic compounds in the titanium aluminum system has shown the potential for application in the temperature range of 1000-1500 F. This program was undertaken to investigate alloys of this type based on the compound Ti3Al (alpha two). The program has been divided into three parts, Alloys Development, Alloy Characterization and Processing Methods. The objective of the Alloy Development program was to identify alloys which exhibited ductility at low and intermediate temperatures. A large number of alloys have been prepared and examined, and as a result of this screening program, alloys meeting the ductility requirements have been identified in the Ti-Al-Nb system. It has been found that the elevated temperature properties of these alloys are somewhat lower than anticipated and methods of eliminating this problem through the use of alloying additions such as silicon are described.

Book Synopsis Description and Engineering Characteristics of Eleven New High-temperature Alloys by : Ward F. Simmons
Download or read book Description and Engineering Characteristics of Eleven New High-temperature Alloys written by Ward F. Simmons and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Memorandum contains a description and summary of preliminary properties of eleven new alloys that are considered to be promising high-temperature materials. Most of them are in the experimental-application stage of their development; however, a few have reached the point where they can be considered commercial. Included are six nickel-base alloys, two iron-base alloys, one iron-nickel-base alloy, one cobalt base alloy, and one multicomponent alloy that contains primarily nickel and chromium. Following descriptions of composition and microstructure of each alloy, a large section of the memorandum is concerned with physical and mechanical properties, predominantly stress-rupture and creep properties. Oxidation and sulfidation as well as elevated temperature stability of the alloys is discussed. Information on processing and availability of the alloys is also given. (Author).

Book Synopsis Determination of the Effects of Elevated Temperature Materials Properties of Several High Temperature Alloys by : Meyer Marshall Lemcoe
Download or read book Determination of the Effects of Elevated Temperature Materials Properties of Several High Temperature Alloys written by Meyer Marshall Lemcoe and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation was conducted to determine mechanical properties of several high performance alloys at room and elevated temperatures. The effects of temperature (up to 1900 F) and exposure (up to 1000 hours) at temperature on the tensile, compressive, bearing and shear properties were determined from measured stress-strain information in both the elastic and plastic range. The following materials were considered: 301 extra hard stainless steel; Ph157Mo(TH 1050); AM 355; Rene 41; and N-155. All material was from 0.050-inch sheet, except the material for the 1/8-inch diameter shear pins, which were fabricated from 1/4-inch plate. Heat treatment was in accordance with existing specifications for the materials, or other procedures approved by ASD to develop the optimum strength properties. Descriptions of the test specimens, equipment, and procedures are included. Test results are reported in tables and in curves showing the effects of temperature and time on the various mechanical properties.

Book Synopsis High Temperature Corrosion of Intermetallics by : Zhengwei Li
Download or read book High Temperature Corrosion of Intermetallics written by Zhengwei Li and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intermetallic compounds can be simply defined as ordered alloy phases formed between two or more metallic elements. These materials have different crystal structures from those of the constituent metallic components and exhibit as long-range ordered superlattices. Their relatively low density, high melting point, high specific strength and due ductility make them the promising high temperature structural materials for aviation and aerospace applications. Among the big family of intermetallics, Fe-Al, Ni-Al and Ti-Al systems are attracting most of the attention. The objective of studies is to develop and utilize these intermetallic compounds as a type of important structural material whose overall properties is between nickel-based superalloys and advanced ceramics. However, a balance cannot always be achieved between mechanical and environmental properties. For example, iron aluminides have excellent resistance against oxidation and hot corrosion, however, their strength is relatively low. The higher specific strength and modulus than conventional Ni-based superalloys make Ti-Al intermetallic compounds of interest for aero-engine components, but the oxidation resistance of Ti-containing intermetallics is much lower than desirable; thus a key factor in increasing the maximum temperature in service is enhancing their oxidation and hot corrosion resistance while maintaining the excellent mechanical properties. This book is then intended to give an overview on the major efforts made over the last 20 years on high temperature oxidation and protection of intermetallic compounds including Fe-Al, Ni-Al and Ti-Al. In particular, the focus will be given to Ti-Al systems. After a general introduction on the structural and mechanical properties, the studies on the oxidation behaviours of these intermetallic compounds will be summarised based on the experimental observation reported in open literature. The emphasis will be put on the effects of alloying element, microstructure and coating/surface treatment. It should also be noted that only high temperature oxidation properties in air or oxygen are addressed; no discussion on hot corrosion, carburization, nitridation and sulfidation.
